lesinski··on Amazon still hasn’t fixed its problem with bait-and-switch reviews
Here’s why Wirecutter can make an entire business out of credibly reviewing products
lesinski··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Part of the point of the Montessori method is that there aren't instructions. If you played with these items for hours (like a child) you would start to understand the fundamentals of addition, multiplication and even calculus without deliberately trying.
lesinski··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
During transcription, Siri frequently thinks that "exclamation point" -- the common punctuation -- is me trying to add the phrase "excavation point," a phrase nobody ever says.
lesinski··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
Netflix has reshaped the whole industry for the better. Netflix by itself at $13 per month is nearly as much content as you'd get in a small cable package in the "old days of TV." Of course, in the future, if you actually tried to watch everything available, you'd be paying for some crazy mega-bundle like the old cable days. Otherwise, things are clearly better as Netflix runs away with streaming and forces the other media companies to compete.
lesinski··on Verizon to Sell Tumblr to Automattic
Facebook bought Instagram for $1B. About a year later, Yahoo bought Tumblr for $1.1B.
lesinski··on Even fine restaurants serve coffee made with capsules
In order to pack coffee into air-tight pods like Nespresso does, the coffee must first completely degas and become stale. What fine restaurant would serve a stale dish? Regardless of consistency, taste, automation, etc?
lesinski··on Show HN: The Physical, Manufactured Party Game I Made In Only 12 Weeks
Bingo!
lesinski··on Show HN: The Physical, Manufactured Party Game I Made In Only 12 Weeks
OP here. Thanks for the analogy!

To answer your PS: 1) rapidly playtesting over email and remotely with folks I'd never met 2) finding a supplier who could do the whole game quickly in the US -- though I had to pay a premium for that and make some sacrifices 3) having a plan and re-prioritizing it practically daily

(sorry for the delay here-- my darn noprocrast settings locked me out!)

lesinski··on From Zero To Kickstarter In $5k
Ha! Great point.

One perspective might be that you'll get more bang out of your Kickstarter if you show the backers that you've done some work first. I'm more likely to contribute when I see prototypes than vague ideas.

lesinski··on From Zero To Kickstarter In $5k
Hm... I like that tactic because Apple probably tested tablet sizes like crazy, so they can expect their size to be comfortable. Why does it matter what people will be carrying it with and how many of their notebook-loving customers really have iPad minis?
lesinski··on How Company Culture Demotivates People
Woah now... How about trying to communicate with senior management to change these things first?
lesinski··on Show HN: Mummify – Preserve web content, fight link rot
How is Mummify going to get around the copyright implications of ripping off the now removed piece of content which they don't own?

Also wondering: what happens if the publisher redirects the old URL to a new place -- maybe an "update"... or maybe a useless hub page?

lesinski··on The one HR benefit every startup should add
It baffles me how few people have disability insurance. What would you do if injured your hands and could never type again? What would your family do? Everyone should have disability insurance -- it should be a fundamental part of your financial life.
lesinski··on The Way to Produce a Person
Does anyone know if there's science to back this up?

The brain is a malleable organ. Every time you do an activity, or have a thought, you are changing a piece of yourself into something slightly different than it was before. Every hour you spend with others, you become more like the people around you. Gradually, you become a different person... You will become more hedge fund, less malaria.

I've read studies that show the more you expose yourself to a song or a person, the more you'll like it/him, even if you started off hating it/him. But that doesn't mean you become more like the person.

lesinski··on My product failed
Totally agree with you -- this guy needs to COLD CALL!
lesinski··on Show HN: Dynamic Cards Against Humanity cards based on Facebook data
Bravo to the team who put this together.
lesinski··on Stop externalising your life
This is an outrageously superficial analysis of sharing... It's natural to want to share experiences. This is what we do socially every time someone at work asks "how are you?" or when a friend comes over for a beer. Calling it "robotic" is a huge generalization.
lesinski··on Check you're wearing trousers first
If you're just a dude or a small start-up then sure, avoid analysis paralysis. But if you work at a bigger company, you have to test and bring in data to make changes -- otherwise, your stuff will lose out to other priorities.
lesinski··on Google killed me
I wonder if this would suit the criterion for defamation. That would be a really interesting case to see.
lesinski··on Show HN: Launch your own hosted SelfStarter without writing a line of code
I don't know a ton about crowdfunding... but what could be the downside of using Kickstarter? Seems to me that it comes with free audience and offers some security for the backers.
lesinski··on Introducing Graph Search
Actually, that's what's great about Facebook: they probably already know who those 10-50 friends are based on your activity on the site, your location, your photos.

They know your best friends based on your actions versus who you might list if they asked you who your best friends are -- which might be a more accurate way of figuring it out anyway.
