libx··on We’re happy with SQLite and not urgently interested in a fancier DBMS (2016)
CSV could be much easier to parse if people use the ASCII codes meant to be used as field and line separators, thus avoiding having problems with commas.

libx··on Ask HN: I have 3 months of free time, what should I do?
Get some adventure in your life!
libx··on How to Fall Asleep in Two Minutes or Less
We and all the matter around us is only energy. Mass is energy in a very low frequency. Practice hypnotism or meditation and you'll change your life for the better.
libx··on Jakarta stock exchange floor collapsed
Yeah, and soon the stock markets will collapse too..
libx··on Kraken down 24 hours on system upgrade
I had an account with them some months ago, but their system is like shit. Completely shit. When I was long, the balance showed the opposite, when the market was against me my position improved and vice-versa. This had all the bad consequences that one can imagine, as I couldn't close some positions because supposedly there were no funds for that, when in fact, there were.

They need a system fix, I really don't trust them.

libx··on [dead]
Don't sell it. Use it to become a billionaire!
libx··on Ask HN: Does anyone use an alternative to a password manager?
There's also keychain https://github.com/levaidaniel/kc Open it with a master password, copy passwords from it or save new entries. You can have the single file database in a shared service like Dropbox and use it from any computer.
libx··on Ask HN: How can anyone afford $42K/year for health insurance?
Buy an insurance in another country. If you have a big health problem (meaning many $$$), go there, make some tourism, get treated, and everything will be cheaper than what you would pay in the US.

Better yet, find the way to not have any disease. Physical diseases are the last consequence of energy imbalances in your being, be them emotional or spiritual.

libx··on Ask HN: I'm a solopreneur and I feel demoralised
Clearly, to me, you need to find the purpose of your life here on Earth. There are people that may help you, although you have to choose carefully. Not psychiatrists or anything like that. Look for indigo people that have a "highway" connection to the Universe, that came to show the way to others. Read and practice about meditation and spirituality.
libx··on Regex was taking 5 days to run. So I built a tool that did it in 15 minutes
It'd be interesting to compare it with red-lang.org Parse DSL.
libx··on Simple Neural Network in 22 lines J lang without library
I compared the time it takes to run both scripts, with 10000000 iteration. 1m32s for the Python version and only 29s for the J's.

If an algorithm is parallelizable, does J use all cores of a CPU?

libx··on Ubuntu 16.04 Partition Scheme on a Single Internal SSD?
For swap, instead of using a partition for it, you can have a file, or several files of swap in your root partition. This way, the swap files will be handled as other file, and TRIM can do its job.
libx··on ZFS Is the Best Filesystem For Now
Can you please elaborate what are the advantages of such configuration?
libx··on Ask HN: How do you backup your linux system?
I use rsnapshot [1] for /home data and afio [2] for other stuff (offline databases, system, photos, ...)

With rsnapshot, I have hourly, daily, weekly and monthly backups that use hard links for the saving disk space. These backup dirs can be mounted read-only.

With afio, files above some defined size are compressed and then added to the archive, so that if some compression goes wrong, only that file may be lost, the archive is not corrupted. Can have incremental backups.

From the afio webpage: Afio makes cpio-format archives. It deals somewhat gracefully with input data corruption, supports multi-volume archives during interactive operation, and can make compressed archives that are much safer than compressed tar or cpio archives. Afio is best used as an `archive engine' in a backup script.

libx··on Chelsea Manning Is Expected to Leave Prison, 28 Years Early
Maybe someone could use the blockchain to issue some kind of ISBN numbers...
libx··on Ask HN: Vim users, what's your favourite colorscheme?
+1 for Gruvbox. The best I know for me.
libx··on Ask HN: Which non-technology book has influenced you the most and why?
Hi LyndsySimon, I read your post in another topic where you said that you were loosing weight by eating a ketonic diet. Got curious, followed your profile and arrived here, just to tell you two things. One that I can see that you're thinking different, and I congratulate you for this, as it's not easy to do so. Second, that regarding religions you can perhaps take a step ahead, too. God is universal. Religions are man made and serve to divide. You may be interested in a six book volume set that really enlightened me: https://www.amazon.com/Life-Teaching-Masters-East-Volume/dp/.... Please read the comments. ;-)
libx··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
Check the progress in https://trello.com/c/UgsrhiHf/143-macosx-gui-backend 107 out of 120 tasks for OSX GUI backend are already completed.
libx··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
Try Red (www.red-lang.org)! It's not version 1.0 yet, GUI for OSX and Python is coming, for Windows and Android has already arrived. Small, light, great.
libx··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
You haven't heard about Red (http://www.red-lang.org), have you? With some Kb you can ship GUI executables for Windows, Android, OSX and Linux. (OSX and Linux soon).

Try it and report back the amount of Kb (not Mb) used.

libx··on The truth about Lisp (2006)
I'm also looking to learn a Lisp, maybe Clojure, maybe some scheme. Clojure for me has a big drawback (and also an advantage) to run in a highly complex system, at least as I perceive it, as I've never done anything in Java. What does one need to learn from Java world to program in Clojure?

I understand perfectly what you say about the hacks with procedural languages. There's why I'm going for a functional language soon.

Do you use a common SQL databse with Clojure or did you go the full route with Datomic? Do you use Clojure for desktop apps? For mobile apps? Or just back-end stuff?

libx··on Ask HN: What programming languauges does the High Frequency Trading Firms use?
See the documentary 'The Wall Street Code' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw3XtscVCVI AFAICR one of the protagonists (Haim Bodek) said his company had one million lines of C (or mainly C) code for HFT trading.
libx··on Why Aren’t There Simple Programming Languages?
Have you checked Rebol and Red? Maybe not. http://www.red-lang.org/
libx··on A fresh benchmark of major Scheme implementations
It would be nice to include some Lisp implementations, like Picolisp and Newlisp.
libx··on Portugal’s Example: What Happened After It Decriminalized All Drugs
As in everything, to understand the logic of drug prohibition, we have to follow the money. The money goes out of:

1. everyone taking drugs that have money to buy them

2. from their families

3. from everyone else in the society, as people are robbed by addicted people that could not afford to buy the drugs by themselves.

The drug money is distributed along a stair of levels which end in a few people earning a lot of the money of society. These people have the power to influence politicians, the media, etc, to keep drugs prohibited. Why? Because when something is prohibited the price of goods is higher. If it was allowed a free market for drugs (as there is for wine, beer and other beverages) the price of drugs would drop significantly. And guess what? This is no good for the drug lords, neither for politicians and other who benefit from the status quo.

In Portugal half was done. Half remains to be done. Still, a good initiative.

libx··on Ask HN: How to handle 50GB of transaction data each day? (200GB during peak)
I would consider Unicage for your demands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_C5GBblkH8 https://www.bsdcan.org/2013/schedule/attachments/244_Unicage...

In a shell (modified for speed and ease of use) get, insert, update data in a simple way, without all the fat from other mainstream (Java) solutions.

libx··on [course] Introduction to Functional Programming in OCaml
I'm taking the Ocaml course and abandoned the one of F# from Edx/Microsoft that started a couple weeks ago. The Ocaml course is of much better quality in my opinion.
libx··on Ask HN: How to write a natural language date time parser?
You can check Rebol http://www.rebol.com/ and the new Red http://www.red-lang.org/ programming languages. The latter one not yet production ready.

In Rebol (and Red) you can just do the following: print 3:30am + 00:07:19 ; increment time values properly

Note that ';' is the identifier for a comment.

libx··on Ask HN: Which languages have the most compile-time checks?
You should check ML programming languages family, like Ocaml.
