left-struck··on The Emergent Symbolic Structure of Artificial Neural Networks
Which scam sorry?
left-struck··on GPU World
Back in 2023 I sent myself an email with some predictions about the future and my thoughts on LLMs at the time, good and bad. I can’t remember when it’s supposed to arrive though…
left-struck··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
First of all, starlink has been jammed in conflict zones.

Secondly, the number of satellites doesn’t really matter, the jamming happens at the end user level not at the satellite.

Finally, where are you getting that 20k number from? It’s not like there’s 20k starlink satellites in LOS to your station at all times. The earth will be obscuring many of those, they are below your feet on the other side of the planet.

left-struck··on ChatGPT Work Tool and Skill Reference
I keep seeing comments like this, and having messed around and generated a few (non-public) websites myself they all looked completely different?

Mind you I don’t spend a lot of time on ai generated websites or the kinds of places you might find those. Well except for HN but you get my point.

left-struck··on Why OOP Exists
Well maybe they learnt proper computer science after university.
left-struck··on Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing?
I think there’s still value in hand made furniture with little to no power tool involvement. There’s certainly value in creating furniture yourself in this way. It doesn’t give answer the question about the people who loved that job , the many old school carpenters who had to adapt or give up.

I wonder if hand coding will become mostly a hobby and maybe a niche market. I’m not saying I like it, that’s tbd, but I wonder about it.

left-struck··on Creepy Crawlies
Read the article, it will tell you why it won’t work.
left-struck··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
Or ya know, make a gun using a cnc machine, or are they gonna ban those too?

It’s so ridiculously easy to assemble a 3d printer from individually sourced parts, and find some open source firmware to run it. How is this going to stop anyone who’s dishonest and slightly motivated?

What’s next is thinking about guns is a thought crime.

There’s a cynical part of me that sees this as having nothing to do with guns. Technology used to empower people. You can do anything with a computer running Linux, you used to be able to go anywhere on the web and do anything you like. There’s wasn’t a curated experience, a whitelist of apps. This is a bad thing for people who want to control and manipulate. They want us to mindlessly use our closed of devices that only show us what they want us to see and do what they approve. 3d printers can’t be allowed in such a world.

left-struck··on Aptera announces a $44M to design and build a solar electric vehicle
There are some reasons like the added bom cost to the car.

I guess it’s a nice option to have in the market but if what you’re going for is minimal carbon emissions impact it would be best to put those solar panels on house roof I think.

left-struck··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
I disagree, clearly purchasing choices only hurt you and doesn’t help the situation.

Instead we should embrace hacker culture and take by force that which won’t be given to us. By force I mean the gentle kind of force of forcibly owning the stuff you already legally own.

There’s never been a better time, we’re in this sweet spot where we have LLM agents that can help normal people do this stuff, but not yet at the point where a significant amount of the consumer technology we use has been hardened.

left-struck··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
I don’t think that will help with the TV installing malware on your pc. Though to your point, Claude or codex could probably help with that too.
left-struck··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Ah that’s great news, I’m from Perth but currently living abroad.
left-struck··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Something that is amazing about Sydney’s system though is that as a visitor to Sydney you can likely use the train system without needing an app or any sign up. Just use your credit or debit card via nfc on your phone (or the physical one)

I was honestly so impressed by that, you mean I can just tap on? Don’t need to stand here outside the gates for 10 minutes entering my info into a frustrating app? Don’t need to buy a $10 card, only $5 of which I’ll ever use? Even with suica being pretty easy to set up on iPhone, this is definitely something Sydney’s got over Japan’s system.

left-struck··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
I actually don’t think banning “the algorithm” is the right solution either, nor are the identity verification disguised as age gates. But I would like to see the US government do something. I actually think Lina Khan was doing some good things.
left-struck··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
It’s interesting that you bring up wrongthink. Banning free speech would be something like out of 1984, but what we have is far more subtle and insidious. A system that shows you only what it wants you to see, while tricking you into thinking you’re seeing what you want to see.

Anyway, you can support free speech while hating this algorithm crap at the same time.

left-struck··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
How would that be manipulative?
left-struck··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
I would fund things which make people less susceptible to manipulation and more equipped to think for themselves.

Because I believe in democracy not as a political tool but as a fundamental right. I don’t wish to use democracy to gain more power.

But maybe that’s why I’ll never be in that position, to make that choice.

left-struck··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
> And then we'll brand anyone who dares to go to the bathroom a sex offender

>anyone

What? I’ve never heard of this, what part of the world do you live in?

left-struck··on To become a better writer, read as much as you can
I think the premise of the article is more that it would be extraordinarily difficult to become a good writer if you didn’t read much.

Because from the article: > One of the key things I’ve learned is this: there’s no real blueprint.

So to me it’s saying there’s a lot of different ways to cook this stew but it always requires this ingredient

left-struck··on Scrap (2006)
I also think that we should have mercy for people who’ve made mistakes. People who’ve willingly done dumb things, especially when they were young.

I feel this way because I did dumb things when I was young, and I’m sure you did too dear reader, and at least for me, I was lucky that those dumb things didn’t end in catastrophe.

It’s like it’s human nature to forget the dumb things you did if you were lucky enough to escape the consequences, and look down on those who weren’t so lucky.

left-struck··on It is a sign of the times that Amazon gets to call this fair use
Scanning is not the ip theft, it never was.
left-struck··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
Sorry, I didn’t realise you were the author
left-struck··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
Ah, sorry I wasn’t aware of that either
left-struck··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
You should make that obvious in some way like using “TLDR”. I assume many people, like me, would attempt to parse your comment as a comment on the article, after all it’s in the comment section, and read that way it’s very confusing lol.
left-struck··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
Why should corporations have the same rights and freedoms as human beings?

I think this is a far more important question than do you believe in right or left economic policy. idc, I want you to know, do you think a human’s rights, especially many humans together, outweigh that of non living entities like large tech companies.

left-struck··on GIMP Development Update
In my mind it’s similar to exif
left-struck··on Asus Bike Booster
Most bicycle parts don’t cost thousands of dollars though
left-struck··on Codex in ChatGPT desktop app for Linux is now in preview
While it may not be the majority of Linux usage, there’s a pretty big uptake in Linux desktop these days, and there millions of people actively using Linux desktop distros
left-struck··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
Have you tried call screening? I know for sure apple phones can do this but I believe some android phones can too?

For me, all unknown calls are screened. Which means if someone who’s not in my contacts calls me, they get some automatic voice saying something like “this is apple screen calling, please let me know who you are and why you are calling” The person calling then either hangs up or says something, if they say something I can see the live transcription and answer the call immediately if it’s important.

It’s been incredibly effective. I’ve been using it for a couple of years now with no complaints from anyone for not being able to reach me, and not once have I answered a scam call during that period.

I’ve had a few situations similar to what you describe, some service I’m using like a doctor, realestate agent etc called me and I immediately recognised who they are and why they are calling and answered.

left-struck··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
Having lived in both Australia and Japan and visited SK, for me it seems like it’s rude in all those places but only in some places do almost all the people care what strangers think enough to modify their behaviour. Which is not as judgmental a statement as it sounds like, because that care, or some might call it pressure to conform, has upsides and downsides.
