lifty··on A day at Hetzner Online in the Falkenstein data center
Ups, my bad. Confused the incident, it was Scaleway.
lifty··on A day at Hetzner Online in the Falkenstein data center
This summer their Amsterdam DC went down because of the record breaking temperature in Amsterdam. Wondering if they use the same cooling technique there. They did mention it was because of cooling.
lifty··on Gemini 3
Not my experience. Codex is the top coding model in my experience and has been since it’s out. Makes fewer mistakes and understands better my intentions.
lifty··on The internet is no longer a safe haven
Zero knowledge proof constructs have the potential to solve these kind of privacy/reputation tradeoffs.
lifty··on Lawmakers want to ban VPNs
Too much hassle to fight it. Better scroll a bit more on tiktok

Why don't you work with the Go ecosystem? You don't use K8s, terraform, etc? What ecosystem do you prefer?
lifty··on Steam Machine
They could offer both locked down signed software on top of their hardware and allow for bypass when the user wants to install their own thing. I prefer by default to have locked down signed chain of software bootstrapping but I do want to also have the ability to use my own.
lifty··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
Got it. But you could just use it on your MacBook on those occasions where you want to "talk" to your computer remotely to check on some progress it made on a specific job. My use case would involve switching desktops, activating specific windows, and reading their content and taking some action. But depends more specifically on the MCP that exposes that functionality, and not your app. I was asking because you're probably more familiar on how reliable such an approach might be.
lifty··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
This is super cool. I noticed that you mention that you will add MCP support soon. I was wondering, do you think it would be possible to control MacOS via voice, remotely, through one of the available MCP servers that allow MacOS control. Do you think that would be feasible?
lifty··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
This looks cool. But that means people need to use your own apps right and you will have to provide apps for every niche? This sounds a bit like an ERP system, similar to what https://www.odoo.com does.
lifty··on Ironclad – formally verified, real-time capable, Unix-like OS kernel
https://asterinas.github.io/ (Linux compatible Kernel) and https://redox-os.org/ are two promising ones.
lifty··on JMAP for Calendars, Contacts and Files Now in Stalwart
It’s such a breeze to self-host your own email server using Stalwart. It has been a new era for email self-hosters like myself since these kind of fully integrated email servers like Stalwart appeared. Another good one but not as actively maintained is Maddy.

Why does the optional (supported only in the enterprise version) feature bother you?
lifty··on Production RAG: what I learned from processing 5M+ documents
How do you do that on 5 million documents?
lifty··on Liquibase continues to advertise itself as "open source" despite license switch
Regarding Redis, you mean that AGPL was not a good choice for them?
lifty··on Leaving serverless led to performance improvement and a simplified architecture
Cloud Run is more akin to AWS ECS (on Fargate), which also uses containers.
lifty··on Ask HN: Abandoned/dead projects you think died before their time and why?
Hah. Naive take. I especially love this “Those people need to be pushed out early and often. That's what voting is for. You need a supermajority to force an end to discussion, and a majority to make a decision”. We know what needs to be done, but it’s not being done. There’s no consensus. Consensus take time and effort and has a lot of friction. I am part of a coop and I have seen first hand how this goes. And it’s fine, consensus based systems have other advantages, but they move slower that hierarchies.
lifty··on Ask HN: Abandoned/dead projects you think died before their time and why?
It is a fundamental constraint of consensus based organizations. You need hierarchy to move faster but that has other disadvantages.
lifty··on Self-hosting email like it's 1984
I thought Stalwart’s license, AGPL is foss.
lifty··on Self-hosting email like it's 1984
Not sure why someone would go through the pain of cobbling up a self hosted solution based on Postfix when you have fully integrated solutions like https://stalw.art/, which are a breeze to setup.
lifty··on Cloudflare Introduces NET Dollar stable coin
What is that fundamentally flawed ideology?
lifty··on Cloudflare Introduces NET Dollar stable coin
Nobody is in denial about the politics and game theory of adoption.

It seems you are in denial about the rate of crypto rails adoption. Stable coins seem to be part of the US national strategy for creating some extra demand for US debt so this goes fully against your previous comment. Decentralized debt markets are growing. Wall Street is dipping its toes more and more in tokenization and more and more organizations are interested in that. That list goes on.

It’s frankly tiring to debate this on HN. The fact is, blockchains are just a technology so they are adopted in all sorts of of ways which sometimes align with decentralization ethos and sometimes not. Ethereum and Bitcoin seems to be getting more adoption, as bearer assets that are independent and have a predictable issuance rate, and in a world with so much debt they can only continue to gain more market share.

So I really don’t know where you’re coming from.

Isn’t that better than advertising? Of course, there’s the cognitive burden of micro payments (https://nakamotoinstitute.org/library/the-mental-accounting-...) so not sure it will catch on. But for agents it might.
lifty··on Apple A19 SoC die shot
Thanks for this! This must be the best video on EUV lithography that has ever been made.
lifty··on Why haven't local-first apps become popular?
Off topic, but why would I choose iroh instead of libp2p which seems to have much better language coverage compared to iroh?
lifty··on Anthropic raises $13B Series F
Someone mentioned their projected ARR for 2025 is 9b. Which makes sense intuitively looking at how much I spent with them this year. So the valuation looks a bit more sane with those numbers.
lifty··on Bcachefs Goes to "Externally Maintained"
Thanks for bcachefs and all the hard work you’ve put in it. It’s truly appreciated and hope you can continue to march on and not give up on the in-kernel code, even if it means bowing to Linus.

On a different note, have you heard about prolly trees and structural sharing? It’s a newer data structure that allows for very cheap structural sharing and I was wondering if it would be possible to build an FS on top of it to have a truly distributed fs that can sync across machines.

lifty··on US to put economic data on 9 blockchains
You're missing the point. A database or a normal http API is great if you're accessing the data from outside a blockchain. If you want smart contracts to access the data, it's better if the data is available natively inside the blockchain. You're probably not interested in smart contract, but there are other people that are trying to build smart contracts which use that data. One simple example would be a prediction market.
