light_cone··on Golang: Code of Conduct Updates
Of course, no one has ever felt to be the intolerant one in the story.
light_cone··on Onyx Boox Mira Pro is a 25 inch E INK Monitor
I have an Onyx Boox 2 (e-ink tablet with hdmi input), and tried to code on it. Can't speak about the latency because it's not the same product. But what I realized is: you lose syntax coloring. Try to turn your monitor black and white to test if you find the lack of coloring acceptable.
light_cone··on We can no longer ignore the potential of psychedelic drugs to treat depression
I am not the parent, so I cannot comment on this specific realization.

But if I may, I want to give a point of data of one effect in the actual world beyond the illusion of the drug, which I believe is what you asked:

During an LSD trip one day, I could easily imagine the vision of a third party watching us, the human race, as one would observe ants going on with their lives. This observation would span across all the civilizations though time on earth, like an epic movie/dream if you will.

In this imaginative "history of the human race" playing before me, I could see myself as I was, that is only a faint bleep, that one day was born, and the day after would die.

This made me feel how insignificant we are, and how futile our day-to-day vexations can be.

This is not a new idea, I was aware before the trip that we are not a lot in the grand scheme of things. But feeling it is another thing.

Having at this very moment as little emotional attachment to my own life as anyone would have to Mr Random Smith born in 1865, made me _feel_ how little we all are, and how almost everyone really live in the illusion that their life, their values, is somehow so important and timeless, whereas in reality, it is probably just a result of being born at a time and a place. In short: life is short, and values are very relative.

So I came back from this trip having understood more of the world. Not as if I magically understood the very fabric of reality. Not as if I became a saint, as if every issue in the world has been revealed to me as self-evident. But as if I became a little wiser, by the simple virtue of taking off my ego for a few hours (if not for real, at least in feeling).

This realization, this feeling, I came back with it. I keep it constantly with me, still to this day. It helped me grow as a person. And it really helps me to put my daily vexations into perspective. I am more serene because of that. This, to me, is not an illusion, but an actual helpful epiphany I had.

Could it be a drain pump noise propagating? Does it happens even when you don't send the water in the drain, but in a bucket?
light_cone··on Mark Zuckerberg Is an Arbiter of Truth–Whether He Likes It or Not
Thank you for this clarification.

But if it has not been increasingly subjective, but harder to detect, then what you are implying, if I do not distord your point of view, is that it is okay to be stricter in policing to catch stop these sophisticated bigots.

But, doesn't being more strict mean that you'll also have more false negatives, that is people that always had "heretic" talk from the point of view of general society, without necessarily being a bigot, but are now being identified as such because the criteria are paint with a broader brush?

And then, wouldn't you agree that this is a restriction of free speech, that people on the other side are arguing to be unacceptable?

light_cone··on Mark Zuckerberg Is an Arbiter of Truth–Whether He Likes It or Not
And what does sophistication of means has to do with the subjectivity mentioned?

You accept the validity of arguments based on who the speaker is, I accept them based on the documentation.

You can say he is bitter or a nutcase, it does not make it so.

About the video, so far you are only able to say that laowhy86 is a youtuber, and therefore he wrong.

So far I've said that the documents linked in the video description corroborates the theory, making this theory credible.

How long will you continue to shoot the messengers instead of listening to what is said? Apart saying gratuitously that youtubers cannot possibily be right, you have not addressed the content of the video. I guess when you can't criticize the content, criticize the form, it is easier.

I will stop now, because I believe you are not writing in good faith. If a youtuber's documented demonstration does not deserve anyone's consideration by nature, because he is necessarily wrong, then certainly by your logic, as stranger writing on hacker news, you don't either deserve anyone's consideration, and you are wrong too.

You are saying that both theory have the same credibility. I don't agree, because you can actually go see the sources linked in the video description. So why don't you go see the sources? Is your claim that laowhy86 is divorced, and that his judgement is clouded, substantiated? I didn't think so, so to me it looks like plain old smear.

This lab accident, on the contrary, is NOT unsubstantiated claims, and acting as it is some frivolous theory is unfair at best. I, while perhaps inducing worryingly staggering feelings to you, looked at the sources and concluded that the info was credible. So it has nothing to with the occupation of laowhy86.

You are appealing to the authority of billions poured into NGO, as if corruption never happens, as if money magically makes people competent, as if organizations never suffered from political bloat. As if for example there was no video proof that the WHO was ignoring Taiwan input for policial reasons – a country that has better epidemics statistics than the majority of us–. Are we also all stupid to entertain the idea that, when a WHO leader does not hear the journalist on skype exactly when she asks a question about taiwan, this is just a bad stratagem to elude the question?

Please.

The most credible evidence has been gathered and presented in a youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpQFCcSI0pU . The youtuber was a long time china immigrant before being forced to move abroad.
light_cone··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
Thanks! I did not know squashfs, but yes it seems the same idea...

Thank you for your input, I think it might be of greater value if I could index enough data to provide a FUSE filesystem instead of a simple archive utility. That's a great idea, I'll look into it.

light_cone··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
I am working on a file archive tool, written in go, to add random file access to .tar.gz of arbitrary size while maintaining compatibility as a valid .tar.gz.

The idea is to embed in gzip metadata the tar file index, and compress the gzip using small chunks of 1MB, whose offsets are also indexed in the metadata.

Since the indexes are written in metadata fields, it is invisible for normal linear decompression.
