lewispollard··on Global tourism is booming. These people would rather it wasn't
You say you don't travel, but have you travelled before? Have you attempted to answer your own question experientially, rather than rely on rhetoric?

Because you could make the same arguments for basically any activity: would you reduce playing a sport or learning a craft as mere marketing by their respective industries, and make judgements on them based on philosophy, rather than just try out playing the sport or doing the craft for a while to see for yourself what it's like? Philosophy only goes so far, it's practice that allows you to become embodied in the activity and gain insight.

lewispollard··on Human Life
"Zen" just means meditation, derived from Chan in Chinese Buddhism, which is derived from Jhana in Pali. It's not a fantasy ideal, but something you do.

Buddhist practice, in general, isn't interested in creating fantasy ideals, and it also isn't really a mere philosophy - it's a practical method with some ethical and social teachings. That method is designed to bring you into intimate contact with the "realities of desire and personhood", which most of us are almost entirely ignorant of, and avoid confronting through the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain.

Actually, happiness is the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice - happiness free from conditions. If you had an accident during a hike and couldn't hike any more, you developed issues digesting certain foods such that you couldn't eat what you consider good food any more, your loved ones passed away or left, presumably your happiness would also take a hit with those things, the things you depend on for happiness. Buddhist practice doesn't preclude doing any of those things, it just trains the mind not to rely on them for wellbeing, and to find a deeper source of wellbeing that can always be contacted regardless of current circumstance.

lewispollard··on Bye Bye, AI: How to block Google's AI overviews and just get search results
Teenagers are rarely hired as professional drivers either, and they often learn how to write code.
lewispollard··on Veo
Please elaborate, because I certainly don't.
lewispollard··on Kate editor on all platforms
I mean, it says quite clearly that no one has built an up-to-date version of Amarok for Windows since 2013, but the bug is fixed in the source code and has been for a long time. That no one has stepped up to package Amarok for Windows in that time isn't a bug.
lewispollard··on If Inheritance is so bad, why does everyone use it?
I don't follow - role playing games are often most suited to ECS, because you want the kind of emergent gameplay that independent gameplay systems acting on component composition gives you - and the kind of flexibility it allows in composing weapons, spells, buffs/debuffs, and so on, vs a strictly hierarchical OOP approach.
lewispollard··on Psychiatric risks for worsened mental health after psychedelic use
Just because a subjective experience is ineffable and difficult to describe adequately doesn't mean it's nonsense. It's convenient to lump those things all together, but it's not accurate.

After all, asking someone what it was like to stand at the top of a mountain they'd just climbed, admiring the view, you're likely to get similar "hand-waving" answers about connection to something bigger than them, but you probably wouldn't argue that climbing a mountain and taking in the view is a worthless experience that amounts to nonsense.

lewispollard··on If Inheritance is so bad, why does everyone use it?
I only really know of Bevy that uses ECS for the rendering backend, but iirc even that doesn't really use entities and components, but rather its resource system, such that rendering commands are stored in the ECS "world" but as globally unique resources, rather than entities and components. But, my knowledge doesn't extend to AAA engines, perhaps things are done more extensively there.
lewispollard··on If Inheritance is so bad, why does everyone use it?
Well, it does work well for the engine part of game engines, and graphics related code in particular as the GP says - it's just gameplay code where OO falls a bit flat.
lewispollard··on Pilot study shows ketogenic diet improves mental illness
Right; for ADHD a keto diet did very little to improve my symptoms, but when I was doing it I was still eating quite impulsively and without a proper schedule or meal plan. Doing those things, creating a routine, regardless of what I was eating, made a big improvement to my symptoms in that it created a lot of structure, routine and planning that was previously absent.
lewispollard··on Pilot study shows ketogenic diet improves mental illness
No? Scientific experiments should work to rule out alternative causes, that's the whole point of it. Introducing a lot of structure to someone's life that was previously very unstructured (as diet often is in mentally unwell people) could be part of the reason their symptoms improve, rather than necessarily the diet itself. It's an alternative cause that I think should be ruled out before assuming it's the content of the diet itself that caused the difference.

Control groups are not "whataboutism". If adding that kind of control showed keto was specifically helping these people, then that'd be great; but since the study doesn't seem to have done that, it's hard to be confident in the conclusion.

Instead, they gave the participants cookbooks, and assigned them a personal coach to help them plan and cook their meals and follow through with the diet change. Giving that kind of personal support to change habits and make more considered choices to someone with mental health challenges is bound to make them feel better, no?

lewispollard··on Pilot study shows ketogenic diet improves mental illness
Haven't read the paper, but I can't tell from this summary article if they tested any other diet programs as a control - is it possible that the improvement comes from being more ordered and thoughtful about food choices, rather than from the specific diet used?
lewispollard··on Vasopressin deficiency: driver of social impairment and fluid imbalance in ASD? [pdf]
Saying "I wrote in my book that..." is basically the same value, in the absence of further information. We don't know how qualified the author is to make such claims, what the motive behind writing the book was, what sources they used, and so on. Even if you read the book, you might not satisfactorily find that information, or sources may themselves be misrepresented. Anyone can write and publish a book these days, making any claim, misinterpreting data, wilfully or otherwise.

If the person you replied to wrote their anecdote about their nephew in a book, would you find it credible then?

lewispollard··on Vasopressin deficiency: driver of social impairment and fluid imbalance in ASD? [pdf]
Can't tell if this is sarcasm or not...
lewispollard··on Multi-Threading and Mutation
> even as recently as 2012 the most common advice was "avoid threads and use processes."

Ok, I know in the grand scheme of things this may seem recent, but that was 12 years ago. Has the story really not changed since then?

lewispollard··on Vulkan Foliage rendering using GPU Instancing
Yes, but support isn't great for older cards so they're not commonly used.
lewispollard··on Psychopathological Correlates of Conspiracy Beliefs
If you believe in conspiratorial activities for which there is proof or substantial evidence, then they're no longer theories, right?
lewispollard··on SuperTux
It's a little odd that there's a wasm build that's seemingly only available for download from the official sources, rather than being playable on the web.
lewispollard··on Does this 8088 code in the Leisure Suit Larry 2 game do anything?
That would be great if it worked like that, but for the same reasons that the parent comments lamented about, it rarely does. Often the answer marked "correct" isn't as correct as something in a comment or another answer.
lewispollard··on Programming book authors: put all the code in the book
Print code in the book, and have a URL you can check for errata. That's how it always used to be done, anyway.
lewispollard··on The Japanese philosophy for a no-waste world
In Dwarf Fortress it's essential to get a repeating work order for shell crafts set up early to prevent shells taking up all the stockpile space, and give you some extra cash when the trading caravan rolls around.
lewispollard··on What does the cerebellum do?
I think it was a joke - The Ramones have a song with lyrics about a missing cerebellum, but it's a song about a fictional character with a lobotomy.
lewispollard··on Murder is a pixel art ECS game engine in C#
> how systems of the same kind get ordered

Curious about this too - it can be frustrating to manually have to add new systems to a fixed list (the amount of times I've got stuck into building a system, then wonder why nothing's happening at runtime - because I forgot to new() it and add it to the system group!), but at the same time, it's often important to fix at compile-time the order that systems run in as they can often be implicitly dependent on each other. I didn't see anything in the docs from a glance that would allow this dependency/ordering to be explicitly marked, so I'm curious to see how it handles this.

lewispollard··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
No, it isn't. ADD (now classified as Inattentive type ADHD) isn't having a "short attention span", it's a huge swathe of neurological symptoms of which having a short attention span might be one, sometimes - but it isn't the defining characteristic. The name of the disorder is misleading. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, like schizophrenia and autism, and isn't something that can be induced through forms of entertainment (though those predisposed to the disorder genetically may find symptoms worsen through them).
lewispollard··on Rolls-Royce calls off bets on electric planes, says low-carbon fuel is future
I think the point was that the only reason burned fuel weighs nothing is because we throw out the waste into the atmosphere.
lewispollard··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
That's not what ADD is.
lewispollard··on Vore: A minimal, no-bullshit web-based RSS/atom feed reader
They totally know. It's an application for consuming feeds called vore.

> since vore consumes feeds, i thought the name was perfect!! i can't resist controversial names apparently :3

lewispollard··on .NET 8
Not a conventional option, but I've built a few (non-game) GUI applications using Godot game engine + C#. Works great, intuitive once you get the hang of the UI system, fully cross platform (for 3.x anyway - Godot 4 still has a few unsupported platforms - android, web, ios - android support is ready for next release, ios has a PR that I haven't checked up on but I believe it was also nearly ready. Just web that is lagging last I checked.)
lewispollard··on Steam Deck OLED
That's at least partially because of the mismatch between display refresh rate and frame rate - one of the things that makes the Deck's 40 fps mode on the internal display nice is that it also changes the display refresh rate to 40hz, making it look consistent and synchronised.
lewispollard··on Are we doing this again? Yes, we're doing this again
As a UK citizen, I feel jaded and bitter about this topic, as the government have been pushing to "ban encryption" in one form or another for... it feels like decades now? And each time they're advised against it or unable to get it into law, they draw up another proposal and try to sneak it in another way. It feels like one of these days, if they keep trying, they'll manage get it past the experts/lawyers somehow and it'll doom our privacy for a long time. So in the writing, I don't detect over-reaching self-righteousness or a lack of self-awareness - more, awareness of just how tiring and arduous this push for "encryption bans" is getting to everyone who understands the implications of it, and how frustrating it is to have to repeatedly deal with this kind of insidiousness in government.
