ledgerdev··on My VM is lighter (and safer) than your container (2017)
> generate systemd units for containers

Oh man that is something I've been wanting as well.

ledgerdev··on General Availability of .NET Aspire: Simplifying .NET Cloud-Native Development
So I have not yet tried out this aspire, but my gut feeling (as a long time dotnet dev) is that this will turn into a tangled web of complexity down the road.
ledgerdev··on Migrating Uber's ledger data from DynamoDB to LedgerStore
Say you wanted to build an app on a database like LedgerStore but at much smaller scale, what are the best open source options out there right now?
ledgerdev··on My VM is lighter (and safer) than your container (2017)
Thanks for the suggestion, I was unaware of podman and will be trying it out because root has always bothered me.
ledgerdev··on Kobold letters: HTML emails are a risk
Between these sorts of email tricks and ability to easily voice clone using ai, it would seem that invoicing systems should put some sort of 2 factor approval/confirmation into the workflow for payouts.
ledgerdev··on htmx 2.0.0-beta1
Next time I work on it, will try to see if that resolves it.

Last year chrome started discarding background tabs to save memory, probably should have said discard rather then sleep it's been a while since I worked on that. Our user base keeps tabs in background often in mobile devices and we saw some reports of it. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/02/chrome-110-will-auto...

When you do an htmx navigation to a new page, a discarded tab will "restore" only the last htmx fragment loaded, not the entire html page with style tags. Fix is to use unique url on push that isn't in local cache which forces a server reload on tab wake from discard.

ledgerdev··on htmx 2.0.0-beta1
I used htmx to build a now in production multi-step payment form that's currently in use by several hundred thousand people per month. It's been great, but not perfect and I would say a less well trodden path to get the edge cases right. I would absolutely say it's been a simpler overall solution for us as a small team than a full js client side framework would have been. Things that were hard to get right were setting up loading indicators, error display, keeping step/form state on browser history back/forward, tab sleep restoration after htmx navigation(especially tricky), and injection of third party form elements that had to be injected/remove and re-injected on back/forward between steps. I would be surprised if these sorts of edge cases weren't already handled by a popular js-frameworks but can't say for sure. The site load is very fast and we haven't even rolled out client side js validation on forms the server validation responds so fast. We are planning to use more htmx across other apps at present, so overall positive hypermedia for the win.

This looks excellent. Since this is a university project, what future plans/hopes do you have for the project?
ledgerdev··on WebAssembly Playground
I've been wondering how WASM GC works with multiple wasm modules, it sounds like you might know. Does WASM GC exist outside individual modules managing memory for many, or is it "contained" inside each module? Does it allow for efficient sharing and minimal copies of memory between modules when host calls both?

For example say you have some data like (eg. string "abc123") in host memory and then pass into module A which then reads/operates the data, and then returns some other data to the host. The host then calls into module B passing the original host data and data returned from call to module A. Can that original host data be shared efficiently and managed by WASM GC between modules?

ledgerdev··on WebAssembly Playground
What host language and guest language would be top of list? I have some a few working I have been playing with.
ledgerdev··on WebAssembly Playground
From my perspective It's 2 primary blockers.

1. It's too damn hard to get data into and out of wasm modules. The component model is addressing this but it's sprawled out into literally rebuilding "worlds" and turning wasm modules into sort of lightweight virtual machines. I wish there was just more of a focus on getting data into and out of modules first.

2. Lack of GC which has made languages like js/python/jvm/c# unfeasible. WASM GC is just now available and hopefully ship compilers can target and build wasm modules that aren't so large in not too distant future.

Once we are past these 2 items, wasm can run free and really should become the final unit of deployment.

edit: I also suspect that like the jvm which started as a client tech, wasm will find more use on the server side, than on the client side in info/business type software.

Have you considered an open source the parser/compiler framework that targets wasm? I suspect that dsl's and tiny languages compiled directly to wasm could be valuable.
ledgerdev··on Consumer Reports finds 'widespread' presence of plastics in food
Yes, they measured bisphenols and phthalates.

I actually tracked down the original which has charts of how much was found, and is what should have been linked to in this post. https://www.consumerreports.org/health/food-contaminants/the...

Frankly it's frightening to consider the implications.

ledgerdev··on Consumer Reports finds 'widespread' presence of plastics in food
I would strongly encourage you look into the research of Dr Shawna Swan. She's done several studies since the 1990's that have found and then later confirmed very alarming effects on testosterone and unborn children. And it's not just plastics causing this, it's pesticides and parabens too.
ledgerdev··on The best WebAssembly runtime may be no runtime
This is an amazing idea! Am I missing something or does this sound like a viable way to build cross ecosystem packages with strong sandboxing? I am thinking generating and compiling wasm to a native lib, then calling that native library from pip/npm/maven/nuget packages. I wonder if one could auto generate those binding and build a repo that pushes to all ecosystems from a single code base.

My use case would be a wasm based validation lib that could be used in the browser, in edge proxies like cloudflare workers, and in a variety of backends(py/node/.net/java). This approach would negate the need to package a wasm engine like wasmtime.

ledgerdev··on WASM by example
With supply chain attacks becoming more of an issue the strong sandboxing of library permissions would a huge benefit also. A thought on how this might be workable would be to have a wasm registry that when pushed to, would auto-build packages for each ecosystem, then push upstream to npm/maven/etc.

Of course the "component model" or some agreed upon structure of data shared among modules and the mappings to each language is the missing piece.

ledgerdev··on Mastercard Should Stop Selling Our Data
> property taxes and electric bill charge me an extra fee for credit card payment (which I prefer since it is push and also rewards)

Precisely why credit cards are a hidden parasite on overall economic activity. They incentivize customers to use to get rewards and then take a ~4% cut of the payment from the merchant. So that's why merchants charge you extra fee they need to make up that 4% cost somewhere and it's either fees or raising prices even though you might not realize it.

ledgerdev··on Mastercard Should Stop Selling Our Data
Yes FedNow (and RTP from the Clearinghouse) are captured from bank account, but are push unlike debit which is a pull like credit cards. I looked into it for bill payments and there's a FedNow feature to request payment but it's still in very early stages I don't know if it's even implemented for any of the banks that do support fed now already.
ledgerdev··on Moonbit: Fast, compact and user friendly language for WebAssembly
Very cool, I really love to see these new wasm native languages, very exciting.

Do you have any plans for a standard library? Build one specific for the language, or will perhaps try use or create/collaborate on a cross language standard library based on wasm component model? Is this even possible or good idea?

May I ask the toolchain you're using to build Moonbit?

ledgerdev··on How small is the smallest .NET Hello World binary?
This is far more relevant and exciting This is way more exciting. https://twitter.com/MStrehovsky/status/1669502394827419648

> "A fully self-contained natively compiled C# Hello World, including GC and everything can be as small as ~440 kB."

.net classic framework is windows deprecated legacy, and really no new apps should be built on it.

It sort of zooms out and shows top level lines at regular size, but a mini-map like view of code underneath the top level. It's very smooth too.

I quit aeropress for precisely this a couple years ago. Having tried many different methods, I've settled on using a stainless filter and brew into a measuring cup and let it settle out for a minute or 2. It's easy, and not worried about putting so much pressure on the rim of a mug with boiling liquid. Also have moved to smaller insulated glass cups rather than larger mugs, which would never work with aeropress, helps cut down on caffeine intake.
ledgerdev··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?
Reminds me of the wise words of Steve Jobs, the sales and marketing people are running things now. The product Genius has been rotted out, by people who have no conception of good product, no feeling in their heart about wanting to help customers.

ledgerdev··on Representing Enums in PostgreSQL
If you use longer named enums(eg. my_enum_xyz) in my_enum, does this store a full copy of the enum text bytes of 'my_enum_xyz' into table foo?
