lessnonymous··on Petition: require free access to publicly-funded research
It's a lot easier to say 'no' than 'yes'. We want a 'yes' on this one, so I'm happy for them to work out how they can rather than knee-jerk 'no'.
lessnonymous··on I want the world to scroll this way
Oh .. is that the problem? No, opened it in chrome, still an annoying turn-the-page interface. No idea what everyone is talking about. Maybe you need a scroll wheel on your mouse?

I have ABSOLUTELY no problem tracking scrolling text as I read it. I think pagination is of the devil. We could have paginated the web in '93, but the beauty of the web is pages can be endless.

lessnonymous··on End Daylight Savings
So now you have 1 piece of general data (4pm is an OK time to go shopping) and one piece of specific data (not in Spain).

With a global UTC system, you have to remember that in Spain you can shop from 1100 - 1700, but in Melbourne you can shop from 1900 - 0700. In New York you can shop from 0800 - 1600.

Every single place will have it's own data you have to remember, not one piece of general information plus a few specific pieces.

lessnonymous··on Why Are Lego Sets Expensive?
The nerd in me read this hours ago. When I got home I had to do some data mining of the Lego site and put the numbers together.

Average Brick Price

    Australia:18.3c
    UK: 14.9c
    USA: 10.8c
So yes, the price is almost double in Australia what it is in the US.

Average Licenced Brick Price

    Australia: 22.0c
    UK: 17.5c
    US: 11.5c
If the link works, you can see all my numbers on my Facebook page: http://rick.ph/lego_price_analysis

lessnonymous··on Trello celebrates One Million Users
But that's not the issue. The problem is the inability to switch between identities without logging out and back in. Which is significantly harder on iOS than the desktop.

Not really a surprise. I'm having the same problem with a pile of services. The only thing I'm using that lets me switch easily is Gmail.

There was a post on here a month or so ago about a guy who lost his personal drop box because they do a bad job of understanding people have multiple personas.

lessnonymous··on Ad Blocking Raises Alarm Among Firms Like Google
Doesn't ISPs making a decision between two different pieces of traffic fall under Net Neutrality?

Just because people don't generally like the ads, Free is deciding which content gets through its system. If it's going to do this, then why can't it decide not to allow particular news through because 'the news provider should pay for the bandwidth'?

lessnonymous··on Reddit Rumored To Be Raising Money, At A $400 Million Valuation
I hate this sort of joke. It reinforces the behavior for people who don't see it as a joke. And there's a lot of them.

"Oh, it's OK and funny to call people faggots"

I wish regular Redditors would stamp this shit out.

No, I'm not being unnecessarily precious or PC. I used to laugh at distasteful misogynistic jokes (and worse) but somebody pointed out to me that joking about it normalizes it. And to the depraved part of society the joke is missed and they see it as support for their depravity.

lessnonymous··on Why do microwaves all have different controls?
Which is why I didn't designate them as 600W, but just '600'. It's a standard which means your food will get hit with the equivalent of half the energy of your 1200W microwave. (Which, in most cases, is 50% on + 50% off. Which my current microwave calls "Medium" maybe?)
lessnonymous··on Why do microwaves all have different controls?
While we're talking about Microwave UX .. what is "High, Medium, Low"?? My current microwave is 1200W. My first was 800W.

A 1200W microwave should have settings 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 and an 800W microwave would be missing the 100W and 1200W settings.

That way, my mac-n-cheese would say "Cook on 1000W for 5 minutes" and it would work on EVERY microwave.

lessnonymous··on Show HN: How I turned an old book into a (barely) profitable website
This can be a really useful website that could potentially earn you _interesting_ money.

I'd take your first few $15 and reinvest it by getting someone on oDesk to go through and fix stuff.

* First section I looked at was 'Brakes'. First article is about the windscreen washer. Then there's two articles called "Adjusting the Brakes /1" and "... /2". Why two?

* In the first there's one massive unreadable paragraph. In the second there's paragraph-length titles.

* I'd also look at getting your oDeskers to put the images in interesting places within the text.

At the moment it feels like an OCR dump of a book rather than the amazingly useful website it could be (and thus it feels like an SEO AdSense site).

lessnonymous··on What happens when you are the doctor on the airplane?
iPhone? Hit the 'Reader' button in the URL bar. Anything else? Get the Readability or 'Instapaper Text' bookmarklet installed.

Then quit posting your personal problems here.

lessnonymous··on Expedia: Bad for the Traveler, Bad for the Hotel
The price advertised at a hotel is called the "Rack Rate". Never pay that. Phone the hotel and get a real price from them. It's a weird system, but you'll get the same price as an OTA is offering. Often less, if you ask and quote the OTA price.
lessnonymous··on Expedia: Bad for the Traveler, Bad for the Hotel
This is weasel words:

> Also, it is often in the contract between the hotel and the OTA that the hotel will always advertise the lowest rate available through that OTA. ... If you contact the hotel and ask for a room directly, and they offer you a lower rate, there is a chance that they are in breach of contract.

You're scare mongering. A hotel can charge a customer anything they like. They can give them the room for free. Your contract with them MIGHT preclude them ADVERTISING a lower rate, but it doesn't preclude them offering a lower rate when asked for a room directly. Even if it did, the only remedy I can imagine would be ending the contract.

When I want a room today or tomorrow, I find the best rates I can via OTAs, then phone the hotel and ask for the manager. I then ask for and GET a cheaper rate because they don't have to take the 25% OTA hit.

Until the web is flooded with "would you believe the extra value this OTA provided?" I'll continue to avoid them.

lessnonymous··on Windows 8 Sales Disappoint in Shaky PC Market
When I bought my new laptop, the store was 95% Window 8. And ZERO had a touch screen. I don't get why laptops don't come with a touch screen by default these days.
lessnonymous··on Windows 8 Sales Disappoint in Shaky PC Market
I bought Start8 for about $5. Works brilliantly. It also disables most of the full-screening crap Windows 8 tries to shove down your throat.

I understand full screen on a tablet, but on a 27" monitor with no 'touch'? WTF?

lessnonymous··on JetBrains Doomsday Sale - 75% off for 24 hours only
I've really gotten into Sublime after being 100% text-editor for perl, HTML, javascript and PHP for years and years.

Can anyone tell me why I should switch to this IDE?

What am I missing out on? Many of the 'smarts' seem dependent on writing code in a particular way (eg, using PHPdoc) or following their file naming conventions.

I'm eager to try anything that's better. But I'm not getting it.

lessnonymous··on Things Bosses Wish They Could Tell Employees
DON'T EVER tell your boss you're compelled to dip your feet in the water.

1. If you ask us for a payrise, we have to weigh the cost of the payrise vs the risk you WILL leave to get one somewhere else. We KNOW that if we turn you down, there's a chance you're going to be looking elsewhere.

2. By telling us you're dipping your foot, you've essentially given your notice. You just haven't told us when you're leaving. As of right now, you're not going to get the same level of attention and I'm looking for your replacement.

2b. If you don't tell us you're dipping your foot in the water, but we can't give you a pay rise, you'll get more attention and you'll get anything else we can possibly give you. We might give you a nicer desk, or replace your PC before anyone else's, or take you out for coffee more often.

lessnonymous··on Things Bosses Wish They Could Tell Employees
Articulation.

This article picks a bunch of things and puts good words around them. I just had a conversation with one of my employees that touched on a pile of these issues so I sent him this article as a better way of articulating how important he is to me.

lessnonymous··on Facebook's legal team bans developer of F.B. Purity from Facebook
As someone who's done a lot of data mining, I'm always surprised to find that sites with lots of data don't do this. Your output generator just needs to randomize some class names and throw a couple of pointless elements around the place to make it MUCH more difficult.

There's one site I've scraped that has code like this: <div class="name"><span class="first_name">...</span> <span class="last_name">...</span></div><div class="street_address">...</div>

lessnonymous··on Show HN: Teelaunch Prints & Ships Your Kickstarter & Indiegogo T-Shirt Rewards
Nice opportunity spotted! You've simplified the crap out of an annoying part of the crowdsourcing reward system.

From what I can make out, you're either in the screen printing industry and spotted a great opportunity to move product, or you're a HN sort of entrepreneur who saw the opportunity and found a partner with the experience.

Either way, this is a brilliant move.

lessnonymous··on Lorem Pixel
On top of the obvious (resize to largest dimension, crop smallest) I'm guessing they set an anchor point on the image rather than use the center.

For example, the pig's face isn't centered. So rather than returning the center of the image, they crop the sides proportionally to the anchor point on the pig's face.

Edit: Nup. They just crop it down the middle. If you're the developer feel free to steal the above.

But you might put an island where there isn't one .. Google has. The difference is that Google appear to have quickly acted to remove the island when it became public knowledge that it didn't exist.

lessnonymous··on Editable for Bootstrap
If you don't want forms, use inputs with no border or background except when :active.

Why does a regular form not work for a profile?

Salesforce.com does a reasonable job of inline editing as they turn ALL fields on the form editable. So the annoyance of not being able to select text to type over it only happens once.

lessnonymous··on Editable for Bootstrap
This breaks usability like crazy. You have to click on something to edit it, then you have to select the content.

I'm sure there's some place where this might be useful (madlibs?) but it's not a usable replacement for a good form.
