levemi··on Android Studio 2.0 Released
I don't have a feature that immediately comes to mind but I've run into it before when developing a plugin for intellij. It's just something to keep in mind. I don't understand why there's a separate IDE at all, why don't they just make Android Studio and IntelliJ plugin and leave it at that. Then there would be no issue. You can do so much with a plugin. There's really not much you can't change in the UI with a plugin.
levemi··on Android Studio 2.0 Released
> IntelliJ 15

That is not the most recent release of IntelliJ so it's at least one version behind. I should also note that IntelliJ has abandoned the version number name, the newest versions of the IntelliJ IDEs have the year now. The most recent IntelliJ IDEA is IntelliJ IDEA 2016.

That such a widely use fork of IntelliJ is behind a version is important for plugin developers who will be held back from adopting new features if they want to support Android Studio.

I think IntelliJ 15 shipped with its own JRE so it may be possible to write plugins in Java 8 instead of Java 6 for Android Studio though, so if that's true that's nice.

levemi··on Icelandic Prime Minister Resigns After Panama Data Leak
It bothers me that the options for office are untrustworthy career politicians who lie and corrupt their position or naive single issue ideologues who understand too little and expect too much. I kind of wish politics was boring. Just vote for the boring candidates who know how to do their job and are happy with an average salary. Bureaucrats, but competent ones.
levemi··on Icelandic Prime Minister Resigns After Panama Data Leak
It sounds like that Icelandic PM is a complete jerk who deserves everything that has happened to him. Obviously not putting the country first.
levemi··on Tokamak: A Rust IDE for Atom
Nice. Personally, I'm also excited about an IntelliJ plugin that's being worked on:

https://github.com/intellij-rust/intellij-rust

The rust tooling is really coming around.

levemi··on Head of Oracle Linux Moves to Microsoft
> but when you look at all the developers who were willing to hop on board the Go train with no supporting infrastructure

I think that speaks more towards engineers that like shiny new things that do something in particular in a new way which then help drum up excitement and an ecosystem around it.

C# is a very good language, but there's nothing new or shiny about it now. The tools and ecosystem around it are well established and managed by Microsoft and often involve spending some money.

The excitement for new things like Go, Rust or Julia etc are really not a signal for new support for C#. I think if anything Microsoft should continue their new support for llvm[0]. Windows is a fine operating system, I'd like to use it to do development and the closer I can get to developing things that then run on linux the easier my life will get and the more likely it will be that devs use Windows.

levemi··on Introducing React Storybook
> This is the first time, I got a feedback on this.

That comma placement is strange too. I'm thinking not a native english speaker. It's a great tool though. Not taking away from that at all. Thanks for making it. :)

levemi··on Lyft Carpool: A New Way to Commute
People shouldn't just worry about "no insurance" but also underinsurance. Minimal insurance in many areas is ridiculously too low. If you're signing up to do this as a driver you better #1 Tell your auto insurance company and #2 Up your insurance levels to the max (something you should probably do anyways if you can afford it).

If you're signing up to do this as a rider, well I don't think you should given the insurance problems and you not having any guarantee that someone will be held liable if they cause an accident.

Getting into a bad accident with an underinsured driver at fault is a life changing event.

levemi··on Changes to Npm's unpublish policy
npm has already says that they acted right in removing kik and that they would keep old versions of kik around as they were. So the dev would be forced to give it up and old versions would remain in npm.
levemi··on Change GitBucket user interface to make difference with GitHub
Clone when used in this sense doesn't mean copying. Copying pretty much means re-using the exact same source, like literally copy and pasted. A clone is just something that does the same thing as something else. I'm not saying GitBucket didn't copy or take code, I'm just saying that calling something a clone doesn't usually convey that they took code, it's just that they're very similar in what they do as another thing. You could say Gitlab is a GitHub clone but it doesn't look anything like GitHub (although it did at one time).
levemi··on I’ve Seen the Greatest A.I. Minds of My Generation Destroyed by Twitter
As I said elsewhere, if it was that simple Microsoft would have easily fixed the problem and turned it back on. Tay used AI concepts to work. It wasn't some simple chatbot constructed from markcov chains. It could construct accurate semantic meaning from what people said even if they said it using very sloppy english. It was pretty advanced AI for a chat program.
levemi··on I’ve Seen the Greatest A.I. Minds of My Generation Destroyed by Twitter
> Most children wouldn't fare well if raised by poisonous "nurturers"

That's just the thing, children aren't usually just dumped out into the public to fend for themselves until their parents have slowly conditioned them and exposed them a little at a time. Tay needed some of its contacts to have a higher learning priority assigned than just strangers. And these contacts should have guided Tay through the crap by messaging Tay when she was crossing boundaries or dealing with nasty people. It would likely require a real team of people to support given the volume Tay had to deal with and some automated tools.

levemi··on My dad hid his depression. I won’t hide mine
I used to have major depression. When I was in the military I nearly killed myself when I snuck a bullet from the rifle range back to my barracks. I was deeply in pain.

I think people who feel this way definitely need to seek help. I was lucky in that I didn't have to. What solved the worst of it for me was going out and being with people, having success (and epic failures) with dating.

Even though the depression never really neared suicidal levels again I was still mostly sad and I didn't realize this until many years later when I took some MDA. I hadn't ever done drugs before except some minor pot and MDA showed me the difference between what I had been feeling and what it was possible for me to feel like. I only took MDA a few times in my life and it's been over a decade since, but I learned from those experiences what kinds of things made me feel better and what it was possible to feel like and I've strived to achieve those feelings without taking drugs.

Now I feel happiness by achieving goals, being around people I love, having silent moments to myself, exercising, managing my stress levels and listening to music that makes me feel better.

It's not always a rose garden, life can be tough, but I never really feel like those awful pains of despair I lived in as a young adult.

levemi··on Poor Software QA Is Root Cause of TAY-Fail (Microsoft's AI Twitter Bot)
It wouldn't result in a very smart or fun AI. Tay was supposed to be fun because of its intelligence. Throwing a braindead solution intended for dumb forum software would run counter to the project's goals in my opinion.
levemi··on Poor Software QA Is Root Cause of TAY-Fail (Microsoft's AI Twitter Bot)
That's not as easy as it seems. See:

and

levemi··on Poor Software QA Is Root Cause of TAY-Fail (Microsoft's AI Twitter Bot)
Some of the tweets people highlighted weren't repeat after me at all. The article mentioned one, but there was a lot like that where Tay seemed to have learned to speak positively about very bad things. Had it been just repeat after me, all Microsoft had to do would be delete the offensive tweets made by Tay and then turn off that feature. There was more going on.
levemi··on Show HN: Better code review for GitHub
protip: make your free option a bit of text with a link instead of highlighting it on an equal basis with your paid plan. People who want a free option will find it while people who are willing to pay you $50 wont think about the free option as much. Also those red buttons are very angry looking. Maybe make them green instead. I don't like clicking red buttons, red buttons usually do dangerous things like delete accounts and launch stuff in production. Green buttons are click magnets on the other hand.

It looks like a really nice tool though.

Good luck!

levemi··on Do We Still Need Prisons?
You didn't at all offend me, I was just making a counter-argument. I also am not well informed on these things.
levemi··on Do We Still Need Prisons?
White collar crime can be so much worse than violent crimes. If some desperate person punches you in the face that should be punished, but someone who destroys the lives of so many by engaging in fraud in the financial sector leading to billions in public money spent to bail out companies, lives destroyed has done far worse than punch a single person in the face.
levemi··on Do We Still Need Prisons?
You don't think someone like Madoff deserves the worst punishment we have available for current non-violent offenders? He destroyed thousands of lives, ruined their savings and their ability to retire. Many people will probably have a far worse quality end of life experience because of him. The opportunities for the children of his victims is much diminished. It was an incredibly damaging crime and he's in prison right now bragging about it still.

He's not ashamed of all the hurt he's caused.

You think someone like that shouldn't be in prison? Ok, well if you do I still disagree. That guy belongs where he is for the time he has to be there for.

levemi··on NPR decides it won’t promote its podcasts or NPR One on air
We're still stuck in that in-between zone where legacy businesses from the last century are in the fight for their lives while everyone with half a sense can see the future is digital distribution.

This struggle is a generational one. Older people are used to their TVs, radios and newspapers and seem as a group unwilling to transition. Institutions on the wrong side of this fight like cable companies and cable TV stations, radio stations, movie theaters, local news TV networks and local newspapers haven't made it easy for them. Younger people on the other hand don't even bother.

And that's how you can see the writing on the wall for these obviously legacy businesses. By being unwilling to fully commit to the future, because they'll make less money, they'll upset existing relationships, they'll die. Blockbuster died a quick death. The transition from video rentals to online video was sudden and quick, because Blockbuster didn't control the content and couldn't lock in viewers. This kind of end will come for all these other places too though as younger generations have different expectations. They want their content on demand, and they want it on any of their devices and they want it without having to subscribe to expensive bundles of junk they'll never consume.

The problem for how to provide the same high quality local content that these legacy businesses can sometimes provide is a real problem that hasn't been addressed yet. AOL's patch was a very innovative and high quality way but it lacked adoption and was unsuccessful. I think we may have to see the old guards die and endure a short period without high quality local content before it can rise again.

levemi··on $99 Mineserver: The Devil Is in the Details
What's in the article sounds like way more than that and it's really the whole tone of the article that bugs me. Yes Mojang doesn't have to let you use its IP to help you market your thing. Yes Mojang can dictate the terms of their product, and no you don't get special treatment because you know people at Microsoft or have a widely read blog. Like really? The article is dripping with petulant self-entitlement. It's disgusting and I say that as someone who usually likes the author.
levemi··on $99 Mineserver: The Devil Is in the Details
Mincraft is not open source. There's way too much entitlement in this post. "How dare you make it hard for me to not profit off of your success."

It's very clear in the terms of service that you cannot make money from Minecraft mods and that only Mojang is allowed to make money from the game. It has always been this way. It's been in the press many times and anyone wanting to make money from Minecraft should know this. Making money from the success of someone else's project should always involve a bit of research.

The ways that people have made money from Minecraft is by providing hosting and by streaming themselves playing Minecraft and making let's play videos. Another way is to host your Minecraft mod on adfly and make ad money from the downloads page. That's pretty much it.

They should have known this beforehand. I knew it and I don't make mods for Minecraft.

levemi··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
Thanks dang!
levemi··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
It's not even that great of an article, and yet it's the top post on HN? I hope at least dang looks at the data. I'm sorry it's pretty suspicious. Like what is so notable about this post that it warrants being at the top? Above the living social layoffs and the various other way more interesting things on the front page right now.

Worst case, it turns out being a legit article, in which case it's cool. Eh, no big deal.

levemi··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
Eh, the number of downvotes I'm seeing for a contrary opinion to article about something not really controversial is also pretty weird. Seems like evidence of a concerted promotional push on HN to be honest, if only anecdotally.
levemi··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
Where I work, not even a very large startup, we spend a lot of venture money on a PR firm. It's pretty common for a PR firm to push content to journalists and blog writers and really it works nicely most of the time. It bugs me in this case though if it is a PR fluff piece.
levemi··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
Doesn't matter, article should mention IRC given the breadth of the introduction, especially when talking about chat from an open source perspective.
levemi··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
Doesn't mention IRC, doesn't mention Discord. I'm suspicious that a PR firm pushed this to a journalist.
