lfx··on Amazon Announces RTO for Employees
But you can copy all of the contents to tickets, emails, etc. All is not lost.
lfx··on Python-patterns – A collection of design patterns/idioms in Python
It looks like bat https://github.com/sharkdp/bat
lfx··on PowerToys – open-source Windows utilities
Yes, I've got this too https://imgur.com/a/ZxClPqQ It's odd that it tells nothing about why?
lfx··on Show HN: A game that tests how well you know your local area
Awesome game! Works wonderful for Vancouver, BC.

One thing tho - several times I got the same street 2 times in a row.

lfx··on Show HN: HN Avatars in 357 bytes
oh, how does it look?
lfx··on Ask HN: Resources on how Google/Facebook etc. approach software design?
It's a very well written book! Short and sweet. Not that novel as expected, but a still very good read for a weekend.
lfx··on A map of the US where city names are replaced by most Wikipedia’ed resident
Also, you need practice, write 5 ideas a day. Doesn't matter what ideas, things might exist or not exist. After a while, you will have a pile of garbage with some really good jewels between them.

PS. It was mentioned in the book, I don't recall which one.

lfx··on The AWS EC2 Windows Secret Sauce
I'm pretty sure GCE does the same, just last week I had a need to test something and with 1vCPU instance was ready in about 3-4 mins. Next time will check logs to confirm it. But seems the reasanoble thing to do.
lfx··on Show HN: ApproveAPI – Real-Time user approvals via email, SMS, and push
Looks cool!

Can this be used for phone number verification? If so how this would work? The user would get a text with a link? Or shortcode?

lfx··on Show HN: ApproveAPI – Real-Time user approvals via email, SMS, and push
It seems it's made with slate -> https://github.com/lord/slate
lfx··on Google Cloud Console Incident
Also seems BitQuery having issues too.

Wondering if this end up being related with Summer Time change? Happened many times in the past in companies where I worked.

lfx··on Ask HN: What is the best keyboard driven Git clients?

lfx··on Snapchat weighs what was once unthinkable: permanent snaps
By the way, OkCupid and Tinger, and PlentyOfFish some other belong to the same group/company. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Match_Group

It's likely that they making all apps alike to match most grossing.

lfx··on Ask HN: What are some great security blogs, podcasts or Twitters to follow?

less news topic, but in depth https://defensivesecurity.org/

lfx··on Ask HN: Resources to prepare for a Software Developer interview in 2019?
This https://dev.to/ice_lenor/do-i-want-to-work-in-this-company-o... has a lot of good questions for a candidate to ask, worth the reading time.
lfx··on Ask HN: Canadian and American starting an online business?
Justin Jackson (CA) started start-up with American co-founder. He podcasts and is active on social media. I think he may have some pointers if you reach out.

lfx··on Ask HN: I am building Lazylog (logging for lazy devs) in public right now
Props for shipping!

Also initially read - lazydog as name, it would be cool name as well :)

I see it being useful for doing quick testing or hackathons, when setting up some infrastructure is not worth it the hassle or time.

Would suggest adding PayPal donate button for free tear users.

As an additional feature would suggest adding export of logs as archive or export/import to some other log aggregators.

lfx··on ForgJs – A lightweight object validator
I have seen used this quite a bit https://github.com/Julian/jsonschema

Here is some sample https://gist.github.com/nmarley/afe61a36f71ed1e4a9728c0f5f6f...

lfx··on New for AWS Lambda: Use Any Programming Language and Share Common Components
Can't wait for this too, it seems kind of old limitation not suitable for layers at all. But on another hand - lambda should be small and fast if something out of limits is needed then fargate or ecs should be used.

That said I I hope they increase the limit to at least 500 Mb sooner than next reInvent.

lfx··on How Restaurants Got So Loud
This sounds like an awesome place! Do you have pay extra for anything? I would happily agree to pay like 10$ for some time just to run away when I have to work.

Additional extra points would be if they would offer some external monitors as well. This was my dream for a while now.

lfx··on Show HN: Extract main ideas in your texts with SummarizeBot
Same thoughts:

1) I did try on https://www.reuters.com/article/us-southkorea-prisonstay-idU... and from 20% and 40% summary I have no clue of the actual meaning of the article. It seems that it just gets some sentences out, but they don't really combine in summary as a whole.

2) And seems like it has some fake news element as well "fake: 0.343". Confusing.

To sum up my experience: I confused, real: 0.9; fake: 0.1.

Anyhow it seems that has some great potential and may be useful in some general knowledge fact summarization in the future.

lfx··on Ask HN: How would you queue and process 10K+ long running jobs
It would be easily done by AWS SQS you can put as many elements to queue as you want (some limits apply, but may be easily lifted) and then remove items from the queue when the job is done, by tunning invisibility time-out you make work by your requirements. You can use lambdas (too short for your case) or ec2 or Fargate as your workes and it may scale up or down depending on loads. What is cool that you can create multiple shards if you could predict how long jobs would take so some could be done in lambda other using ec2 thus reducing costs.
lfx··on Singapore to test facial recognition on lampposts, stoking privacy fears
I'm wondering if the system can track people with face masks (like one in the article picture)? And if they can track people who were recognized and later put on the mask and vice versa. That would be really scary.
lfx··on Ask HN: Any people who work at a small shop, and prefer AWS?
All the tooling around is great, support/faq/docs are great. You can scale upscale down fast, and testing new ideas with AWS services is painless even for the costing view. I'm not too concern about general costing compared with DO or Heroku. Another benefit is if AWS is down, "half" of the internet is down, so explaining this to a customer you can just tell - "AWS is down."
lfx··on In the Works – AWS Region in Milan, Italy
For me constantly gasp before sentences sound bit weird. It would be better if this occurs only after long sentences, would sound more natural.

Nevertheless sounds really good!

lfx··on Tools of the Trade, from Hacker News
Great list! Thank you author!

Side note - does anybody tried clockify.me ? Looks awesome, and it's free! Wondering how they earn money and how reliable they are.

lfx··on Sysadmin war story: the network ate my font
Love those stories. Read some similar ones in the past. First time when debugging - I'm looking into the cache.
lfx··on Ask HN: What would you do with 6 months?
1 month would plan the trip.

3 months travel.

2 months back to working rhythm, look for clients, ideas, etc.

I would really fortunate to get such possibility during this year season!

lfx··on Ask HN: Best tiny JavaScript framework?
If you need tiny footprint best idea would be just to use Vanilla JS. But you can look here for some libs/frameworks for specific parts http://microjs.com/
