lfciv··on Apple passwords deserve an app
I find 1Password to be sort of a pain when signing up for new accounts on my iphone – the generate secure password & autofill doesn't always work for me – on the web it's great though
lfciv··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
Seems like we'll sort of inevitably end up with a sort of cross-site verifiable identity on the internet. All content requiring some sort of verified user backing it. Generally will be interesting to see what an internet with less anonymity looks like.
lfciv··on Ask HN: Is buying an expensive standing desk worth it?
+1 Highly recommend the Flexispot – just make sure you get the one with the single piece desktop (had a friend accidentally buy one where the desktop comes in two pieces)
lfciv··on JSON for Linking Data
Bit of a tangent, but it'll be interesting to see how standards designed to make the web more machine-readable are viewed/treated as more and more content on the web is ultimately consumed and provided to users higher up in the funnel via LLMs
lfciv··on Ask HN: What Mic would you recommend for a music setup?
I have a mic stand & pop guard but probably need the lead & clip

I could go to Guitar Center or Sam Ash near me

lfciv··on Ask HN: What Mic would you recommend for a music setup?
I'm currently thinking I probably won't do a USB mic and I'll get a USB interface – probably the Focusrite Scarlett

Mostly recording vocals as my main instrument is my keyboard which I usually hook up directly to my computer via usb midi

lfciv··on Your reading should be messy
Funny I sometimes do the same with my copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
lfciv··on Ask HN: What Mic would you recommend for a music setup?
Awesome thanks for the detailed response – this is really helpful. Curious if my budget went up to $400 would your recommendation change? A friend of mine had also mentioned the SM7B
lfciv··on Your reading should be messy
My personal take is books read better when they're "read". That is, when they've been used time and again. I tried switching to Kindle, but I found that I read less.
lfciv··on How Does GitHub Work?
It'll be interesting to see how things evolve over time though – with https://github.dev/github/dev it seems like Github is trending towards trying to solve similar problems as Vercel or Replit.
lfciv··on How do those collaborative whiteboards work?
I thought this was a great read for a high-level overview of Figma's approach: https://www.figma.com/blog/how-figmas-multiplayer-technology...
lfciv··on Ask HN: Do you refuse to do coding challenges for software engineer interviews?
I figure as long as it's an hour or less it's fair? I once had one that was an hour and a half, but they actually compensated me for the time (sorta feels like zirp in hindsight tbh)
lfciv··on Freedom Clock
We could make things easier by keeping timezones consistent – the fact that they move is what makes things hard.
lfciv··on Tell HN: I was laid off from my job and I feel better than ever
I guess the issue with allowing voluntary departures is that you could lose numbers of engineers in vital functions. Also I imagine there tends to be a bias towards your most confident engineers leaving since they know they'll have the highest likelihood of easily finding a new role?
lfciv··on Engineers Need to Write
People tend to also underestimate the value of humor and pacing in writing. Injecting a little bit of comedy into everything you write (including technical specs) can be incredibly valuable.

That being said – it's really hard.

lfciv··on Hello Dolly: Democratizing the magic of ChatGPT with open models
I wouldn't underestimate the power of momentum
lfciv··on Amazon, other retailers revamp 'free' shipping as costs soar
Free shipping at $35 on Amazon Fresh always felt too good to be true in manhattan – it was way cheaper to get your groceries shipped in from their warehouses than to shop in the city itself
lfciv··on Remind HN: Unplug, take a break and go outside
Love the comedy club near me because they take away your phone at the door – I'm always surprised how many times I instinctively check my empty pocket during the show
lfciv··on Tell HN: I was laid off from my job and I feel better than ever
Some friends at Facebook have expressed conflicted feelings around the ongoing threat of layoffs – they sort of want to leave the company for something smaller, but they have an incentive to stay because they may get severance if their function is cut next month
lfciv··on Ask HN: Do you still use browser bookmarks?
For websites I visit a lot I like adding a custom search engine to Chrome. If you go settings -> search engines -> manage, you can add a new keyword to open a certain webpage.

For example if I type "pr" it takes me to a Github Pull Requests page that I visit daily. If I type in "dd" it takes me to Datadog.

lfciv··on Ask HN: Tools to learn music theory?
This is a bit of a less traditional way to learn, but I'm big on learning from chords. Find a song you love on Ultimate Guitar Tabs and learn to play the chords – play them in different inversions and experiment with tweaks (adding a 7 or 2). Over time as you get comfortable with those chords and their inversion start to fill in the gaps following your ear. Personally I find this style of playing new songs more motivating as I can play a variety of pop songs and I can play them quickly and make them my own. An unfortunate side effect – I'm not great at sight reading
