Umm I think you commented under the wrong parent
lgierth··on ISP Association Nominates Mozilla as “Internet Villain”
If I were in an ISP's shoes, I'd be thankful for Mozilla to neutralize the legal attack surface which apparantly is running DNS for customers.
lgierth··on The Tragedy of Herakles
Peter Weiss' Aesthetics of Resistance comes with another interesting read of Herakles, as a protector of the working class.

The book starts with a group of young workers extensively studying and discussing the Pergamon Frieze, which depicts the battle between the Gods and the Giants, and Herkales' story in 1936 Berlin.

lgierth··on Go is Google's language, not ours
Afaik GCC's Go has been pretty complete and up-to-date for a couple of years.
lgierth··on Peermaps
Most of it uses Dat and IPFS under the hood.
lgierth··on Google Maps: Bird Mode
Reminds me of Banana Driven Development (h/t @pcalcado) -- if you can't come up with a good name right away, name it banana or some other fruit, or generally something that's so ridiculous that you just have to find a proper name for it.
lgierth··on OnionShare 2 adds anonymous dropboxes
Being able to embed the Tor daemon right into my program, and still using an existing Tor daemon if available, is pretty pretty compelling.

Mh no, the shadow's position depends not just on the planes movement, but also on earth's rotation and trajectory.
lgierth··on First .dev Domains Go Live
The sunrise period for trademark owners was a whole month until today, with a much more reasonable price tag.

What are you talking about?
lgierth··on Vuvuzela: Metadata-private messaging
There signal-cli [1] which works pretty nicely. Uses SMS for initial signup.

lgierth··on Openwrt 18.06.2 released
There is hundreds: https://openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_864

And sub-$20 routers have been well supported for years (e.g. TP-Link TL-WR841)

lgierth··on If 5G Is So Important, Why Isn’t It Secure?
I agree that the security of communication between endpoints mustn't be trusted to the lower layers, but this is only the application layer.

The network itself needs to be secured just as well -- thinking especially of SS7 and BGP and the likes here.

Racist behaviour by German police is a thing. No need to call "bullshit" on something that you haven't experienced yourself yet.

> German police will file your case in any case.

Yeah, that's what you'd expect. Doesn't always happen.

lgierth··on Unions Did Great Things for the American Working Class
There's the relatively young Tech Workers Coalition: https://techworkerscoalition.org && https://twitter.com/techworkersco
lgierth··on US Dept of Energy AS32982 Network Possibly BGP Hijacked by China Telecom
A typical mitigation at the ASN level is to have allowlists of exactly which prefixes your downstsream ASN is expected and allowed to announce. I don't recall the name of this technique, and it's somewhat widely deployed, but definitely far from widely enough to secure Internet routing.

Individual end users don't have much of a chance to avoid BGP hijacking. You could continuously run traceroutes to your destination network, but then that gives you not much guarantee that individual TCP connections will take the same route as those ICMP packets.

lgierth··on US Dept of Energy AS32982 Network Possibly BGP Hijacked by China Telecom
It's not neccessarily AS4812 / China Telecom announcing this themselves. Anyone could be announcing AS4812,192.208.19.0/24. For some degree of attribution, you need to go and figure out where the actual announcement is coming from.

The "beauty" of BGP :)

edit: It's also interesting to note that the bogus announcement is for /24, which is more specific than the original /23, so it takes precedence.

lgierth··on Archive.org donations are currently matched by a generous supporter 2-to-1
I don't know :) But I do have one of their "GAME NOT OVER" shirts from when they launched emulation of old games in the browser. Played Prince of Persia in Firefox with Brewster Kahle :)
lgierth··on Archive.org donations are currently matched by a generous supporter 2-to-1
The publishers of these games might not be terribly into making trouble.

Copyrighted music and video however (stuff that MPAA is interested in) is not available online, and you actually have to go to the physical Archive in SF to access them. In that sense it works kind of like a library.

lgierth··on Operation Luigi: How I hacked my friend without her noticing (2017)
This is certainly not how trust in human relationships is reinforced :)

Get consent before hacking your friends.~~

Edit: This is awkward - I was sure I read it one of the previous times it was posted. Chapeau!

lgierth··on Project Volutus: Micro data centers at base of cell towers
Storage density growth has long outpaced bandwidth growth, so it makes more sense to have caches everywhere (and Internet protocols that can make use of them), then betting on growing bandwidth.
lgierth··on Gab.com Booted from Hosting Provider Due to User Account
I think they were saying, if money is free speech, and racist slurs are free speech, and anti-semitic conspiracy theories are free speech, then the quality standard for something to be free speech is low, and any mildly sympathetic individual or organization would put their own standard for free speech higher.
lgierth··on Gab.com Booted from Hosting Provider Due to User Account
Are there others in the >100,000 users range?
lgierth··on Gab.com Booted from Hosting Provider Due to User Account
"Lynching" is a terrible term to use for filling out an online abuse form, while there have been 11 people murdered by a white supremacist.
lgierth··on Gab.com Booted from Hosting Provider Due to User Account
We're talking about more than just saying things here.

11 people have been murdered by a white supremacist, and Gab is the online community for white supremacists / neonazis / anti-semites, one of whom is the murderer, whose actions have been heavily influenced by the specific culture of that community. What does the white-people stuff you allegedly saw "on twitter" have to do with that?

Come on, really?

lgierth··on Someone used my IPFS gateway for phishing
No, js-ipfs can run a full ipfs node right in a web page. It'll peer with other nodes over websockets, and do relaying if neccessary.
lgierth··on Forensic Architecture
Here's also a presentation on the project itself, at last year's 34C3: https://media.ccc.de/v/34c3-9276-forensic_architecture
lgierth··on Forensic Architecture
I encountered Forensic Architecture last year, but didn't look into any of their other work until now, so thanks a lot for posting this! I got to witness a presentation about their analysis of a murder carried out by the neonazi terror group National Socialist Underground:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUA8AK02Zlw

> Presentation of Forensic Architecture on the Case of Halit Yozgat and the question if German secret service agent Andreas Temme´s testimony was truthful. Presented at the people´s Tribunal Unraveling NSU-Complex, May 18 2017. www.nsu-tribunal.de/en

Truly remarkable work, the other stuff too.

lgierth··on Mirror of OpenStreetMap databasefiles on IPFS
This is great! :) Add it to https://archives.ipfs.io and we'll make sure to get this pinned on an ipfs-cluster setup.
lgierth··on Dropbike: Data Breaches and Free Bike Rides
You're right - I basically timestamped the then-current version of the name into a hacker news comment :)
