lightweb··on StackOverflow Man Remakes Net One Answer at a TIme
This is the basic problem with the current path most startups take, and indeed a real problem with business in America today. Venture Capital kills companies. The money changes it all.

This applies to just about any business venture that involves investment by outside parties. There are obviously exceptions but usually when money gets involved, compromises start being made to make more money.

This has disillusioned me for my entire 16yr career... I have never found a company that wasn't internally corrupted by money.

I'm pretty sure this site offers escrow, so nobody is going to lose their bitcoins just like that...
lightweb··on Bitmit - Buy and sell goods with Bitcoin
From Wikipedia: "According to a Newsweek story, all 400,000 printed copies were recalled for 'pulping', except for one, locked away in a vault at News Corp.[6] One copy did show up on eBay on January 15, 2007, with a starting bid of $1500, and sold for over $65,000 fueling speculation about whether News Corp. was able to destroy all printed copies.[citation needed] James Wolcott of Vanity Fair obtained a "pristine hardcover" copy of the book for a review published in January 2007.[7]"

This is quite an interesting auction here, considering the circumstances.

Didn't this guy rip Joe Rogan off awhile back and even had Joe publicly call him out on stage?

Why is this guy still attracting people?

lightweb··on Peak plastic
Convenient how you completely sidestep the issue of endocrine disruption, BPA, massive toxicity in the environment, or how plastics affects the human physiology.

Toxic, oil-based plastics can not go away fast enough. You chemists have been poisoning humanity for far too long and now you seriously want to advocate using them more instead of looking for alternative solutions?

You are a part of the problem.

lightweb··on $150K and up for Software Devs in Austin
And the massive amounts of water pollution from all of the industrial interests that have been around for most of the 20th century.

It's what made Wisconsin great but it's also a horrible legacy to leave the population with.

It sure is beautiful in the spring and summer. Door County is amazing.

lightweb··on $150K and up for Software Devs in Austin
I left Austin and even I know that Texas is in general much friendlier than the big metro areas in California. :-)

I agree, the OP needs to hang out with more Austinites. Unfortunately, the reason I left Austin was precisely because the ratio of "Austinites" to "Transplants" was headed in the wrong direction FAST. I've been gone almost 4 years now and I hear that it's only getting worse.

Austin still has pockets of cool left, but it's nothing like it was in the 80's, 90's and 00's. It's been on the steady decline for decades.

All that said, it's probably a much better choice than most anywhere else in Texas and probably the south/southwest.

Insider info about meetings and dealings with Microsoft, Warren Buffet, Mark Cuban, Todd Wagner, and how the technology now powers more than 150,000,000 devices, yet the company still tanked. Very interesting info that has never been revealed before.

The world could really use an alternative to abusive, monopolistic communication businesses. Something for and by the people. The people need ubiquitous connectivity but under our own control!

lightweb··on PuTTY 0.61 released
My most favorite sysadmin tool on Windows is mRemoteNG (http://www.mremoteng.org/). It integrated Putty for SSH, but also gives you RDP, Citrix, FTP, HTTP, etc, all integrated with tabs and passwords automatically sent for login.

It's the one Windows-only tool that I wish worked cross-platform.

If most of the world would stop watching television, movies, playing video games and listening to copious quantities of audio media, it would be a much happier place here.

Also, read Eckhart Tolle.

lightweb··on Fire near LANL Whole town evacuated
There is a fire very close to Los Alamos National Laboratory. They have begun to evacuate the whole town. Here is some info from someone on the ground: Our main concern is that the Las Conchas fire is about 3 1/2 miles from Area G, the dumpsite that has been in operation since the late 1950s/early 1960s. There are 20,000 to 30,000 55-gallons drums of plutonium contaminated waste (containing solvents, chemicals and toxic materials) sitting in fabric tents above ground. These drums are destined for WIPP. We understand that LANL has been working since late last night to build a fire line in Water Canyon, between the fire and Area G. Over the last 26 hours the fire has grown from 0 acres to about 45,000 acres – about the size of the Cerro Grande fire in 2000.
