laythea··on “Good Code Documents Itself” and Other Jokes You Shouldn’t Tell Yourself
<rant> Why do i have to scroll down a full page to see any text and then when I do, why do I have to zoom out to read it properly? </rant>
laythea··on Notepad++ drops code signing for its releases
Shhh! Don't give them ideas! :)
laythea··on Notepad++ drops code signing for its releases
I can't be alone in not caring too much about the cert.

Notepad++ - Crack on!

laythea··on Nasa's Visual Universe
The bad thing about this way of presentation, is that the circle bubbles are dispersed, at any level. So I need to pan around just to read the text on each, which is very annoying.
laythea··on Grim C++ Tales from the Crypt: The Visitor Pattern (2017)
I clicked the link and then tumblr asked me about privacy, with a link to "Manage options".

I clicked the link, hoping to disable x,y,z and there is just text. No options!

Not reading further.

laythea··on Photographer Uses 150K Moon Photos to Reveal Its Hidden Colors
After reading the article I am none the wiser as to how the image was actually made.

I get that that is is a composite. But is it just a photoshop job? How are the colours determined? Thanks

laythea··on Studying the demise of historic civilisations
No it is not true. What is true, is that nobody actually knows, since we have no idea when humans began, other than "some point before X", where X may be a shadily derived date based on pseudo scientific methods.

I find the fact that we have no idea quite liberating.

laythea··on Studying the demise of historic civilisations
I just started researching this subject recently. Graham Hancock is a very interesting speaker regarding the subject. I highly recommend that anyone interested in this subject to have a listen.

Seems we are on a cycle of occasional doom and gloom, caused by nature. Think ice age cycles.

laythea··on What Every Programmer Should Know About Memory (2007) [pdf]
Can't agree more. If I went to a software job and started reading that stuff I'd get moved into hardware :)

I suppose that's a credit to all the engineers who build all the middle layers that allow software engineers to float along at an abstract and more productive level.

laythea··on Gameboy Emulator for Emacs
That's overkill too.
laythea··on UK weather: February temperature jump was incredible, says climate expert
Whatever we can do is minor in comparison to the overall trend that the earth has for climate change, irrespective of humanity.

To think we can effect a real change and avoid a natural change is to give yourself too much credit.

We should still aim to live in a clean environment, but not with the goal of reversing climate change.

laythea··on UK weather: February temperature jump was incredible, says climate expert
Climate change people. Key word is change. We will need to get used to adapting.
laythea··on Gameboy Emulator for Emacs
Sounds like overkill to me.
laythea··on Don’t Lead by Example
"you’re a member of a team not the boss of the team."

Surely the boss is still a member of the team, otherwise he is chilling, collecting pay checks for nothing.

I don't like the ring fenced sub-team mentality that this comment allows.

Bosses that are not a member of the team, are not proper bosses.

Maybe "figureheads".

laythea··on Microsoft Staff: Do Not Use HoloLens for War
This sounds like a publicity stunt.

No group of educated people can seriously think this would have any effect...

laythea··on Upvote for HN Darkmode?
I can never understand why a simple colour scheme is presented as a "big thing". Consistent dark mode themes seems so unattainable in modern software (in fact any theme customisation).

It is as necessary as cars with different colours. People's preference.

So let stop making a big deal about it, and just have it in all software. Its just a colour scheme! Stop being lazy software devs!

laythea··on World's largest bee ‘rediscovered’ after 38 years
There has to be one.
laythea··on Hayabusa-2: Japan Spacecraft Touches Down on Asteroid
Your statement implies that things will be better when/if we find another decaying rock to spend the rest of eternity on. How so?
laythea··on Apple to Target Combining iPhone, iPad and Mac Apps by 2021
Erm, Unfortunately, I suspect it will be that the professional apps will be (and are being) dumbed down.
laythea··on Meth and murder: New kind of drug war makes Tijuana one of deadliest cities
Yes but as the general population demand increases, economies of scale take factor, so the cost (not the tax) goes down. Still might be more expensive, but less so that the 20%.
laythea··on Ask HN: How do you get over the initial fear of learning something hard or new?
Pick any aspect of said subject and dig in. If possible, have a project to study said subject. Do not look at other aspects of the same subject. Focus. Less thought is more at this point.

The minute you start thinking "oh no the subjects so big, where do I start", you start tying yourself up in mental knots.

Also, have another subject, so when you get fed up, you can take a break and switch subject (maybe forever). You can "find your spot" like that.

To learn is to live! Good luck!

laythea··on Apple tells app developers to disclose or remove screen recording code
Disclose, like in the small text that nobody reads?
laythea··on Apple tells app developers to disclose or remove screen recording code
Is this not hypocritical? I assume Apple does similar (analytics)?
laythea··on FaceTime bug lets you hear audio of person you are calling before they pick up
Maybe it did used to work, but now because of a seemingly unrelated bug fix, it has broken it. Wack-a-mole style.

Takes the engineering right out of software engineering if you ask me.

laythea··on Design flaw behind MacBook Pro’s “stage light” effect
I didn't know that. Thanks.
laythea··on Design flaw behind MacBook Pro’s “stage light” effect
It is a clever move to minimise engineering, whilst maximising profit at the expense of the consumer, whilst the consumer does not realise.

Apple is in a position of power here, due to the public. Fact is, however you cut it, slice it, or dice it, people (in the whole) are stupid and will keep buying Apple for the foreseeable future, despite Apple's efforts at reducing reliability to maximise profits.

They know people will just keep on buying, and I would favour a guess that anyone in their position would be doing exactly what they are.

They will "milk the teet until it stops giving", and then change.

laythea··on It's Time for Action on Data Privacy
Well said.
laythea··on Show HN: Shots AI – Turn designs into code with one click
"Some features, such as the AI based trace-and-export, are pretty heavy on our servers and start getting expensive fast"

Why can't this just be done locally (with no plan needed?).

I hate it when I am artificially pushed into a plan. No thanks.

laythea··on Minimalism: Practical Guide to Writing Less Code (2002) [pdf]
That sounds horrible. I hate code filled with that £(£U*$U&%", autocomplete or not :)
laythea··on I learnt C++ in 2018 and have no regrets
This is true. Whats even worse, is when you downloads some stuff on GitHub to play around and learn from, and then you get frustrated by lack of ability to build the darn thing!
