lehmannro··on Amazon Apologizes For 'Embarrassing And Ham-Fisted' Gay Book Blacklist
Half a dozen clicks from his HN profile and you're there: http://twitter.com/offbytwo/friends
lehmannro··on Is time an illusion?
What you describe sounds like all particles in the universe suddenly lost all their energy. If time is change, time must be energy.
lehmannro··on The most effective debt collecting email I ever wrote
That reminds me of the following statement: (I'm probably paraphrasing here -- my Google-fu failed me)

Your arguments can be driven by your emotions but your emotions cannot be your arguments.

lehmannro··on The Chandler Project (personal information organizer)
As far as I know they're already working on Chandler v2.0 as a total revamp of Chandler 1.0. http://people.osafoundation.org/~jeffrey/rearch_documentatio...
lehmannro··on Ask HN: Goal Setting Software
In order to break down tasks into next smallest steps Chandler might come in handy. http://chandlerproject.org/

No matter what your collections will just keep growing (if you do not delete items but rather mark them DONE) so that could be a little demotivating.

lehmannro··on A little secret that will make the world fall apart
I always thought our current problem is not really producing energy but rather transporting it? So if you have a reactor in New York City it'll be rather useless for the people in, say, Moscow. That's the reason nobody is doing this power the world by establishing solar power plants in the Sahara project. Could someone clear this up?

lehmannro··on Snakebite: the open source development network
Even though the announcement (see my other post) and the page pretty concisely describe what Snakebite's about, I'll try to wrap it up:

It's a platform for open source developers granting access to exotic build environments. A communist server farm of buildbots, so to say. It aims for more cross-platform compatibility.

Snakebite will be publicly announced… soon. whoops.

lehmannro··on Ask HN: What are some (good) hacker movies?
First off I have to admit that I actually like Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions.

I appreciate those two essays and highly enjoyed reading them. But when interpreting such works I'm always cautious not to read too much into small details. I found the overview about philosophy refreshing but when the author begins to claim the movie got it wrong in some place but insists on some special philosophical trait I become suspicious.

lehmannro··on The History of Python
While the semicolon is only a convenience it has some common use cases. For example shoot-and-forget invokations of third party modules:

  import sys; sys.exit()
  import pdb; pdb.set_trace()
  import cgitb; cgitb.enable()
  import psyco; psyco.full()
  import pygtk; pygtk.require('2.0')
And of course it's pretty useful in environments where one-liner are easier to handle:

  $ python -c "import mymod; mymod.test()"

lehmannro··on Post a possibly good app idea that you have no intention of doing yourself.
http://ping.fm/ is not there yet but you two are heading into the same direction I think.

lehmannro··on Work on what you use and share the rest
we should all be working on the things that we personally use and care about.

That way just about every application will end up supporting email (paraphrasing Jamie Zawinski's Law of Software Envelopment).

lehmannro··on Ask HN: Where does consciousness come from?
You all could be perfectly designed robots that are tricking me into believing you're also humans who experience consciousness.

If you rebuilt humans with whatever technology (we might use transistors, nature used neurons), how would they be different from real humans then? Why would you call the robot a trickster while saying you are no doubt conscious?

lehmannro··on Advice to programmers: Get a government job
So if politics and democracy are the same what's your position towards them? Should we refuse democracy or just stop complaining about politics?
lehmannro··on A no-fly zone to protect Linux from patent trolls
Just for future reference the actual address is http://legalpad.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/12/08/a-no-fly-zo...
lehmannro··on Beware the church of climate alarm
Okay, I'll bite: people think that the temperature as it is today is the best one for the people. It's not playing God -- it's just maintaining our race. Granted, at the disadvantage of other races but that's just how nature works, isn't it?

"Looking after yourself means everyone is looked after." Now beat me.

lehmannro··on Ask HN: Do social sites with karma need a decay function?
But then again karma is no indicator for intellect or sanity, is it?
lehmannro··on GitX: Git GUI for OS X
I don't know if the versioned filesystem metaphor fits Subversion that well -- clients do not store history after all. It is usually what Git evangelists praise about their software; you can use Git as a simple versioned file system if you wish (git add/commit/log and you're all set).
lehmannro··on Science's Alternative to an Intelligent Creator: the Multiverse Theory
Back in the day "atoms" were meant to be indivisible as well. It's just relics of our language not keeping up with science.
lehmannro··on Why America Will Remain the Superpower
> you can't even manage to provide reasonable capacity in Afghanistan.

Am I misunderstanding you or are you really arguing that one should expect the EU to clean up after the US?

Apart from that the EU is actually doing things in Afghanistan as far as I know -- but more like the friendly-negotiative style, not the world's cop style.

lehmannro··on RIP Twitter
You can refuse to read messages in any medium after all.

For SMS, though, the reader (often a mobile phone device) has to read the message the moment it arrives (or it, well, won't arrive). Since tweets are not limited to one person, reading Twitter can happen asynchronously.

lehmannro··on Poll: How many hours of sleep do you get each day?
And indeed the average sleep cycle is about 1.5 hours long. See http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/naps/

Personally I like to get up early (around 6am), go to bed when done for the day and nap when tired.

lehmannro··on One Inviolable Rule
Depending on your standards, you can justify absolutely anything. There is nothing that is inherently right or wrong -- perhaps something that is right or wrong in most views.

Our standards have changed, too -- not even a century ago, holocausts were considered absolutely appropriate (even by scientists!).

lehmannro··on One Inviolable Rule
How come you think that?

I cannot see any biological advantage of not eating your children in emergency situations -- i.e. where you need to eat the child (survival, extortion, ...) and she won't survive anyways.

lehmannro··on /dev/afj08 - Store your April Fools URLs here
The Python community celebrated April Fools' Day, too (even though they were rather easy to figure out, I liked them for their creativity):

"Trying to get PyPy to run on Python 3.0" <http://morepypy.blogspot.com/2008/04/trying-to-get-pypy-to-r...; If you followed PyPy's politics in the last few months, the headline's already yelling "APRIL FOOL" at you. I liked the "Automatic Program Reversion on Intermediate Languages" (APRIL). ;-)

"psychotic -- Pure Python code optimizer" <http://code.google.com/p/psychotic/>; The source is definitively worth a view.
