leephillips··on Mamdani Hires Lisa Gelobter as Chief Tech Officer
The NYT seems to have an interest in making Mamdani and his administration more palatable to their readers:

NYC is a special case, because it’s at or near the center of the universe: the US financial hub, the center of theater, dominant in all entertainment media, the UN headquarters, the most important historical entry point for all immigrant groups, the most important city for book publishing, advertising, etc. It’s one of the five most important, powerful cities in the world. It has its own foreign policy and diplomatic relationships. Its mayors have frequently, and for many decades, been interviewed for their opinions on world affairs that would seem, at first glance, to have nothing to do with city government.
leephillips··on Mimes directing traffic in Bogotá had surprisingly loud impacts (2025)
From the article:

‘“The people who designed it understood that in a 7-million-person city like Bogotá, a very small percentage would actually see the mime artists,” says Felipe Cala Buendía, the author of Cultural Producers and Social Change in Latin America. However, Mockus believed in the power of word of mouth.’

Amazing.

I used them at the (US) Naval Research Laboratory, programming in a dialect of C called C*. This automatically distributed arrays among the many processors, similar to how modern Fortran can work with coarrays.

If the problem was very data-parallel, one could get nearly perfect linear speedups.

leephillips··on Termux
I just downloaded the archive (from the usual Julia downloads page) for ARM on the phone and put a link to the binary in /usr/local/bin — same as on Linux desktop. But I did this in the proot Debian environment.

I use it to run Julia on my phone: https://lee-phillips.org/juliaOnPhone.jpg
leephillips··on How to choose colors for your CLI applications (2023)
Nice. I put this in my .zshrc.
leephillips··on We will ban you and ridicule you in public if you waste our time on crap reports
I was unclear. I’m pretty sure the wrong directions I routinely got in the US (I was born and raised in NYC) were not made up, just wrong.
leephillips··on We will ban you and ridicule you in public if you waste our time on crap reports
I got this so often in every part of the United States that some decades ago I just stopped asking anyone for directions.
leephillips··on Kagi releases alpha version of Orion for Linux
Google started as a company that seemed worthy of trust. The founders had ideals and followed them. Look what happened. Companies can turn evil surprisingly quickly. I'm also a Kagi customer, but I wouldn’t use a closed-source browser either.
leephillips··on Ask HN: Why has "using" gone out of fashion?
It’s just transient fashion, driven by people who don’t read books. In another few years the same type of people might be using “employ” or something instead of “utilize”, or returning to “use”.

If you want your English to be good, try to spend more time with books, and less time with anything written after about 1960. This (excellent, and free) advice applies to native speakers as well as those enjoying English as a second (or third, etc.) language.

leephillips··on Show HN: Tylax – A bidirectional LaTeX to Typst converter in Rust
That makes sense, especially the issue with macros. As many people have pointed out, since TeX is not just markup but an actual programming language, its output can not be determined, in the general case, without running the source through the TeX interpreter. Of course, the same is true of Typst.
leephillips··on So you wanna de-bog yourself (2024)
“unsticking myself always seems to be a matter of finding a name for the thing happening to me”
leephillips··on Show HN: Tylax – A bidirectional LaTeX to Typst converter in Rust
Could you briefly explain why Pandoc was not sufficient? (Obviously it can’t do the TikZ -> CeTZ conversion.)
leephillips··on CSS sucks because we don't bother learning it (2022)
Without doubt.
leephillips··on Ask HN: Anyone still using RSS feeds?
Every day. Who doesn’t?
leephillips··on I'm in Charge at This Hertz Location, and Buddy, You're Not Getting a Car Today
I’ve had better luck with Turo.
leephillips··on The Origins of APL (1974) [video]
I was an undergraduate there. David Kelly was my advisor. APL was my first programming language (using the DecWriter paper terminals) and it’s still my favorite.
leephillips··on Show HN: Ez FFmpeg – Video editing in plain English
No problem. I only asked because if there were a CLI version I wanted to know about it.
leephillips··on Show HN: Ez FFmpeg – Video editing in plain English
Looks like a GUI wrapper in fact, no?
leephillips··on Nabokov's guide to foreigners learning Russian
He might have been unusually color aware, as brown is a type of red.
leephillips··on Ask HN: Running your own email service?
Just rent a server with a good company (such as Hetzner) that’s likely to have clean IPs, install Linux and Postfix, and Dovecot if you want IMAP access, read and carefully follow the Postfix documentation, read any of many online guides for setting up DKIM, etc., and you’re good. Once up, it’s largely hands-off. Mine has been running smoothly for over a decade. Don’t believe the FUD.
leephillips··on A Starlink satellite exploded
Probably more irrelevant than obnoxious. Is there a term of art under discussion here?
leephillips··on A Starlink satellite exploded
Not so much. What I have are opinions, some of them aesthetic opinions. What is tiresome is hearing, yet again, someone’s opinions being disqualified by being lazily classified as “presciptivist”, as if that decides the matter.
leephillips··on A Starlink satellite exploded
There is nothing about using “demise” as a verb in your first link. I see “root cause” as a verb in the Urban Dictionary, but neither that nor your link (both crowd-sourced) are evidence that it’s a common usage. But it’s clearly not unheard of. How unspeakably vulgar.
leephillips··on A Starlink satellite exploded
That’s some weird use of language in the tweet. It uses “demise” and “root cause” as verbs (demise can be a verb, but it doesn’t mean what the tweet author thinks it means). Is this some new form of corporate-speak that I haven’t encountered before?
leephillips··on Interactive Fluid Typography
Me neither. What you mean, redbluered?
leephillips··on The Mysterious Forces Steering Views on Hacker News

leephillips··on Learning Fortran (2024)
Wow, me too. Maybe more like 1982.
