leftcenterright··on Boycott IETF 127
Being detained is way worse than being denied entry.

> I was then placed in a real jail unit: two levels of cells surrounding a common area, just like in the movies. I was put in a tiny cell alone with a bunk bed and a toilet.

> The best part: there were blankets. After three days without one, I wrapped myself in mine and finally felt some comfort.

How is this not "new at all"? I just don't understand why some people are so blind to the ongoing abuse of power. What a shame!

leftcenterright··on Google to buy Wiz for $32B
> if you set and follow good policies

Is it really that hard? like I listed out, it is definitely not cheap. There isn't a shortage of skilled engineers in IT after massive layoffs. What's the catch then?

leftcenterright··on Google to buy Wiz for $32B
I still find it amazing that:

- Businesses pay the cloud providers to allow them to use compute/disk/network

- Businesses pay to hire the engineers who can work on cloud

- Businesses pay to hire security engineers who can secure the applications in cloud

- Businesses pay to hire FinOps to optimize their cloud usage

- Businesses hire security companies to secure their cloud usage (e.g. Wiz was one such company)

- Now cloud provider has to acquire the security company to secure their own cloud?

Either I am too old, or there is something wrong here. Let's not forget that at the same time many big businesses do just fine by not using AWS/GCP/Azure.

leftcenterright··on Moving away from US cloud services
I do understand that, my point was that the pieces needed to provide it as a managed service are much easier to come up with in comparison to what AWS had to do with Fargate.

leftcenterright··on Moving away from US cloud services
wouldn't it work with 100 not-so-hyper scalers as well though? It does not have to be AWS, GCP, Azure.
leftcenterright··on Moving away from US cloud services
You seem to be living in an alternate universe where US can be seen as a reliable partner and would never abuse its power in tech.
leftcenterright··on Moving away from US cloud services
counterpoint: not everyone needs a hyperscaler. Especially with open source like Kubernetes out there. Of course the more experience companies have managing it, better the service becomes. But I don't see why it can't happen within EU.
leftcenterright··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
In the UN resolution, US did not even dare "condemning" Moscow's actions and supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity. They did not even have to do anything but use words, a mere symbolic gesture. It is shameful.

Wouldn't you say that the approach taken by the son is what we need as a society though? polarization and parallel-universes do not seem to be helping at all.
leftcenterright··on Ask HN: Is there a risk of e.g. AWS/GCP services getting "tariffed" in Europe?
In any case, choosing local EU services seems better. At least have a contingency plan or go multi-provider if you are a big enough company.

Tthat's exactly what a good friend of mine said when predictions from 2021 - 2024 failed to materialize. I do care about him a lot but its getting harder over time because nothing seems to change the convictions.
leftcenterright··on A son spent a year trying to save his father from conspiracy theories
Any top ones you might like to share? I have not seen far-right-level of belief and sticking to false predictions even when proven wrong among people who might be called far-left.

Free market where Big tech thrives and wants even fewer regulation, does seem to be dirty indeed. Just speaking of the IT field where I do know a thing or two, without regulations, none of these companies would even disclose that they have had a data breach.

> Violent online groups are targeting and manipulating vulnerable children and young people across widely accessible online platforms. There are multiple groups, associations and evolving subgroups that make up the online network known as The Com – short for community. The Com is a virtual community of groups and individuals who conduct illicit activities that glorify serious violence, cruelty, and gore.

> Elements of The Com network are known to have extreme ideological views and victimise children, coercing them to commit violent acts. Predators groom their victims through different methods – one approach is establishing friendships based on trust or romantic relationships. Another technique involves the use of power or coercive tactics with one goal – taking control over the victims, while getting them to engage in serious violence, self-harm, or other gruesome. It’s a vicious cycle - the predators in this network influence children or young people into conducting acts that increasingly shame, incriminate, or isolate them, this in turn makes them more vulnerable to further exploitation.

It's resally common knowledge if you work as a Cyber crime responder or visit some of those forums (e.g. breachforums). Krebs of course has to have a few good contacts in those circles.

leftcenterright··on Ask HN: Are there "story-based" and "fact-based" people?
sure, but isn't this also a story with that perspective? I am not Data or Spock but can sure try to question everything and seek provable facts? Extreme bias makes people close their minds and just not consider any facts that do not align with their "story".
leftcenterright··on Ask HN: Are there "story-based" and "fact-based" people?
It sure does ring true. I think fact-based more or less overlaps with unbiased and open-mindedness while the other category is more on the side of having certain mental biases either as a result of personal experience or ideology, for this category new evidence and facts do not make much of a difference unless they are too big and readily perceivable.

Their "server count" is definitely much higher than what you are thinking.
