You cannot bring cherries into california from almost all USA states (except AZ, NV, CO, and WY). I experienced this personally. The state border crossing took cherries from us while we crossed from Oregon, less than 3 months ago, and dumped the cherries in trash.

This is not limited to businesses, and is not a pandemic measure. This has been a long standing policy, meant to protect california's agriculture. Oh, the free trade exponent country has protectionism practiced by its states.

The fact that you are getting downvoted tells me a lot. Censorship is going to never be fine, even if they pinky swear it will be used only on nazis.
legolas2412··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
I don't either. You'll have to get a better sample representing bengali villages and older people to conclude that casteism is dead.
legolas2412··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
Fair enough. I read that post again, and it clearly is indefensible. I was trying to address a different point.

Just to add context, mallu is a term for malayali people, who live in kerela state for india. It is used insultingly as an ethnic slur.

So, she is kinda right. It is not casteist, but a word used in a derogative way for a certain ethnic group.

legolas2412··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
This is pretty wrong. Caste reservation are not about economic inequality, but social representation. They are kinda like reparations. If they were just about economic inequality, you would just have free jee coaching, not caste based reservation.
legolas2412··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
Are you Indian american? Because generally people know what surnames fall in whatever caste. People, mostly of our parents generation, know and remember thousands of surnames and associated caste.
legolas2412··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
Aren't those merit-cum-means scholarships actually have a caste-based criterion? In that case they are just being transparent, and claiming it to be casteist is ridiculous.

You might as well say that reservations revealed caste by showing people got through reservation quota, hence there is caste discrimination, hence more reservation is required.

> Systemic oppression is not erased by hard and honest work of the descendants of oppressors, it must be actively fixed.

But it looks like these measures do not solve where the systemic oppression exists. Systemic oppression exists mostly in wealth inequalities, and somewhat in society that restricts access to education for those who are oppressed. Given that is the problem, the solution should be to provide high quality universal primary and secondary education. Taking number of STEM engineers by race/caste and trying to force universities to discriminate in admissions does not solve the poor quality of public school education

> It is common for affirmative action students to not do very well there. Do you have any data at all for this?

You can find one study here https://www.epw.in/engage/article/Survey-at-an-IIT-Campus-Sh....

General category has a higher percentage of attended govt school and less private school than SC/ST. Interesting to see that is not true for OBC.

legolas2412··on Spotify reportedly fighting with employees about hosting episodes of Joe Rogan
I guess the point is that a person should not be discriminated based on things they don't control, like race, sex, gender etc.

But the trend being described here is exactly that. Affirmative action, curtailment of free speech etc. Even many diversity initiatives.

It doesn't matter if it discriminates positively, contrary to society's past regressive discrimination. This positive discrimination goes against liberal principles.

legolas2412··on Spotify reportedly fighting with employees about hosting episodes of Joe Rogan
I'm not very keen on calling that "liberal". For one, it goes against the very definition of liberalism, which covers equality and liberty. No individual should be judged based on factors they don't control. A liberal would not oppose free speech.

But the main reason I disagree with this "liberal trend", which I'd call "leftist trend", is that I disagree with them and identify as a liberal.

legolas2412··on Going to elite Indian colleges improves earnings, but not test scores
There is a competitive bar to getting an MIT education. And that is a good thing, because it encourages competition and excellence.

It is not a competitive bar to education, but a difference of great and not so great universities, which are going to choose students from great and not so great candidates.

legolas2412··on Going to elite Indian colleges improves earnings, but not test scores
The point is to replace this objective transparent measure with a subjective opaque measure. Like alumni interviews, and ranking based on personality. That way they can twist the results a preferred way
legolas2412··on Going to elite Indian colleges improves earnings, but not test scores
I'll consider your point valid if oxford and cambridge also did the lottery. Otherwise, if the elite universities, which are likely to have a lot of good candidates, won't do a lottery, maybe there is some merit in choosing people by merit.
legolas2412··on Going to elite Indian colleges improves earnings, but not test scores
> This is why applaud California's recent decision to halt standardized tests, such as SAT and ACT, as a mandatory placement criteria for entering university. All those tests measure, given the youth and maturity of traditional high school students, is extreme preparation and not performance or potential.

Unless you think that universities should pick their students by lotteries, you must answer how whatever that replaces SAT is not worse. Because whatever replaces it, for example identifying well rounded candidates with extra curricular achievements is even more socio-economic stratifying.

It largely feels like an excuse to lower the competitive bar to manage the demographics, allowing both more legacy hires and more representative demographics. Such actions however will come at the cost of merit.

legolas2412··on Alberta government gives green light to Calgary-Edmonton Hyperloop project
boring company is not building hyperloop. The urban loop or the boring company loops are just small tunnels. Nor is spacex building anything, but a small tunnel to do pod design competitions.

Many things are wrong with the hyperloop or loop proposals. The first is that they are unproven and wildly off cost estimate. Elon musk waived off hyperloop costs by declaring that they can be built along pylons on existing highways. But that's absurd, as existing highways are built to the standard of 70-80 mph, and for the proposed speeds of 400-500 mph, the curvatures of the road, and the twists and the turns are completely different. Hence, land acquisition costs do not go away. The same thing applies to boring company's loop. If you are going to zip at 150mph, the curvatures are steep, and any common tunnel will slow it down.

I watched a few videos doing a more thorough analysis. If you're interested, I'll try to find and share them.

legolas2412··on Feds say Yale discriminates against Asian, white applicants
Does anybody know how to downvote/flag in hackernews?
legolas2412··on Feds say Yale discriminates against Asian, white applicants
The first one is indeed true. But i hope even acknowledging the theoretical possibility is not mistaken/admonished as racial supremacy and scientific inquiry gets hurt.

The second one, I don't think anybody says that there is no nurture component. Acknowledging theoretical possibility of a nature component via genetics is not saying that there is no nurture component, and that it does not confound any test. We would need to design better tests.

For third, that is just a definition issue. You're saying that it is wrong to investigate differences between races, but fine to do so for ethnicities. So, let us look if there are cognitive differences between different ethnicities?

Fourth is just downright false. Subgroups living in Africa are generally darker, taller, and better runners. Subgroups in east Asia generally shorter. None of the statements about physical characteristics or intelligence are about extremes or broad strict inequalities about all members. They are always statistical distributions over the whole population.

Fifth is the crux of the matter. Are we going to stop scientific inquiry because of that? Instead of trying to stop scientific inquiry, we should debate why our liberal values are useful and should hold even if there are genetic components that determine intelligence.

Why is it when you criticize religion then all religious apologists come along? It's even bi-partisan. Criticize Christianity and right wingers come with whataboutism and criticise Islam and left wingers are angry.

If I criticize Nazi white supremacy philosophy of formenting hatred, do you come with a similar excuse of how human tribal nature will find a different means for formenting conflict, or how the British empire was also racist.

Is my point of criticizing religion in any way related to your snark about the Trump administration?

legolas2412··on Montreal is taxing churches (2017)
Not OP but a fellow atheist. Let me provide my opinion.

You'll find racists and bigots in any group, but religions explicitly promote the supremacy and truth value of one over the other, and is a source of racism and bigotry. Unlike say, a board game club.

Are you really interested in debating the topic, or just perpetual muddying the waters?

The question is if Chinese ownership of Indian industries will be bad, and the answer is an obvious yes.

As for your claim in this case, it wasn't just a freshly deployed Chinese trooper, but the whole platoon, who had built structures and arranged weapons in violation of prior agreement.

legolas2412··on Google to Invest $10B in India
Umm, the Mughal, the Guptas? Also the pratiharas, rashtrakutas and palas collectively ruled over india too. The Delhi sultanate was pretty huge too, and so was the maratha empire.

But being a single governance group isn't the point. Being culturally similar is what defines India. And it obviously is.

legolas2412··on Google to Invest $10B in India
You're distracting from the point. It doesn't matter how strong the central government is or how divided the population is.

What we are discussing is foreign ownership and foreign power over India, and you just said that allowing EIC too much of these was a mistake

China, an authoritarian state can and does use its financial influence to force it's interests. Do you not see how Chinese vc answer to china and not india? If you think they can just be banned, what else do you think is the Indian government doing?

Ambani is still subject to Indian laws, and even if he leaves, his wealth and empire is answerable to the Indian government.

legolas2412··on Coronavirus: Dexamethasone proves first life-saving drug?
Sure, and a lot of misleading stuff is true.

Consider this imaginary scenario. Imagine a dead body is found in the street in front of your house. The dead person has multiple stab wounds, and there is a knife 20 feet away from the body.

Imagine you inform the police, but they come 2 hours later, and announce that they'll investigate the death. Then 2 days later they come and announce that they had no evidence that this was a murder. They also announced that staying in and locking your doors had shown to not stop serial killers and was counter productive.

Do you want such an investigative agency?

I would prefer if the police said something like this within 1 hours of arriving at the crime scene "the stab wound and a bloody knife indicate that this might be a murder. In order to stay safe, the residents should stay in, take precautions and lock their doors"

In case you didn't get what I referred to, there is no reason to doubt via a SARS like virus with respiratory sickness may be transmitted via air. Their default reaction should have been to assume the worst. Further, saying that travel restrictions do not stop a disease is a stupid statement to make. Specially when we see South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, NZ etc exterminate the virus.

WHO is to blame as much as individual governments.
