laurent_du··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
I would be very surprised if the majority, or even a significant fraction, of those who are on the "Israel" side were observing Jews. Jews are probably a minority of Israel-supporting commenters, and observing Jews are, in my experience, a minority of these Jews.
laurent_du··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
Communists were absolutely not oppressed by Tsarists.
laurent_du··on uv: An extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust
Yes `uv` is great but using it to manage dependencies in an AWS Lambda Docker container is really not as simple as using pip or poetry.
laurent_du··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Funny that this "proud Mexican" has such a long story to tell but zero proof to show. Neither he nor his girlfriend were able to record any of that while sitting comfortably in their car?
laurent_du··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
The funny thing is that it's impossible to know which side you belong to just by reading this one comment.
laurent_du··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Not really? These people will simply disregard the clips, claiming they are a piece of right-wing propaganda, and that the protest are peaceful, because how could it be otherwise? Of course fighting ICE, feds, and helping criminals (in some case drug dealers and even at least one murderer) is inherently peaceful, just like the BLM riots were.
laurent_du··on I'm enforcing least privilege in AWS IAM (and automating the cleanup)
Nice write-up but to be honest, just use CDK and you'll be good.
laurent_du··on Codex CLI is going native
What kind of performance gains can you get from that? Seems to me that 99.9% of the compute happens remotely.
laurent_du··on Show HN: AI Baby Monitor – local Video-LLM that beeps when safety rules break
As a parent of several kids, I have no idea what is the use case for this. When does it ever happen that a kid too small to be safe by himself has to be let alone, with a camera to record him? My eyes are a good enough camera, and my brain holds a reasonable list of safety rules. What problem does this solve that isn't already near perfectly solved by my existence?
laurent_du··on Dilbert creator Scott Adams says he will die soon from same cancer as Joe Biden
It's preventable by closing your eyes, but you need to be very persistent. Some people manage to keep their eyes closed for decades, which I find impressive. The rest of us just come to terms with reality.
laurent_du··on Validating a women-only beauty service platform (React/Node/Next.js)
In Europe beauty freelancers are not really a thing, those who do it at home are typically immigrants who ask for lower prices and get paid under the table (meaning they don't declare it to taxes). On the other hand, beauty salon management app is a well-established market.

For inspiration you can look at something like timma which in the Nordics is basically a marketplace and an salon management tool. Clients find beauty salons on the marketplace, and professionals / salon owners advertise their services on the marketplace. The app solves the problems of finding clients, doing marketing, accounting, testimonials, payment, and so on.

I personally wouldn't include portfolio in the V1 of your app because most professionals already use instagram for this and you would be competing with an already established platform without clear benefit. Having a link to the freelancer's instagram in their profile is a no-brainer, of course.

Creating a marketplace from scratch is not easy and you will need a good strategy for that. What other players have done is typically offer the service to freelancers for free for a given time period and then start taking money when you have actual traffic and recognition on both side.

laurent_du··on Qwen3: Think deeper, act faster
I do the same with a small math problem and so far only Qwen3 got it right (tested all thinking models). So your mileage may vary, as they say!
laurent_du··on How much can the average man lift?
Are you talking about deadlift? If so, there's literally tens of thousands of people who can deadlift 120kg (and much more) at your bodyweight. Definitely achievable with a bit of training.
laurent_du··on Watching o3 guess a photo's location is surreal, dystopian and entertaining
I agree with you. The opposite opinion sounds psychotic and paranoid to me.
laurent_du··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
Not enough. Some immigrants come and stay to commit crimes.
laurent_du··on Avoiding Skill Atrophy in the Age of AI
Le plagiat est nécessaire. Le progrés l'exige.
laurent_du··on Don't force your kids to do math
Very poor take. The author clearly has very limited experience with raising kids. Most kids won't do difficult things if you don't push them. Playing music, learning to spell correctly, doing mathematics, and so on. A very small minority of kids will do all of that easily and for the fun, but you can't rely on it. If you don't push your kid to do their 20 minutes of piano every day, they will half-ass it and will stop after 1 year and conclude they are not good at music. Same for sport. Same for reading books. Same for maths. And you know what? It's your fault. You chose to be lazy and complacent and didn't push them because it's hard to be a good parent. And now you expect me to validate your laziness? Nah.
laurent_du··on Show HN: New world record – verified Goldbach Conjecture up to 4*10^18+7*10^13
Impressive work! I did my share and added one billion verified numbers to your total, now you just need to get (almost) another billion of people to do the same and you'll achieve your next goal!
laurent_du··on Soldiers in combat can kill without moral injury
Doomscrolling
laurent_du··on Teuken-7B-Base and Teuken-7B-Instruct: Towards European LLMs (2024)
ChatGPT is very informal and talks like a millennial when I ask questions in French. I hate it.
laurent_du··on Teuken-7B-Base and Teuken-7B-Instruct: Towards European LLMs (2024)
Reminds me of this funny video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY3yWXWjYjA ("You know something has gone wrong when he switches to Chinese")
laurent_du··on Why I Program in Lisp
Got any specific suggestion?
laurent_du··on Obituary for Cyc
Yes. Amazing read. This is the kind of content I come to hacker news for.
laurent_du··on Middle-aged man trading cards go viral in rural Japan town
This is a well-known fact with a well-established genetic basis. For pretty much any trait, the standard deviation of the distribution for men is larger than the distribution for women.
laurent_du··on Middle-aged man trading cards go viral in rural Japan town
Those damn elderly white Japanese men!
laurent_du··on New ChatGPT GPT-4o Model
I had exactly the same thought today so there's at least two of us.
laurent_du··on It is hard to recommend Python in production
I agree with you that for such an application, Python is probably not the right fit.
laurent_du··on It is hard to recommend Python in production
I am not saying the author's remarks are not interesting, but they live in a vacuum. For most projects, the resources spent on the "serving" part of your web service are a small portion of the actual expenses. In many cases, it's going to be less than 1%. Going from 0.1% to 0.01% is not a significant improvement. A typical Django-based application has a lot of non Python code that is running separately and the performance of Django or Python itself are mostly irrelevant. If your application is a TODO app and you have billions of users, maybe yeah.
laurent_du··on Call centres using AI to 'whiten' Indian accents
I had many meetings with our Indian counterparts at a previous company, where honestly I don't think anyone on either side really understood what the others had been saying. Our European accent was probably as hard to decipher for them as their Indian accent was for us. Some AI improvement would probably have been better for everyone.
laurent_du··on QwQ-32B: Embracing the Power of Reinforcement Learning
There's a very simple math question I asked every "thinking" models and every one of them not only couldn't solve it, but gave me logically incorrect answers and tried to gaslight me into accepting them as correct. QwQ spend a lot of time on a loop, repeating the same arguments over and over that were not leading to anything, but eventually it found a correct argument and solved it.

So as far as I am concerned this model is smarter than o1 at least in this instance.
