Can't say I had the most favorable phone interview with you guys, but I did appreciate the incredibly responsive process even through the "proper channels".
lfowles··on AirPods Pro
It's somewhere between a headache and physical discomfort. Hard to describe because I've only ever experienced it with active noise cancelling (over the ear) headphones and I gave those up 5+ years ago.
lfowles··on AirPods Pro
All active noise cancelling headphones just hurt my ears after extended periods of time.
lfowles··on We Prefer Coding Challenges
Same, I've found that I get further in the interview process when dealing with companies that screen with a coding challenge.
lfowles··on The “Myths List” is a communication antipattern
Would you go so far as to say Myths Lists Considered Harmful? :)
lfowles··on Ask HN: How can I work towards building a company while employed?
It'd probably be easier to create a list of companies without

I once had a professor that would write on the blackboard with his right hand and erase with his left simultaneously. Quite a struggle to keep up with equations on those days he chose to fly through lectures like that!

That's exactly how I felt about the first half of the robotics nanodegree I took and the reason I didn't pursue the second half.

Noticed the same when I switched to an Alphagrip and could only maintain 50-60wpm.
lfowles··on Improbable and Epic Games establish $25M fund for ‘more open engines’
Looks like the focus is more-open engines, not more open-engines reading the source blog post.
lfowles··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of your creative thoughts?
Unless the ideas are absolutely critical I mentally explore them and then let them slide on out of my mind. Great ideas seem to strike more than once and I am better prepared to act on an idea that has come up multiple times vs one that I just came up with and feel certain is the greatest idea ever (for now....).

lfowles··on Ask HN: Scolded on a job interview for not namespacing
> Has anyone else had a horror interview like this?

Here's my horror story from last year where the interviewer was getting frustrated at my mistakes in dictating C++ over the phone and abruptly cut off the interview with "It's clear you are not right for this position. Goodbye."

This was for a hedge fund infrastructure dev position... I wonder if there's something in the water?

Just seeing the chir.ag domain brought back pleasant memories :)

I also spent an unreasonable amount of time in that era at dofi blog playing many other variants.

lfowles··on Did Facebook’s faulty data push publishers to make terrible decisions on video?
Most Facebook videos have captions burned in at this point.
lfowles··on Did I just waste 3 years?
Out of curiosity what titles do you have in mind when you say "deep economic simulator"?
lfowles··on Hire people who aren’t proven
Pretty much! After repeatedly failing interviews for the past year, I've lost hope of having a "normal" dev job again. Studying for interviews took too much time away from things I'd rather be focusing on if I wasn't going to be employed.

I'm now trying to get a business off the ground in a field I've dabbled in for years (game dev), but there's no expectation it'll get me past minimum wage :/

lfowles··on Hire people who aren’t proven
That someone didn't come fully formed and ready for OS development out of the womb. It's a good argument for looking at track record when hiring for senior positions though.

I've been interested in many fields, but can't afford to take time to establish myself in them unless there is also significant interest from a company looking to hire me.

lfowles··on Ask HN: What Engine Is Better for games: Unity, Unreal or Unigine?
Don't forget that Unreal has Blueprints. You could practically finish an entire game on blueprints alone! I recall that The Solus Project was almost entirely blueprint based.
lfowles··on Ask HN: How do I choose between a job offer from Google and a promising startup?
It means they get far enough to have those whiteboard riddler interviews.

lfowles··on Engineering whiteboard interviews: yay or nay?
Thanks! I really enjoy coming up with the themed minigames. The next one planned is a Kanban board minigame ... think of a cross between Tetris and the boardgame Patchwork.

lfowles··on Engineering whiteboard interviews: yay or nay?
Yes, it was the final straw and led to me rejecting that industry as a whole :)
lfowles··on Engineering whiteboard interviews: yay or nay?
Oof, I've had that experience during a technical phone screen with a different "hires only the best" company. I was asked to write (over the phone) a trivial statistical algorithm and started to describe the algorithm: "Function F returns a double and has two parameters, pointer to the start of the double array P and integer N for length of array." Apparently on the other end of the line was a human compiler that kept rejecting my input and preferred "double F open parens double star P comma int n close parens"!
lfowles··on Engineering whiteboard interviews: yay or nay?
My favorite interviews have been those that had a small project as a screener and then proceeded to have you modify and/or explain decisions regarding the project at the in-person stage.
lfowles··on Engineering whiteboard interviews: yay or nay?
One particular expectation when whiteboard coding for an interview is that there is little/no downtime, you must be making progress or talking about your thoughts. Incidentally, 50% of my thought process then becomes "How do I talk about what I'm thinking about? Oh no, I'm only thinking about talking about what I'm thinking about..."
