lhoff··on Linus Torvalds on mRNA Vaccines
Its actually a perfect example. But for the opposit argument. A random software engineer has a much deeper understanding about the inner workings of GPU then the average non-software engineer. So its a perfect analogy for asking a nurse about a health related topic. He probably doesn't know much about the immune system but he definetly knows more then the average population.
lhoff··on Show HN: Zoom / Teams Open Source alternative for online learning
What would you say is the maximum of users in a single session if everyone has Video sharing activated.
lhoff··on Exxon Lost a Board Battle with a Small Hedge Fund
I use the reading mode of my Browser (Firefox). I have to be fast enough though. When the reading mode is loaded once, its not changed by javascript.
lhoff··on Show HN: NocoDB – Open-Source Airtable Alternative
It doesn't allow any user to publish it under another licence but the copyright owner is eligible to do so.
lhoff··on Tell HN: Don't put your status page on the same domain as your app
While i like the idea I must say, not going to happen. Companies want to have the full control over the status page. At least those company that have service level agreements with their customers.
lhoff··on Bob Cassette Rewinder: Hacking Detergent DRM
Thats why I keep my more then 15 year old espresso machine and resist the urge to get me something fancier. If somethings brakes i can got to the local hardware store and buy stuff from plumbing supply. Its also a generic clone of the E61 machine so a lot of parts are interchangable and the inner workings are straight forward so said i don't even need a manual for the specific machine.

Luckily thats never gonna happen in Germany. At least not with a mandatory connection. The cellular coverage is way to bad for that. My parents live in a smaller village. The Dishwasher would have to stand on the upper balcony to get a network connection.
lhoff··on A serverless email server on AWS using S3 and SES
Something link that could be useful as disaster recovery action. I case of problems with the Mail infrastructure redirect the DNS to something like that and incoming e-mails won't get lost in the meantime. The standby cost for something like that is much lower then a independent secondary e-mail system.
lhoff··on Horses and Sparrows: The myth of 'trickle down' economics
I think thats the wrong analogy.

Trickle down would be to give the money to big successfull corporations and hopen that they are buying and funding startups with it.

lhoff··on AMD Reports Q1 2021 Earnings
I don't know anything about other regions but Zen3 Desktop CPUs are available in multiple stores in Germany and Europe.
lhoff··on So you want to tax the rich? OK, let's start with Harvard
They are only easy to enforce because we have a huge bureaucratic apparatus in place. Imagine all the work that goes into correctly registering all the sales and spending in companies as well as the other side that checks these reports.

Sales taxes are among the most inefficient taxes in existence.

I am in favor of higher taxes but taxes should be evaluated based on there influence on the market and there efficiency. Sales tax scores poor in both categories. Im a fan of the MMT since they propose another thinking about taxes.

lhoff··on Merge tag 'arm-Apple-M1-5.13' of Linux
He is the owner of a repair shop in New York and specializes in repairing Apple Products. He became famous for his Youtube Channel[1] where he regularly rages about Apples repair policy and for his regular appearance in Right-to-Repair Law hearings[2].

lhoff··on A lost tourist who thought Maine was San Francisco
How does one mix up Berlin and Dublin? Because of Pronunciation?
lhoff··on Minecraft vs. Roblox (2020)
One aspect is overlooked in the article.

When you are playing Minecraft you sooner or later want to have your own Server. There are of course "as a Service" offerings but i personally know 3 or 4 people who got into Linux / Admin stuff because they were running minecraft servers for there friends.

lhoff··on Minecraft vs. Roblox (2020)
I would mostly agree. The only bad move was that they ported Pocket/Bedrock Edition to Windows 10. Thats where most of the confusion orginiates from.
lhoff··on Minecraft vs. Roblox (2020)
I mean you're probably right in the sense that the peak of the Gauß-Distribution is probably shifting to the left. The absolute numbers are probably a different story. When more people get introduced to coding, more people are getting good and very good at it.

Think about sports. Are there more people that are bad at skiing in Austria compared to the Netherland? Yes (if you don't count the ones who never stood on skies). Are there more good skiiers in the Netherland compared to Austria? Absolutely not.

lhoff··on Live feed of Starship SN10 flight test [video]
The big question is imho if the behaviour is a symptom of the same underlaying character prepositions that cause his great success.

Don't get me wrong i don't want to apologize his behaviour.

lhoff··on SnowFS – a fast, scalable version control file storage for graphic files
Maybe a mixed approach similar to what dvc [0] is doing. Fully integrated with git but tracked and stored elsewhere.

lhoff··on Dropbox Passwords
I think he's talking about Bitwarden beeing names as an alternative to Dropbox Passwords.
lhoff··on Futuristic Helmet Has Its Own HEPA Filter and Fan
I used to have the same problem. My solution is that a use a foam tape and put that in the inside of the mask on the area around my nose. The uper area of the mask is air tight and therefore no fogged glases. It looks like that but slimmer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000CBIFD
lhoff··on Samsung Confirms AMD RDNA GPU in Next Exynos Flagship
Up until noe, they haven't even managed to build a competitor to the Snapdragon CPUs.

But let's see what they are up to.

lhoff··on My ISP Is Killing My Idle SSH Sessions
That doesn't really help when transfering a file. That was one of the user cases where the author had problem with.
lhoff··on Pixar's Render Farm
Not anymore. The new Ampere based Quadros and Teslas just launched with up to 48GB of RAM. A special datacenter version with 80Gb is also already announced: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/data-center/a100/

They are really expensive though. But chassis and rackspace also isn't free. If one beefy node with a couple GPUs can replace have a rack of CPU only Nodes the GPUs are totally worth it.

I'm not too familiar with 3D rendering but in other workloads the GPU speedup is so huge that if its possible to offload to the GPU it made sense to do it from a economical perspective.

lhoff··on Apple has threatened to remove Amphetamine from the App Store
You didn't read the post, did you?

Please go and read the post. Especially the following section: https://github.com/x74353/SaveAmphetamine#what-arguments-can...

The App is named Amphetamine and not Meth which imho is a big difference.

lhoff··on Ask HN: Best Talks of 2020?
Well the time before that matters as well. Someone has to prepare everything.
lhoff··on Under the hood of the Subaru Levorg: ADAS and programmable logic
Probably because he already knew that Tesla hat something like that. But since Tesla is (sadly) still and outlier as the don't produce gas engine cars it might not be seen as a company in the same field.
lhoff··on Snebu – Simple Network Encrypting Backup Utility
Inital commit of snebu was from january 6th in 2013 while restic's alpha release was in 2015. So snebu is older. That probably also explains why sha1 was chosen in the first place.
lhoff··on Ask HN: Best Talks of 2020?
I think the main reason is the tradition. It was in the beginning a small get together of some nerds that had vacations due to Christmas but were bored.

Then it got bigger and bigger. And now there are many reasons to keep it that way. No competing events, free choice of the venue, free hotels, school holidays and so on.

I'd also say that there are more atheists in the hacker community then in the general population.

lhoff··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
Hint for Windows users that also want to have something like that:

That closest you can probably get to that is with Powertoys FancyZones. Its not exactly a tiling windows manager but its close enough.

lhoff··on Zero-click, wormable, cross-platform remote code execution in Microsoft Teams
Are we looking at the same page?

Here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/msrc/bounty-microsoft-cloud is a header "IN-SCOPE DOMAINS AND ENDPOINTS" with alist of domains and that is described with the following: "Only the following domains and endpoints are eligible for bug bounty awards."

I couldn't find something that would match the Teams app on general bug bounty website either (https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/msrc/bounty)
