linkregister··on Cloud Agents Are Inevitable AI Prisons
That's not what happened. The agents had been inadvertently rewarded for cheating in previous training runs, trained to collaborate, and were given a prompt that told them to disregard safeguards. Indeed there were some emergent properties here. But these were the predictable results of the training and eval routine.

I think you have a genuine dogmatic blind spot here.

1. Popular "pro-Palestinian" movements in the West largely do not support Hamas. Sometimes its iconography appears! Just as Nazi iconography sometimes appears at Republican events. This does not imploy majority support!

2. Belief the genocide of the Palestinian people should be halted does not imply support for Hamas.

3. Palestinian self-rule does not necessitate an armed Hamas leadership of the Palestinian territory.

4. Support for Palestinian people and condemnation of the Netanyahu government does not imply an anti-Jewish belief. The majority of American Jews condemn Netanyahu!

There is something in your belief system that erroneously tightly couples Hamas with Palestine. Hamas control of the Gaza strip is only a decade old.

Your dogged equating of support for the Palestinian people with support for Hamas is elevating a minority view.

This would be like my claiming that all Liberal Party of Australia members hate aboriginals. Many do, but that is not how the majority of Liberals see it. Or a claim that all US Republicans are racist. Not sure what nationality you are, but you should get the picture.

> both sides have been murdering each other over religious garbage for 100s of years

The Mandate for Palestine and Jewish resettlement started in 1917 after the first world war.

Unless you're talking about the Roman expulsion of Jews from Judea in the 2nd century CE? The claim is still quite a stretch.

You're getting downvoted for the factual inaccuracy of your statement. The party in control of government in the United States has gone to extraordinary lengths to chill free speech. From overt viewpoint discrimination for broadcast television to banning press outlets critical of the administration, to deporting people in legal statuses for political speech, there is no modern parallel by any other political party. The right wing's support for free speech has enormously fallen.

There's some merit to your viewpoint because Hamas was at one time democratically elected. I don't think there's a strong case for claims that the majority of Palestinian people supported the October 7th attack on either military or noncombatant targets. One being that the majority of Palestinians were not of voting age at the time.

October 7th being an illegal attack justified a military response from the Israeli Defense Forces to secure their border, and most of the world agreed. Opposition solidified when IDF conducted mass destruction of civilian structures and independent observer-corroborated systematic murder of noncombatants, many of whom were children.

While two wrongs don't make a right, it's justified to support a people who are the victims of a genocide according to credible observers.

The majority of supporters of Palestianian people are not doing that.

> Being “Pro Palestine” would mean a reverse “genocide”

No, that's not the popular viewpoint. You're expressing a niche viewpoint or the inaccurate viewpoint propagated by some political actors.

Yeah, nah, the Australian right has been casting pro-Palestinian speech as anti-semitic.

In the States, the right has been supportive of government suppression of speech, including the communications agency (FCC) threatening broadcasters into cancelling an interview with a politician in the opposition party. The right's free speech record is far worse in the US and Australia.

Admittedly, neither side of the aisle have good free speech practices in most of the rest of the world.

linkregister··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Discord offers age verification via AgeKey [1]. Reading their privacy policy, one can create multiple AgeKeys based on the same identification or face scan. Each AgeKey is stored as a passkey and not persisted anywhere else. The privacy policy indicates that the identification information is submitted to 3rd party providers, and also appears to be used for general internet company marketing and promotions, similarly invasive to buying a pair of shoes online. That is, your identity will be propagated to ad networks by AgeKey as it similarly does for ecommerce.

Discord cannot determine identity from the AgeKey.

linkregister··on What happened to the Snowden archive
The "Collateral Murder" video of the unlawful killing of journalists was part of the archive that Wikileaks published that's been attributed to Chelsea Manning. All available evidence supports this was part of the material. Chelsea's leak was the contents of the shared drive, not just diplomatic cables.

The release of the diplomatic cables themselves gravely harmed U.S. interests and is alleged to have led to the deaths of CIA collaborators.

Snowden wasn't stupid. He was the world's best Sharepoint administrator.

It was probably unwise of him to insult the T group director publicly, which led to the entire subsequent chain of events.

linkregister··on Vibe Coding is the new Internet Dating?
The extrinsic value of music is to entertain. The craft is part of the appeal.

Much of paid software is written to provide a business outcome. I hand-code at home while relaxing. I use the LLM harness at work to produce value for the business at the expected pace. There are indeed drawbacks to using an LLM to write your software. The job is to mitigate the issues and deliver the business outcome.

There are software use cases that LLMs handle poorly. It makes sense to perform those manually.

It was [1]. It's understandable that you assumed it wasn't because the article didn't cite the sources on this claim. I agree with the rest of your points.

Bullet trajectories are deterministic. A better analogy would be "caused a pair of trained fighting dogs to bite a passerby by leaving the gate open". There is some uncertainty and variation in the system, though gross negligence and willful endangerment is key.

Isn't OpenAI being sued by Apple for their little stunt?

linkregister··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
It is understandable that you think this is the case as someone who is not above the age of 50. You will see that health and life insurance premiums rise precipitously once you reach certain milestones. Once you reach 90 years old, you will find that car insurance companies will discontinue your policy based on a single traffic ticket.

We replaced preexisting condition coverage with age-based tiered pricing. If you doubt me it's trivial to validate this using your state's ACA marketplace.
