linehedonist··on Waymo to expand robotaxi service to Las Vegas, San Diego and Detroit next year
Waymo was doing tests in NYC earlier this fall but it looks like there are legal difficulties to getting actual approval in New York: https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/09/09/waymo-driverless-cars-nyc...

You’re moving the goalposts. How many families have private insurance? Considering both families with and without private insurance, is the median family better off in the US?

linehedonist··on Bob Ross paintings to be auctioned to fund US public broadcasting
We got Ms Rachel from YouTube, who is genuinely fantastic.
linehedonist··on Bob Ross paintings to be auctioned to fund US public broadcasting
That is the CEO of NPR, not PBS.

In that video you link to she’s talking about Wikipedia. I think her generalization is inappropriate, but her central point is a sound one: it’s crucial to Wikipedia’s purpose that Wikipedia does not seek truth directly, but aims to be an accurate summary of the best sources available.

Or maybe those stations will simply close, never to be reopened, which in the grand scheme of things seems like a worse outcome.

Yes I was also unable to play it due to the bad mouse controls.

linehedonist··on Americans increasingly see legal sports betting as a bad thing for society
Yeah I tend to agree with this. People have always bet on sports. Wodehouse wrote a story about bored rich guys in the countryside betting on children’s church games. The real question is, what has changed to allow this betting to occur legally?

How would you define Zionism?

Sell it to who? In the end someone has to eat it.

Netanyahu seems willing to let support for Israel among Democrats and the young go all the way to 0. Seems like a mistake in the long run.
linehedonist··on Company That Bought Publishers Clearing House Won't Pay Past Prize Winners
Relevant: “Federal court filings and interviews suggest the company once shielded prize winners from financial risk by purchasing prepaid annuities through banks or insurance companies. That practice ended sometime after 2003, said Darrell Lester, a retired Publishers Clearing House senior executive and author of a book about the company.”

Agreed, feels like the company should have been and should be now required to purchase an annuity or other similar product that protects the winners.

I wonder what happened in 2003. Probably the company’s fortunes were already faltering.

Amazing. Would be even better if it kept everything in Pacific time. A little confusing to see “3 hours ago” just because I’m on the East Coast.
linehedonist··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
The many Jews and ex-Israelis here in the NYC suburbs seem to find it pretty safe. My neighbor just sold his Tel Aviv condo he's owned for 40 years -- he seems to believe he's never going back.
linehedonist··on UK, Canada and Australia formally recognise Palestinian state
A number of organizations announced during the 2.5 month pause that they had run out of food:

* UNRWA ran out of flour April 24. https://abcnews.go.com/International/malnutrition-gaza-worse...

* World Food Program ran out of all food April 25. https://www.wfp.org/news/wfp-runs-out-food-stocks-gaza-borde...

* World Central Kitchen ran out of all food May 7. https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/world-central-kitc...

These were major food providers in Gaza. If they had run out of food, I can't imagine that "food was handed out continuously." You are welcome to prove me wrong and find a major provider still providing food in ample quantities in early May.

I don't understand your point with the comparison with Germany. What the US did was barbaric and cruel. Maybe what Israel is doing to Gaza is the 8th circle of hell instead of the 9th, but who cares?

> Which months did Gaza not receive any aid?

Zero (0) food entered Gaza from March 2, 2025 to May 19, 2025.

Two and a half months.

Barbaric.

linehedonist··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
I accept that argument. If I were Gazan I’d leave too, if I could.

But Gazans can’t leave (the borders have been closed for years now), while Israelis can emigrate whenever they like. So on an individual basis, every Israeli has made a choice to accept living in the bad neighborhood, whereas the Gazans have no choice but to make the best of the bad situation.

linehedonist··on UK, Canada and Australia formally recognise Palestinian state
Putting aside its accuracy, your 3004 calorie count is for the first half of last year. Famously, of course, the food situation in Gaza is much worse now in 2025 than in 2024, starting with the fact that Israel allowed in zero (0) food for months this year. How does that fact change your opinion?
linehedonist··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
If I lived in a bad neighborhood, I would leave. Why don’t Israelis?

If all Israeli cities are mixed, then what is an Arab municipality? What point exactly are you trying to make?
linehedonist··on Show HN: I'm making an open-source platform for learning Japanese
Every language course I’ve taken has involved has some active production of language. Day 1 of my Japanese class in HS was introducing ourselves to one another. Language exams also require proof of correct and accurate production of language.

Do you have any citations for the idea that it’s better not to practice actually using the language while trying to learn it?

And maybe talk to people in Japanese? And do some writing? Not just passive consumption.
linehedonist··on Israeli military database show only a quarter of Gaza detainees are fighters
Let's say Hamas returned the hostages. What would happen next? What makes that the "winning move?"

My guess is that Netanyahu would say that the war can't end until "all the terrorists are dead" (impossible), and the Palestinians have given up the one bit of leverage that they have.
