The M5's GPU specs seem to put it near a high-end NVIDIA card from 2018. Impressive as all get out for a power-friendly chip, but not really what I think of when I hear "good for gaming"
I'm happy to hear your games work well for you, but it sounds like the games you're playing aren't demanding compared to modern AAA titles. Most games released in the last year or two don't run well on my 2080 test system at anything approaching decent graphics.
Even a Studio Display, which can provide more power than my M1 Pro can use, won't wake it from this state. Apple wants $300 for a replacement battery so I'll just buy a new MacBook at that price, but the charger situation doesn't bode well for M5 MacBook buyers who wonder why their Mac is dead one day (and they just need the exact charger the system wants, but Apple didn't provide it)
Even pre-Apple Silicon, it's been a decade since users could upgrade MacBook's RAM or internal storage.
You're not silly, you're just able to see reality.
Apple knows who is buying the bulk of their computers, and it isn't power users ... most people buying computers don't have a clue what RAM is even used for.
I'd hit beachballs, but macOS balances 8GB of RAM fine even with Tahoe for regular users
From a buyer's perspective, I don't like it at all.
There isn't a "dev switch" in macOS, so you have to know which setting is getting in your way. Apple doesn't like to EVER show error alerts if at all possible to suppress, so when things in your dev environment fail, you don't know why.
If you're a seasoned dev, you have an idea why and can track it down. If you're learning as you go or new to things, it can be a real problem to figure out if the package/IDE/runtime you're working with is the problem or if macOS Gatekeeper or some other system protection is in the way.
Have you checked your Battery Health?
If you have an intel-based Mac, it's the same expected battery life as Windows and 2.5 hours on an intel MacBook battery sounds decent for something 5+ years old.
This is not how shipping works.
A larger box, even by 1 inch on any direction, absolutely makes a huge difference when shipping in manufacturing quantities. Let's not pretend physical volume doesn't exist just to make an argument.
10 planes flying with MacBooks == much different than 1 plane (in other words, when you 10x the size of something, as you suggest, it does actually have a huge impact)
As far as I know, the US has zero warranty laws. It can be zero days.
Had a similar issue with my 2018 MBP Intel - the 86/87 Watt Apple charger was the only thing it would come to life with as the battery aged if the device got too low.
Noticed you forgot to respond to this as you quickly ran away from any self-reflection
I don't think you can tell, but you believe it - if you approach people with this kind of attitude, it is no wonder you have never made it over the hump with someone who actually needs help and is busy with their pressing business and isn't a perfect client
It's great when someone pays promptly, but I'd be a fool to turn my nose up at someone because they take a few weeks to open their wallet and pay an invoice for temporary use of my brainpower to do something for them when they needed my help.
I see clients as human beings with different routines, ryhthms, and even procedures of getting something paid. Just because I mark something on a piece of paper as the day I'd like to be paid for it doesn't mean I'll lose my mortgage and go hand to mouth the day after, and I don't expect a client to call me feverishly worried if they forgot to turn in an invoice until yesterday and the payment will be a few weeks. OK. I run my business & life in a way that doesn't put me in a bind if someone else needs a little time.
Treating people this way allows you to form relationships - which is in and of itself much more rewarding, on a more meaningful level.
I don't value or see a reason to enforce military-like pay schedule with the people that I judge on their... what did you say?
> from the first interview what kind of client they are
I think this says a lot more about you. Usually, this is called stereotyping. It can lead to inadvertent racism, sexism, and biases against those your so promptly judge.
You should be aware that you might be focused on the cheque, which has a finite and set value, instead of the person and relationship you can build with each client - which has an unlimited value.
Plus, as far as we know, we get one chance to live our life. Maybe you could try not treating people like you describe, it might make your one life experience different when you see how other people respond.
I think this is the part people are upset about
I can't imagine the number of clients I would have lost over the years if I'd had this approach.
People need time to pay for soft services. Unless you're billing hourly for your time at general labor rates, surely the margins are incredible for what you're doing.
Being a jerk to a client is a surefire way to end that relationship. Some clients who have taken their sweet time to pay over the years are also some of my longest and overall most valuable business contacts. Being a jerk to them would have given someone else a chance to step in and earn their business by providing better customer service.
Invoice dates aren't thermonuclear deadlines and treating them as if they are is shortsighted.
This is not long enough. You can say whatever deadline you want on your invoice, but in reality it will be paid approximately 30-120 days after it gets received by the person responsible for paying invoices at the company you work with.
> two weeks later i’m refreshing stripe like a fool
This is still definitely not long enough. Also, Stripe is extremely risky. One chargeback and you can lose a lot.
> just trying to see if this pain’s real enough that people (like you) would drop around $49/mo for it
No: Invoicing/billing/client contact info is the most important data a small business should keep secure. Further, I would never let an automated system reach out to valued clients on my behalf--ever. I have high standards for apps I give access to my financials/P&L/client list and it would take years of trust and reviews before I'd ever consider something like this.
> i just need to know if this is a real pain
It sounds 100% self-inflicted and easy to solve. If you want to be paid the second work is over, use a system where the funds are escrowed and released upon client approval of the project.
Otherwise, all you need to solve your pain is to build a 90 day runway of funds (at least) so your clients can follow their standard processes for invoice payment.
You're having imposter syndrome-type response to AI's ability to outcode a human.
We don't look at compliers and beat out fists that we can't write in assembly... why expect your human brain to code as easily or quickly as AI?
The problem you are solving now becomes the higher-level problem. You should absolutely be driving the projects and outcomes, but using AI along the way for programming is part of the satisfaction of being able to do so much more as one person.
When I see "Get a free audit" and "Request pricing", the tab is usually closed and I go to the next link.
I've learned companies without public pricing often have egregiously high costs.
I think you're losing many potential leads -permanently- because of the early 2000s customer acquisition model currently being used.
> Making accessibility more accessible.
Then start by making your product/service accessible by offering up-front, no-B.S. information. It feels like the kind of service I often "rescue" clients from when I find out a non-profit is being gouged for something like this.
I simply quoted the numbers from the article because it was what I was curious about when I saw the headline & picture of the small convoy.
It is insane how much space they take up. Landfills must be full of these huge things.

That said, why is every Linus-related coverage for the last 5 years about him complaining or someone quitting? You'd think they'd generate other coverage now and then.
