lentil_soup··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
This is a great point! And not only a compiler behind a subscription, it's also a compiler whose financial interests are not aligned to be the best compiler but the one that makes the most money, which is unclear what it means at this moment. Will it have ads? Will it give preference to some technology over another? Will it steal your code? It's an unreliable and opaque compiler!

> Nothing critical is lost if a video game team stops working. Society doesnt need it and there are lots of alternatives.

A union represents workers in a company, nothing to do with society. If workers strike the company stops making money, that's their leverage

lentil_soup··on Moleskine's AI Lord of the Rings collection can only mock
potentially, you're right, anecdotally many artists I've known and worked with have always liked and sought those notebooks
lentil_soup··on Moleskine's AI Lord of the Rings collection can only mock
I think a lot of people are misunderstanding this.

This is not some random tie-in to the LOTR franchise. Moleskine used to be one of the main notebooks for artists for a long time, and as the article mentions some of their notebooks have featured artists in their cover, their manifesto is all about "timeless power of handwriting" and "put pen to paper, and unleash your unique voice", etc. Having a company with that reputation and those connections to the art world just go with some AI slop for this collaboration is a slap to the face to its own users for potentially selling some notebooks to unsuspecting LOTR fans.

It's the enshittification of a brand once loved by artists.

> The market will definitely make the decision here

I don't understand this, the market is not a divine entity, you can choose to be passive about it and let others decide, but there's nothing wrong with people pushing "the market" towards what they see is right. Big corporations do it already so it's perfectly fine for people to call attention on this, campaign against it, etc ... which is what this article is doing

lentil_soup··on Spain to expand internet blocks to tennis, golf, movies broadcasting times
OP literally advocated for having a single culture.

And you missed the part I said about how different human concepts don't exist in all languages, do we just not have those? Language is an integral part of different cultures, not the only one, but a pretty big one. Can't believe I'm having to defend this.

lentil_soup··on Spain to expand internet blocks to tennis, golf, movies broadcasting times
What a sad world where we all have the same culture and language. There's many concepts that don't translate from one language to the next, they form a way of looking at the world. What about foods, and stories and music, nah, sounds terrible.

I also want one big world for all but definitely not a single culture or language

lentil_soup··on Tell HN: docker pull fails in spain due to football cloudflare block
how do you make claims, here: https://usuariosteleco.digital.gob.es/? Can't find a way of doing it with Cl@ve
lentil_soup··on Tell HN: Docker pull fails in Spain due to football Cloudflare block
> Cloudflare would rather not block websites without a court order specifying the sites to be blocked.

why would they?

> squabble between two huge corporations

I think this is just LaLiga using it's cultural and economical power, don't think Cloudflare or the courts should be making exceptions just so they can control how people watch football

lentil_soup··on Tell HN: Docker pull fails in Spain due to football Cloudflare block
ok, then what do you suggest? we don't get involved and decisions at the government level are made for us? I might be naive, but let's not be restrained by the cynicism of any involment in politics and governance is corruption
lentil_soup··on Tell HN: Docker pull fails in Spain due to football Cloudflare block
not necesarilly, any government will make decisions, if there's no one to speak up and inform them why the decision is stupid, like the one from LaLiga, then we end up in this situation
lentil_soup··on Tell HN: Docker pull fails in Spain due to football Cloudflare block
to stop people pirating football streams while matches are on. Insanity

Come on, you know what they mean. They're authoritarian populist leaders with a disregard for the rule of law. Cruel men that rejoice in the "destruction" of their political enemies both figuratively and literally. Men with little emotional control that suffer from severe anxiety at anything that doesn't fit their very narrow view of the world.

lentil_soup··on Artemis II Launch Day Updates
why pick on space exploration which has such a small budget and provides with a lot of hard science, technology, boosts the economy, etc and not pick on many other things we do that make no sense? why not pick on the military? or fossil fuel subsidies? or the entertainment/sports industry? or ads? why not pick on bureaucracy or war or billionaires? ... all of those have way bigger budgets and ain't fixing any "existential threats", arguably making them worse

It's so easy to pick on the few remaining industries and science that invest on a future that is not the next quarter and doesn't just make the same people richer. Make no mistake, the little money spent on space exploration (or science in general) is not what's causing or keeping us from solving existential threats.

> "OSS but not for megacorps/aicorps" is just proprietary software

why? it's not like it's binary. It could well be that it's open source but can't be used by a company of X size. I'm not a lawyer but why couldn't a license have that clause? I would still class that as being open, for some definition of open

lentil_soup··on Epic Games to cut more than 1k jobs as Fortnite usage falls
> downturn of their product line

a product line that is still expected to make $6B this year plus a bunch of other massive IPs. Come on, if he can't keep the team together with that budget then he should step aside and let someone in charge who can.

lentil_soup··on Epic Games to cut more than 1k jobs as Fortnite usage falls
I also don't understand, this is just a failure from Tim Sweeney being blamed on external factors. With that amount of money and the IPs they own he should have been able to keep the company going but didn't.
lentil_soup··on Have a fucking website
I miss Geocities so much. It was so simple, open an account, drag some files and done you have a website. What happened? Why is it so hard to have a static website now?
lentil_soup··on The 49MB web page
no, you offer a technical solution to the problem. Show some videos is the problem. Downloading almost a GB of video content on page load is the (bad) technical solution. There are better ways and as a developer it's part of your job to solve things in a way that makes sense.
lentil_soup··on Libre Solar – Open Hardware for Renewable Energy
chill, I'm not offended, just thought it was worth mentioning it sounds bad to native speakers. Wouldn't you mention it if someone was misusing a Dutch word?

Also, it comes from French and Spanish [https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html], it's the same word and same grammar, subject before adjective.

lentil_soup··on Libre Solar – Open Hardware for Renewable Energy
A meta comment and really don't want to distract from the product but as a Spanish speaker, the word "libre" for open source projects really grids my gears. It's specially bad when used with "libre" before the subject (like LibreOffice or Libre Solar). It sounds a bit like Brad Pitt saying "bonjourno" in Inglourious Basterds.

Libre does mean free as in freedom, but it also means available and released from prison.

lentil_soup··on Cyberattack in Venezuela demonstrated precision of U.S. capabilities
>> But Maduro isn't exactly Mohammed bin Salman or Donald Rumsfeld.

Just showed you an article describing all the human right abuses, tortures and forced disappearances done under the Maduro regime and this is your take away? I can only assume you're not arguing in good faith.

Check the news right now, about the prisoner releases happening as we speak and the hundreds still to go. One died only last week in captivity. Guess we can tell their families at least Maduro is not bin Salaman. Such cruelty, man

lentil_soup··on Cyberattack in Venezuela demonstrated precision of U.S. capabilities
The scandal is that the energy crisis was declared in 2009, and 17 years later, after investing $100 billion of which up to $80 billion disappeared, there are still blackouts across the country. That's all in the first article. The Derwick one is not just one reporter either, there's local and international reporters involved including claims from Reporters Without Borders where reporters received "threats, pressures, bribe offers". That's also in the article.

As for the attrocities I meant the Maduro (and current) government in general. There are currently over 1000 political prisoners in the country, a mix of protesters, politicians, reporters, etc. A lot of them have been tortured and many have died in custody. Most of the sources from NGO are in Spanish but the Wikipedia is a good start, specially the section about the Maduro government [1]

If you check the news right now you'll see that only in the past month about 50 have been released. There's a huge effort in the country right now to get the hundreds of others out.

Ultimately, what I want to say is that while we can express disdain for the US government we can do the same for the Venezuelan one, even if they claim to be against each other. Maduro and his gang are not the victims here, they've oppressed the Venezuelan people for 27 years, let's not give them an easy out

lentil_soup··on Cyberattack in Venezuela demonstrated precision of U.S. capabilities
It also fits squarely with corruption in Venezuela, specially regarding energy. Venezuela has been rationing electricity across the country since 2009 and has been involved in countless corruption scandals involving Odebrecht, PDVSA, Derwick Associates.

I understand the US's foreign policy is a global threat, but let's not let that be an excuse for the atrocities and corruption of tyrants in Venezuela and other places.

lentil_soup··on Cyberattack in Venezuela demonstrated precision of U.S. capabilities
Let's not take Maduro at his word, he's great at playing the victim to hide their corruption. Venezuela has been in an energy crisis since 2009 with rationing still happening everywhere in the country except in Caracas [1] big part of it from the Odebrecht corruption scandal [2]

lentil_soup··on Wind power slashed 4.6B euros off electricity bills in Spain last year
It's fascinating to see the live electricity sources with Electricity Maps.

Here is Spain: https://app.electricitymaps.com/map/zone/ES/

Throughout the day you can clearly see how the wind and sun power starts kicking in, when it's raining hydro raises, etc.

lentil_soup··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Irrelevant, Chavez died 13 years ago, a lot has happened and changed. Maduro lost the last election hard, he wrecked the support he inherited back then
