leftnode··on Postgres gets support for upsert
Same thing here, I would love this feature. I like to make my tables have a common structure:

    id
    created_at
    updated_at
    status
    fkey1_id
    fkey2_id
    fkey3_id
    date_field1
    date_field2
    column1
    column2
    column3
Being able to add a new foreign key column with the "rest" of them would be awesome.
leftnode··on Deprecating the Sync and Datastore APIs
It also has a Wifi sync which allows you to sync and keep your passwords off Dropbox.
leftnode··on Ask HN: What are the best product landing pages you've stumbled upon?
Just Landed is a Unix program to a T: it does one thing and does one thing well. Absolutely gorgeous landing page and app.
leftnode··on Why One Programmer Doesn’t Do DevOps Anymore
In addition to that, I always thought DevOps meant operations people using development practices and tools to automate and simplify their lives? Does it have to be more complex than that?
leftnode··on Swiftype Raises $13M
So happy for Swiftype. I hope they can take on the Oracle Endeca's of the world and continue to provide an amazing service.
leftnode··on Show HN: Slack Meets GitHub Issues
I'll come out with a contrarian point of view: I think you're wasting your time and certainly your money.

To have invested your life savings into this app which, uh, is really hard to determine what it does seems silly to me - especially since you have a family to care for.

Slack Meets GitHub Issues? Doesn't Slack already meet GitHub issues in that it integrates with GitHub fine?

The fact that you need a very long blog post to explain exactly what this does should be a warning sign that it's unfocused and released too late.

"It can help you manage everything from todo items to chat messages to blog posts to photos to fully-fledged projects, photo albums and even mini social networks! Really, the type of content you create is completely up to you."

That sounds like a nightmare to me, now I have to invest a lot of time to figure out exactly how this thing works? Start small, focused, make one small thing that does one thing well. Release it quickly, try to get a few people using it (hopefully paying for it) and gather some of their feedback. Find out how they're using it and what their pain points are. Grow from there.

I know you said opportunities where you live are few and far between, and you clearly have the skills, why can't you build a production ready application at an established company?

Finally, I'm being overly critical because I've been in a similar situation before - you spend months building something, release it, and argh! why aren't people coming? It's frustrating, I know, but your skills are better put to use elsewhere.

leftnode··on Laravel 5 released
I'm a fan of Symfony but love that there are several advanced frameworks pushing the state of the art forward (Symfony, Laravel, ZF2).
leftnode··on A new way to lock your computers: just walk away
I set up hot corners so moving the mouse to the bottom right corner locks the computer.
leftnode··on Ask HN: What do you use to host your landing pages?

leftnode··on Workshape.io – Talent matching for tech startups
I interviewed at Amazon 2 years ago and they wanted to do a real time coding session, but had no way of easily sharing code. I said I'd just post it in a GitHub Gist and read out the URL and he was dumbfounded and had never heard of this before. So yeah, _lots_ of developers don't have GitHub profiles or even know what it is.
leftnode··on Why I don’t like hackathons
Yes, that's true, but having an entire group of similar like minded people may not be a recipe for producing the best software.
leftnode··on RubyGems.org Redesign
Not with a smaller monitor. 13" rMBP and it took me a while to see it - it's obscured by the globe wireframe.

leftnode··on Ask HN: Examples of good PHP code (entire projects) where can I find them?
May start here: https://github.com/search?l=PHP&o=desc&q=php&s=stars&type=Re... and see what you find.

Particularly, the newer PHP frameworks, Guzzle, Composer, and PHPUnit are good to look at.

leftnode··on Drupal Core – Highly Critical Public Service announcement
You can run your composer.lock file through here https://security.sensiolabs.org/check to see if there are any vulnerabilities reported against your dependencies.
leftnode··on Ask HN: Why learn non-JS languages/framework?
This is great advice. If you spend your time only reading about the latest startups, you'll think everyone is using Javascript and Node for everything.

The vast majority of software is not written in either of these two. And it's not a knock on them, there just a tremendous amount of software out there and most of it pre-dates the Javascript/Node environment.

leftnode··on Peridot – the highly extensible, highly enjoyable, PHP testing framework
Thanks for releasing your hard work!

I know this isn't exactly the same as PHPUnit or Behat, but you're going to have a difficult time convincing developers to move away from those.

No developer is going to convert an existing PHPUnit test suite to this, but some information on the page about why I should use this instead of (addition to?) PHPUnit on my next project would be great.

leftnode··on Nexus 6
Help drive adoption of Google cloud storage would be my guess.
leftnode··on Things You Should Know About AWS
Awesome, thanks for that!
leftnode··on Things You Should Know About AWS
What is the 'aws' command in example #2? Is that a Ruby/Python/other script released by Amazon or a 3rd party?
leftnode··on Show HN: Advanced Web Applications Using Symfony
Author here. Several ways: the first half of the book was much more difficult to write as I was finding my voice and writing about non-Symfony tech (you can read the first two chapters on the website).

Additionally, I run my own software company so I can dedicate a full day to writing if I want (I've been writing in the evenings only).

Finally, if I don't feel I can make the date then I will let everyone on the pre-order list know and they can opt to have their pre-order canceled (no money exchanges hands until the book is published).

Thanks for the question!

leftnode··on Cloud-based User Management for Web Apps
I wish you the best of luck with this. It's really well designed.

I launched a very similar service named Accthub about 18 months ago and unfortunately it didn't fare well. Now, there's Mozilla Persona, Stormpath, Userapp, and probably several other in the same space.

Hope you can turn it into a legit business, but the general issue developers had was:

1) This is not a legit issue I have, my framework can handle this in the matter of a few minutes, maybe an hour or two if I want something really complex. 2) Privacy concerns. 3) High availability issues.

Best of luck, I will be monitoring your service closely because I want it to do well.

leftnode··on Humble Comedy Bundle
This is an amazing bundle.

Patrice O'Neal sadly died a few years ago, but his comedy was still hilarious. Maria Bamford is great.

Hannibal Buress is probably one of my favorite rising comedians today.

The great thing about this bundle is that you can check out most of the comedians on YouTube, but I definitely recommend buying it.

leftnode··on Simple API with Nginx and PostgreSQL
Hopefully the former. It would be difficult to build anything non-trivial with it. However, I suppose you could build a basic counter or key-value system over HTTP with it.
leftnode··on Choosing an OSS license
Could you just claim it to be in the public domain?
leftnode··on Lead Bullets (2011)
I agree completely. The geek in me wants to know what they executed on. If I'm an entrepreneur facing the same situation, I'd like to read exactly what others did. Even if it can't help me directly, it gives me some motivation that if others did it, I can do it as well.

Even if it was boring or rote work, I'd love to know what it was.

leftnode··on PhD vs Startup
Why not both? The university I attended, UT Dallas, has a program called the Venture Development Center. Professors can pitch a start-up idea, and if they get accepted, the university donates office space and computers/software/etc. The professors Ph.D students get to work on the startup as an employee while also working toward their Ph.D.
leftnode··on Song of GitHub
This is great, I love small hacks like these!

I would love to be able to authorize it with my Github account so it can read my contributions to my private repository. All around great work.

leftnode··on Facebook Graph Search: Marketing Opportunities and a Potential Privacy Nightmare
Alternatively, I'd never want to work for someone who judged me entirely on some off color humor or silly photos on Facebook.
leftnode··on Major API - a RESTful API for QuickBooks
As long as the QuickBooks WebConnector software can run with your QuickBooks installation, you should be good to go, we're not restricting it to any specific countries.
leftnode··on Major API - a RESTful API for QuickBooks
I don't know yet. There's so many different working parts of QuickBooks it's tough to determine where to prioritize. Some of our initial customers use vendors extensively, so they're a bit higher on the list.
