linkmotif··on “No, we’re telling everyone we are using Java”
Yeah I really want to move to a language with pattern matching. Hopefully it will finally land in Java

Groovy, the real JavaScript. I love Spock but never could get into using Groovy for non-test code.

Wash that down with some Hobo Lager
linkmotif··on The most important software dev skills aren’t technical
I'm not sure these aren't "technical" skills. Patience and attention to detail? In my experience that's part of the technical skill of programming.

Is Flynn actually in jail?

Yeah I must have misread “administration.” In that case obviously you’re correct. Still, wow, they got Manafort. That’s not exactly the big time. Just some sheister lobbyist. Something about “working their way through” didn’t quite connect with my perceived reality.

Really? Name a single member of the trump administration who is in jail, muchless senior. Why make stuff up?
linkmotif··on Rackspace announces it has laid off 200 workers
I love thinking about businesses and their costs, but not as the consumer. As the consumer I care only about the price to me. If the business exposes me to their business, I no longer benefit as much from their business. And yes, would rather hear some PR BS, to be honest, than some sob story about how they aren’t good at business (which is all I hear when they start telling me about how this cost went up or that cost went up).
linkmotif··on Rackspace announces it has laid off 200 workers
Thank you
linkmotif··on Rackspace announces it has laid off 200 workers
Still thought it had the association some how.
linkmotif··on Rackspace announces it has laid off 200 workers
Anyone voting this down, ask yourself: why do I, as customer, care about your costs. That’s YOUR business, not mine. You tell me about your costs, my mind turns off and I don’t want to hear anything else you say.
linkmotif··on Rackspace announces it has laid off 200 workers
Does this affect mailgun? Is that a profitable revenue stream for them?
linkmotif··on Rackspace announces it has laid off 200 workers
Whenever a business justifies its pricing by pointing to costs it’s either in deep trouble or run by amateurs. Big red flag IMO.
linkmotif··on Why 80s BASIC still matters
Thanks for this perspective. I guess I’m just one generation late so I never got it. Admittedly most of my BASIC experience was on graphing calculators :)
linkmotif··on Why 80s BASIC still matters
Thanks for the perspective and especially the book link. I looked around at the book. Looks really nice. I couldn’t have afforded this compiler back in the day though :). Incredible all these compilers/interpreters are free now.

Unless you have something to say that contradicts party ideology. Then you might lose your ability to travel.

Would really love to hear people’s perspectives and experiences with this.
linkmotif··on Revolut CFO resigns following money laundering controversy
This is the kind of thing you institute culturally and don’t put into writing explicitly. Weird that he did the latter. Can’t imagine doing that.

Coupling your frontend and backend, with type checking, is incredible! I think the Relay compiler is amazing and I don't know what I'd do without it.

This would be a problem. What Google cross site tracking cookies does GA send back to Google? I didn’t see any in the documentation.
linkmotif··on Why 80s BASIC still matters
BASIC was a huge turn off for me as a kid in the 90s. I hated it. I hated having to deal with the line numbers. I hated everything about it, except that it let you write a program. Whenever I would look at a long BASIC program I would think, “how the hell did anyone write this?” To this day I don’t understand how people liked this language. I guess it’s easier than assembly, which also has line numbers. And I absolutely loved programming and computers. I remember reading a C++ book around 1997 and even though I couldn’t get my hands on a compiler then, it was liberating to just read about.

This book looks amazing.
linkmotif··on A Newly-Generated Create-React-App 2.1.5 App Has 1,568 Dependencies
Yeah I agree except I don’t understand what the point of the tweet was. Whether you have 1000 deps or 10 deps, the problem is about security, not dep count. Who’s going to carefully audit 10 deps when they’re transitive? More than would audit 1000, but not many more. Having few deps does not appear to be the solution to dependency security.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting!

His section about circumventing CSPs was particularly interesting and relevant. CSPs were an impediment to him, and he avoided operating his scam on sites where a CSP was installed.

linkmotif··on An Honest Living
That’s not true and that’s not what he did.

1) you can criticize Israel all day on campus, no one will stop you.

2) you shouldn’t promote mass murder on campus, which is what SS did. Saying the population deserves mass murder because they’re evil is what he did. Fortunately that was deemed beyond the pale.

linkmotif··on A Newly-Generated Create-React-App 2.1.5 App Has 1,568 Dependencies
That is true. Thank you. But is that the totality of the danger, then?
linkmotif··on A Newly-Generated Create-React-App 2.1.5 App Has 1,568 Dependencies
Right but if they can’t phone anywhere when the client executes them, they’re not dangerous to the client. As another commenter points out though, there is the danger of executing on the dev’s computer: I guess that is true.
