lightyrs··on FDA to Ban Juul, Flavored E-Cigarettes If Industry Doesn't Change
As a former smoker who was only able to quit using Juul, this is disappointing to me. As a father of a one year old, I understand the reasoning behind this.

I think perhaps the answer is to make the Juul and similar products less appealing to youth. How? Of course this is a complex topic but less flashy hardware and marketing could be a small start.

lightyrs··on Endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure in US: disease burden and cost analysis
Regardless of whether or not one agrees with your position (that our society could benefit from even more X in the water/air/food supply), it would need to be the stated purpose of distributing X in order for it to be acceptable. If the increased distribution of X is simply a side-effect, then it is unacceptable (even if the end result is viewed positively by some).
lightyrs··on Reddit just passed Facebook as #3 most popular website in US
The federation aspect is very interesting to me. Can you describe in more detail?
lightyrs··on The Twitter Rules

lightyrs··on Facebook Is Shutting Down VR Content Division Oculus Story Studio
It’s a VR play. That’s the frothiest space in the Valley right now. Nobody understands it but everyone wants in. Any idiot could walk into a fucking room, utter the letters ‘v’ and ‘r’, and VC’s would hurl bricks of cash at them.

By the time they find out it’s vaporware, it’s too late. I’ve got to get into this.

lightyrs··on Why Go solves so many problems for web developers
This was one of the more accessible Go articles I've found through hn but it would really help me if these types of examples included well-written implementations in other languages and frameworks (including third-party library implementations, if required). Does anyone have a link to an article or tutorial like that?

Thanks.

lightyrs··on A woman who can smell Parkinson's disease
That is a great point. Treatment is often the nail in the coffin; Sepsis, for example.
lightyrs··on Show HN: Free Company Logo API
Great API, thank you!

I made a little hubot script for this: https://www.npmjs.com/package/hubot-logo

Use it like this: hubot logo stripe.com

lightyrs··on On Time-Lapse Rocket Ride to Trade Center’s Top, Glimpse of Doomed Tower
I think this a really cool concept, in general, but the sight of the doomed WTC tower would give me the creeps. All I can think of when I see it in the promo video is 9/11 and the jumpers. Maybe it's my fault for watching too many 9/11 videos but it would definitely affect my psyche en route to the 102nd floor.
lightyrs··on How AeroPress Fans Are Hacking Their Way to a Better Cup of Coffee
I was using the AeroPress Inverted Method for about two years with varying degrees of success, however, I finally soured on the clunkiness, mess-making potential, lack of easy containment/storage, and lack of body to the coffee it produced so I sold out and got a Nespresso VertuoLine. It's such a refreshing experience to just push a button and have espresso (actual espresso) or coffee. The only downside was the lack of bean choice, however, a clever YouTuber put me on to a method of reusing the pods with your own grind. So when I get tired of the Nespresso flavors, I brew my own (although this is pretty rare since the Nespresso varieties are pretty damn rich and tasty).

I still keep the AeroPress around though — who knows why — affectation maybe.

lightyrs··on Why animals eat psychoactive plants
The naturalistic fallacy should not be confused with a fallacious appeal to nature, a mistaken claim that something is good or right because it is natural (or bad or wrong because it is unnatural).

lightyrs··on Magnus Carlsen – “I am chaotic and lazy” (2010)
I enjoyed this quote. Thank you for exposing me to this man.
lightyrs··on At Burning Man, the Tech Elite One-Up One Another
I've only been to Burning Man once but based on my limited experience, you can have whatever experience you're looking to have there. It's different for every attendee. Some go for drugs, some for yoga, some for music, some for the art (which was incredible and completely exceeded my expectations), some for the community, and some for many more varied reasons.

If you want your Burning Man experience free of techies, models, celebs, and billionaires — I assure you it won't be a hard feat to accomplish. There are myriad subcultures within the culture of Burning Man.

lightyrs··on The Curse of Smart People
Cures are often unenjoyable — it doesn't make them less effective. Think of chemotherapy for example.

Hyperbole is what's known as a "rhetorical device" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetorical_device) — a technique that an author or speaker uses to convey to the listener or reader a meaning with the goal of persuading him or her towards considering a topic from a different perspective, using sentences designed to encourage or provoke a rational argument from an emotional display of a given perspective or action.
lightyrs··on Ask HN: Can someone explain the console for me?
I think you'll have more luck if you start researching "Terminal Emulators" instead of the more generic, "consoles".

Your confusions are well-founded. This is a very vast topic.

lightyrs··on Google Search Results: Dictator Not Found
Where did you get the implication that I'm adverse to references to the 1940s? As for who has the right to be forgotten, that's for the EU courts to determine (as far as EU citizens go).
lightyrs··on Google Search Results: Dictator Not Found
Just wait until the first Facebook-generation presidential candidate — the right to be forgotten will be considered a 'human right'.

lightyrs··on Raising a moral child
There's a difference between 'experimenting' and experimenting. The explicit variation is what I'm referring to — and I don't think it's a matter of semantics. It's the intention that I'm taking issue with.
lightyrs··on Raising a moral child
Because a child cannot give consent.
