liminal··on SpacetimeDB: A new database written in Rust that replaces your server
This is very cool!

- What is SATN for? (Spacetime Algebraic Type Notation JSON format)

- Can DB instances be replicated using the WAL?

The Typescript support is especially interesting to me :)

liminal··on Kafka is dead, long live Kafka
Can this be installed locally and run on Minio?
liminal··on Meta blocking news links in Canada
Hard to decide between being against the Canadian media oligopoly or the big tech social media oligopoly.
liminal··on A case for toe socks
There are comfy clothes for collecting pet hair while at home, and nicer, less comfy clothes that are kept as far away from pet hair as possible for wearing outside the home.
liminal··on Living in Airbnbs full time isn’t easy (2021)
AirBnb kitchens are the worst. The only real benefit to an abnb over a hotel is having a kitchen, but they are mostly useless. I've never been in one with decent knives. Typically they have cheap non-stick pots and pans that are badly scratched leaving you the option of eating PFAS or ordering in. One time I had to run around town looking for a can opener so I could feed a very hungry dog. Other times I've had to open cans with a knife -- which I guess explains why the knives are so bad.

Don't get me started about internet quality (poor to variable at best). Or how difficult it is to find a decent work area (hosts seem to put beds EVERYWHERE. I presume they think that upping the number of people who can sleep there justifies higher rents? A desk and chair would go a long way).

And every review is 5 stars, so completely useless. Unless you have the time to read every word carefully looking for a hint of something not working, there is no working reputation system at all.

Definitely helps to justify the Manhattan rent costs.
liminal··on Daft: A High-Performance Distributed Dataframe Library for Multimodal Data
Please at least reach out to the Polars folks and see what's possible.
liminal··on Daft: A High-Performance Distributed Dataframe Library for Multimodal Data
This looks amazing.

* I started poking around the docs and I'm most excited about a Ray backend runner. I'm hoping this allows more ergonomic distributed data frame computation on an existing Ray cluster.

* Is this based on Apache Arrow? I would assume so, but it's important that it be zero-copy from other tools. Would like to see this mentioned prominently somewhere.

* I really like the Polars expression API. I haven't dug into the docs enough to know how it relates. I do see a reference to pinning the embedded Polars version, so fingers crossed there's compatibility. It would be AMAZING to be able to take Polars code and run it in a distributed cluster with minimal changes. Can anyone chime in?

liminal··on Rolls-Royce tests 'game-changing' greener UltraFan engine
That engine is massive! This will need new air frames to keep those engines from scraping the ground. Seems like it will be a while before this is used commercially.
liminal··on My friends who cheated in interviews are getting promoted (2022)
Honesty matters more than technical merit -- at least when I'm hiring.
liminal··on KeePassXC pull request to add basic support for WebAuthn
I just switched to KeepassXC because KeeWeb is now unmaintained. I really miss the UI simplicity of KeeWeb. Posting this here in case there are any folks reading who are motivated to maintain a Keepass implementation with a far better UX.

liminal··on Angular v16
I guess SolidJS should be very flattered! Signals seem very inspired by it. Overall I'm excited by these changes. Rxjs is great in many ways, but it's always been a bit awkward in Angular (e.g. Components hide that Inputs are Observables, so you can't just pipe between them).
liminal··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
Bizarre to see this YouTube love-fest in the comments. Lately I've been finding their recommendations a disaster of click-bait shorts that seem like a desperate attempt to compete with TikTok. The worst part is that the algorithm is way too sensitive so if you ever accidentally click on something, you're guaranteed to be force-fed a fire hose of that for life (good luck trying to convince the algorithm otherwise).
liminal··on Seagate hit with $300M penalty for selling sanctioned storage to Huawei
If they sold $1.1B in drives, then shouldn't the fine be larger than $1.1B?
liminal··on Everything advertised on social media is overpriced junk
Anecdotally I get great targeted ads on Instagram: beautiful, interesting products that appeal to my needs and sensibilities. Unfortunately they are all very overpriced and I don't trust the vendors, so I won't buy the products.
liminal··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Yup, I skipped the previous gen. My last laptop was the Intel MBP. This one works so much better, so it's a fair trade, but unfortunate to have to trade so much form for function.
liminal··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Very boxy, the lines and curves all just feel "off" somehow. It just lacks elegance. The previous Intel Mac was thinner and just felt more refined. Having a machine that works better is a fair trade, but it's unfortunate to have a negative emotional reaction to seeing/touching it.
liminal··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Work just bought me a new M2 Macbook Pro. It works great, but it's SO UGLY! I was really surprised to have such a negative emotional response to a new Apple product.
liminal··on Introduction to Autoencoders
The author lifted entire sentences without modification from his sources. E.g. "The parameterized distribution in the code of the autoencoder can be randomly sampled to generate discrete values for latent vectors, which can then be forwarded to the decoder, leading to the generation of new data." I thought this seemed unclear given the previous context, so I looked at the source article he linked to [1] and found that exact sentence. This kind of plagiarism is not cool. If you can't explain the concept, don't publish the article.

liminal··on Launch HN: Lume (YC W23) – Generate custom data integrations with AI
Hi, how do you position yourself relative to products like Workato, Tray, AppConnect, etc.?
liminal··on TypeScript 5.0
This is really great. I once spent a little time thinking about how to better represent RDF in Type/Javascript. These approaches seem like a good direction to go in. Would love to see these ideas developed further.
liminal··on Duolingo Max, a learning experience powered by GPT-4
Depending on how much time you're willing to put in, it can help a lot. 15-30 minutes twice a day would be a good start.
liminal··on Do Non-Profits Drive Social Change?
This article discusses American non-profits, which I've found to be a very American solution to a very American problem of eliminating governments' abilities to solve social problems, while concentrating wealth in a small class of private elites. The problems still need to be solved, but now they need to include an appeal to the egos of wealthy donors.
liminal··on The Waluigi Effect

liminal··on I saw RealPage's crappy rent-jacking-up software so you don't have to
I just rented an apartment in a building that uses RealPage. Somehow a 3 bedroom in the building was priced less than a 1 bedroom. When I asked why, the leasing agent said they had no idea and also no control over prices.
liminal··on Replacing Pandas with Polars
I've been centering Arrow in my data workflows, which has led to a system that uses Ray for distributed computation, Polars for single node data frame computation on Arrow data sets, and Ray Data for distributed data frames using Arrow. I love the speed and Polars' expressive API, and I love that I can use any other Arrow tool on the data without any serialization overhead.

That said, using Ray places limits on that, since it can distribute data across machines, breaking the Arrow model of in-memory data sharing between tools. I know that Ray Data is starting to use Polars internally, but I wish I could use the Polars API over distributed Ray Data sets so I could write code once and not worry about whether Ray has split it across machines.
