laurent_du··on At 17, Hannah Cairo solved a major math mystery
Kaczynski was really not on the same level. By several orders of magnitude.
laurent_du··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
People keep repeating this argument that you don't need to know how to do X (where X is something extremely easy) because that's not part of your job, doing your job entails Y (much harder). That's BS. I have never met someone who was good at their job but couldn't do easy things. That's just cope. If you can do hard stuff, you can do easy stuff. If you can't do easy stuff, you definitely can't do hard stuff.

You are not going to do well on "computer bugs" if you don't even have the basic intuition of what an even number is.

Yes, stress is real, that's why we ask very easy questions during interviews. Like summing even numbers.

laurent_du··on Palantir gets $10B contract from U.S. Army
There's a right-wing (or rather far-right) anti-NATO but it's much more confidential. Anti-NATO in Europe is typically found in communist and revolutionary movements.
laurent_du··on Palantir gets $10B contract from U.S. Army
There are stickers everywhere in my city against NATO. They say "food not weapons". As though the Ukrainians could defeat the Russians with pickles and ham. Left-wing idealism is grounded in denial of reality.
laurent_du··on Ask HN: What's your take on companies that send technical test before interview?
The vast majority of people who claim to be software engineer (or apply to similar position) have very limited skill. This has been proven countless times. I think it's completely fair to ask the candidate to show some level of ability. I did some interviewing a few years ago and I was shocked at the abysmal level of some people who have been in this industry for almost 10 years. So the resumé in itself is not really indicative of anything.
laurent_du··on Vibe code is legacy code
A friend of mine was doing modelling (as in, being a model) in a large European city. He then worked as a product manager for a well-known luxury company. He ended up writing a system in visual basic that was responsible for a large amount of internal plumbing. He had no experience in programming.
laurent_du··on Vibe code is legacy code
This is unironically the kind of project I love. My first job was a little bit like that, and I loved being the guy who was saving the day for everyone.
laurent_du··on You know what: Microsoft became miserably incompetent in IT
Yes, they are a life-saver. I use them all the time for various AWS accounts. The guy who told me about it years ago has saved me countless hours.
laurent_du··on ‘No Other Land’ consultant Awdah Hathaleen killed by Israeli settler
Nothing in the message you are answering suggests this is what they are talking about.
laurent_du··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
It's just your social circle. Everyone around me is vehemently anti-Palestine and pro-Israel. Friends, family, everyone.
laurent_du··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
I read this as well, and tried holding my breath (I can hold it for several minutes) while walking in the forest, and the mosquitoes still bit me.
laurent_du··on What even is 'adult' content? [NSFW]
I have never been in the US, and have been living in Finland for more than 15 years. Hilarious how wrong you are.
laurent_du··on What even is 'adult' content? [NSFW]
Let's be real, everyone feels nudity is inherently sexual, except on HN and probably on reddit where men love to claim that it's not. I don't know if it's virtue-signalling, sexual frustration, or something else. It does sound weird and creepy to me - grown up men who claim that naked women are not arousing, the same men who rally en masse every time pornography censorship is discussed, to complain about freedom of expression, when they are really just afraid they will lose the ability to stare at naked women having sex.

Another, more charitable, explanation, would be that a lot of people around here are asexual. It's possible - but to this extent? I am skeptical.

laurent_du··on What even is 'adult' content? [NSFW]
> The image attached to this blog post is a stock photo of a nude pregnant woman. Absolutely nothing sexual.

How is this not sexual? The fact that it's a stock photo, or that the woman is pregnant, is irrelevant. It's very clearly a sexual picture.

laurent_du··on Scientists may have found a way to eliminate chromosome linked to Down syndrome
It's no less arbitrary than deciding that gypsies, who engage in petty crime and mistreat their children, forcing them to become beggars and thieves themselves, should not reproduce. If anything, Down kids probably bring more good to society than gypsy kids. And forced sterilization is arguably more ethical than forced abortion. Same things goes for alcoholics and drug users. Privately, most people agree with this position. The idea that eugenics is inherently bad is very unsound and doesn't withstand scrutiny.
laurent_du··on Diet, not lack of exercise, drives obesity, a new study finds
At some point in my life I was eating 400g of nutella every day. I was also running 26km per day. I didn't get fat.
laurent_du··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
I am not implying, I am literally saying that. Obese people can easily live for six months to one year without suffering health issues. Gaza has a clean water problem, not a food problem. And what's the blatant lie? Gaza inhabitants are not suffering from obesity at incredibly high rates? Is Wikipedia lying about this? If you have credible figures indicating that Wikipedia is wrong on this matter, I would be very interested to see them and I would change my opinion on the "starvation" question immediately. I find it weird that you are immediately accusing me of lying instead of assuming that I am wrong in good faith, let alone thinking that you may in fact be wrong.
laurent_du··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
The obesity rate in Gaza is among the largest in the world. Let's stop pretending everyone is starving.
laurent_du··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
I fully believe that Gazans are starving, I just don't think it's Israel's fault. Hamas is stealing and withholding food, and other resources.
laurent_du··on AI could have written this: Birth of a classist slur in knowledge work [pdf]
It makes me sick to my heart to think that money is stolen from my pocket to be given to lunatics of this kind.
laurent_du··on Uv: Running a script with dependencies
I do this all the time as well with `uv run --with ipython --with boto3 ipython`. Great time-saver.
laurent_du··on Babies made using three people's DNA are born free of mitochondrial disease
Why is any of that a bad thing?
laurent_du··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025
They are not the same question, why are you spreading so much misinformed takes in this thread? I know a guy who had one of the best scores in history at IMO and he's incredibly intelligent. Stop repeating that getting a gold medal at IMO is a piece of cake - it's not.
laurent_du··on Felix Baumgartner, who jumped from stratosphere, dies in Italy
My son was literally asking me about him yesterday. Wonder how many kids think about him every day.
laurent_du··on Kiro: A new agentic IDE
You probably need an ad hoc MCP for this kind of things.
laurent_du··on Rules of good writing (2007)
Well he is certainly remembered by many.
laurent_du··on Cognitive ability, health policy, and the dynamics of Covid-19 vaccination
This is straight out of a Ryan Long standup. "Public health institutions prove that public health policies are better accepted by people whom public health institutions deem smarter." Sometimes reality does parody better than parody.
laurent_du··on Show HN: I AI-coded a tower defense game and documented the whole process
Very cool and I wish it lasted longer.
laurent_du··on The Zen of Quakerism (2016)
What if they are going to kill your child? I have zero respect for this kind of conviction.
laurent_du··on A short history of web bots and bot detection techniques
Does anyone know of a good reference on the topic of fingerprinting?
