levmiseri··on Putting Thought into Things (2014)
An old article, but imo still relevant and interesting. My favorite part:

> Life and work would be so easy if a lack of quality could be explained in a sentence, and fixed with a better technique. If an artifact lacks quality, it is not just one aspect that needs improvement and then it’s all good. Quality is not just the method, just the form, or just the content. The lack of quality doesn’t cumulate in a spot, it is fundamental...

levmiseri··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026)
A webapp combining note taking with messaging. Recently added a new feature that allows for creating communities in a lightweight discord-like UI:

levmiseri··on Show HN: 1v1 coding game that LLMs struggle with
That’s true, I’m trying to figure out a better testing environment with a feedback loop.

I did try letting the models iterate on the bot code based on a summary of an end-of-game ‘report’, but that showed only marginal improvements vs. zero-shot

levmiseri··on Show HN: 1v1 coding game that LLMs struggle with
I’m not sure honestly. It could be some combination of bad spatial reasoning of the LLMs and lack of any training data for this specific challenge.

You can see replays for all of the matches if you hover over the cells in the table.

levmiseri··on Shades of Halftone
Stellar work. Combination of good design and good engineering really shines here.

This must have taken ages to produce. Thank you for it!

levmiseri··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2026)
I'm building a markdown editor with minimal UI and unusual features like real-real-time chat: https://kraa.io/hackernews

More about the product itself: https://kraa.io/about

(In a thread about 'how I stopped losing context'). What a fun idea!

The leaf is password-protected
levmiseri··on How Markdown took over the world
Thanks! And fair enough, self-hosting isn't something we can easily do right now, but I can see why that would be a super valuable feature. For monetizaton – yes, we will soon have a 'pro' tier that will have more storage space for media.
levmiseri··on How Markdown took over the world
Thank you, this is great feedback. I hope you will try to give Kraa another chance in the future as it should have at least these points covered.

- An option to render markdown syntax vs immediate translation is coming

- The horrendous bug around word-wrap (in firefox only) should be fixed within days

- adding [ ] for tasks as an alt to [].

As for changing paragraph style, this is purposefully 'hidden' inside the leaf settings (with tons of customization options for everything, not just paragraphs).

levmiseri··on How Markdown took over the world
> ...that it was too difficult or inconvenient to write out full HTML by hand

It's not necessarily that writing HTML or other markup flavors is harder (obviously it is), but the beauty of Markdown for me is that it's perfectly readable in its raw form as well as with an applied styling.

And speaking of customizing the 'look' of markdown, a shameless plug for a markdown editor I've been working on with extensive customization options: https://kraa.io/about

levmiseri··on Replacing JavaScript with Just HTML
A missed opportunity to not have all of these examples inline. The page/blog-post would be so much more convincing if it utilized all of these HTML replacements instead (or in addition) to linking to codepen.
levmiseri··on Show HN: Minimalist editor that lives in browser, stores everything in the URL
From purely privacy point of view it’s not. But if you also want markdown features, custom typography and easy sharing, this starts to make more sense.
levmiseri··on Show HN: Minimalist editor that lives in browser, stores everything in the URL
I really like this from a privacy point of view. So much so that I'm thinking about adding a purely URL-storage solution as an option in my https://kraa.io editor.
levmiseri··on Show HN: HN Wrapped 2025 - an LLM reviews your year on HN
I'd say about 60% correct: https://hn-wrapped.kadoa.com/levmiseri (not against Notion, plus some other made up stuff from the LLM)

But definitely a fun read!

levmiseri··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
A text editor that doesn't use AI is pretty much what I Show-HN-ed few days ago: https://kraa.io/about

I'll wait 10 years to post it again.

levmiseri··on Manual: Spaces
There is something oddly beautiful in invisible complexity. These little tweaks and minuscule details without which the whole would suffer in quality.
levmiseri··on LLM from scratch, part 28 – training a base model from scratch on an RTX 3090
Fully agree on the importance of taking notes and writing in general [1], but I absolutely do not want to train a model on my texts or attempt a personal style imitation. I can't fully put my finger on why exactly other than that it feels icky and that it would hinder my long-term writing quality rather than help it.

[1] I made an app to be my lifelong companion for this: https://kraa.io/about – No AI integration.

levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
It's free. And whatever you can use now will remain free. We will make sure to make this more obvious.

Our planned revenue is from a 'pro' tier that will have more storage space and potentially some advanced features and from selling short URLs (e.g. kraa.io/123).

levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
From what you have written, it actually sounds like Kraa 'might' be for you.

> I want the process of moving what I've written from the initial medium to online and publicly accessible to be as quick and painless as possible. With Kraa this is a matter of one click.

> If not, then... I just want it to be a file. Something I can save, archive, move, or whatever, like any other file. And this is more nuanced, but Kraa isn't using any proprietary file system. You can export your leaves to .md any time. Though it's not the same as e.g. Obsidian where it is literally a local file.

levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to say with this. That we need marketing to succeed? Or that the product has too much marketing (where?) and low quality?
levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
Thanks! The whole app is raven-themed. "Kraa" is the sound a raven makes in many languages and is a reasonably short name. It's not anyhow deeper than that.
levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
This is embarrassing and a recent regression on the latest update. Thanks for the report, we will fix this.
levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
Could you please expand on this? Showing only the features you need is pretty much what we tried to do. Keeping the writing UI minimal and distraction-free.
levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
What you see now will always be free. In 2026 we will introduce a 'pro' tier that will increase storage space for media/images and additional advanced features.

No self-hosting planned for now.

levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything
No, it is not. But that's high on the list of things we're focusing on.
levmiseri··on Show HN: Kraa – Writing App for Everything

levmiseri··on Where's the AI design Renaissance?
Lots of these discussions are simplifying design to 'making things look pretty'. That's just not true for even the more visual-based design disciplines like graphic design. And the 'regular' product design (ux/ui/ixd) happening in most tech companies has very little of this compared to the rest of the scope of what a designer really does.

Product design isn't a layer that you apply. It's not an output of some prompt. It's a difficult-to-define process of crafting the interface between the user and product's functionality.

levmiseri··on Notion releases offline mode
Only the Hider plugin did 'most' of the job. But yeah, Obsidian is good with this (with plugins)
