laurent123456··on Why you should probably be using SQLite
Is that our monthly "you should always use SQLite except when you should not" article?
laurent123456··on Tell HN: Don't use Wise Business (TransferWise) to receive business payments
Did they give any explanation for this? That seems incredibly irresponsible especially for a so called "business" plan.
laurent123456··on Not setting up Find My bricked my MacBook
I'm surprised he didn't even try that. That's a brand new laptop - go to a store and have it replaced. Or if they won't do it because of this activation lock, then purposely break it and say it stopped working.
laurent123456··on HTTPie Desktop: cross-platform API testing client for humans
Nice, thanks for sharing your wisdom. And still insane they need that much money, we all have examples here of businesses that succeeded without having to raise millions of dollars
laurent123456··on HTTPie Desktop: cross-platform API testing client for humans
> $6.5M

I'm probably missing something, but it seems insane they need so much money to make (yet another) API testing client.

And I'm guessing it means the company is valued at x billion dollars

laurent123456··on Reversing 'France Identité': The New French Digital ID
One company doing everything would just incite them to charge whatever they want at the taxpayer expenses, and do the bare minimum since there would be no competition to drive them out of business.
laurent123456··on OnlyOffice: Free open source office suite with business productivity tools
When the US illegally invaded Iraq, if I remember well people's reaction was to rename French fries to Freedom fries. I don't remember any business condemning the war.
laurent123456··on Apache Open Office as an unmaintained project?
All these commits are so strange. They are all useless "clean up" commits yet they are not done by a bot, there's someone manually making these changes every few days, almost every day actually.

Don't know if he's really trying to make the project seem active, or trying to score a certain number of commits, or if he's just really passionate about cleaning up that codebase all by himself.

laurent123456··on What it takes to pass a file path to a Windows API in C++
Every time I created software for Windows in recent years I used Qt, WxWidgets or even Delphi, which all have wrappers to handle system-specific quirks. Is it common these days to code directly to the Windows API? It feels like it would lead to code that's harder to maintain and certainly less portable.
laurent123456··on Fx – Terminal JSON Viewer
It seems it would work since they release an npm package too: https://www.npmjs.com/package/fx

A bit surprising, I wonder if they implemented it in JS too, or somehow managed to distribute their Go program on npm.

Edit: They indeed have a separate non-interactive version in JS: https://github.com/antonmedv/fx/tree/master/npm

laurent123456··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
There's so many cereal options. It's easy to find some that are healthy, such as low sugar bran or wheat cereals.
laurent123456··on You're online all day. Why not use the browser to remind you of things?
I wonder how well this kind of app sells. It seems so useless to me (plenty of other calendar apps are free and with more features) but I guess there's someone out there who may be interested in it.
laurent123456··on Tails is a portable OS that protects against surveillance and censorship
They appear to support reproducible builds, which would make it a lot harder to sneak in surveillance software - https://tails.net/contribute/design/reproducibility/
laurent123456··on Kung-Fig, the configuration file format
This is from cronvel, the author of terminal-kit [0]. I've always liked how detailed and well thought-out this spec is, although I'm not sure anybody's using it.

laurent123456··on How Hinge's algorithm decides who you date
If you had read the article, you'd know the answer to your question:

> Rule breakers often make new accounts after an outright ban, so the subtle yet frustrating shadowban can be a better way to curb misbehavior.

laurent123456··on Tesla repossessed my car due to an extreme oversight on their end
> but what should Tesla have done differently?

They could start by not losing their customer's check, and then blaming the customer for it?

laurent123456··on Node.js 20.6.0 will include built-in support for .env files
Bloating runtimes seem like the wrong solution to this security issue though, and Node.js has security issues too. A lot of people don't ever need .env files, yet that will now be part of their deployment which will increase the attack surface of their application.
laurent123456··on Node.js 20.6.0 will include built-in support for .env files
Why would they add built-in support when there's already a reliable well-supported package? Feels like bloatware and waste of resources. I'm sure there are lots of core functionalities that could be improved and optimised instead
laurent123456··on My $0->$100M->$0 in 5 years story
It was making 7 figures and now it's worth $0? If the investments from VC didn't lead to anything, wouldn't the company still make 7 figures anyway and shouldn't it be possible to continue as it is?
laurent123456··on Uninstall the NightOwl app
I think it starts with passion - he created some useful software, he shares it and initially enjoy working on it. Then he puts a donate link (I saw there was a donate link in the previous site), and gets almost nothing, but he still needs to add bug fixes, maybe new features, answer to the user's emails, etc.

After a while it becomes a chore... and still getting $0 out of it. And that's when he might want to find other ways to get something out of the efforts he put in. Unfortunately the only option is to turn it into malware since nobody wants to pay for it, or turn it into a decent profitable business.

laurent123456··on Uninstall the NightOwl app
Sure but they probably won't offer that much. What I mean is that the value of this app, despite being free, is not zero, but that's probably what the developer was getting. So even if he got 10K for it, he's happy and moved on.
laurent123456··on Uninstall the NightOwl app
If the developer is well paid, probably not? Why would they throw away what they built for a lump sum if they have decent side-business and recurrent revenues?
laurent123456··on Uninstall the NightOwl app
That's the problem with free apps. Very few people want to donate, no decent company is interested in buying the app and making it profitable, so all that's left are the worst kind of companies who buy these extensions and apps to exploit the users.

All these free apps have value but unfortunately it doesn't translate to any income for the developer so they find other ways.

laurent123456··on Longest-lasting incandescent light bulbs
The world's longest-lasting light bulb website is also from another time: https://www.centennialbulb.org/

Unfortunately it looks like they took down the webcam, which is what I was looking for

laurent123456··on Beaver Notes: A Privacy-Focused Open-Source Note-Taking App
Weird to start a project in js instead of TypeScript these days. That doesn't give a good feeling about his privacy-focused app which will probably have plenty of subtle bugs and security holes.
laurent123456··on Polar v1.0: Let’s Fix Open Source Funding
What's different from the other crowdsourcing platforms for open source?
laurent123456··on We spent $20k on Google Play pre-registration ads
With 17,000+ pre-registrations, it sounds like their ad campaign wasn't well targeted either. You can get a ton of people visiting your app page but if it's done based on vague or generic keywords, the clicks you get won't mean much.

Seems a bit crazy to spend that much without any cap for a small indie company too. If the app is any good, you can always run more ad campaigns after the launch.

laurent123456··on GitHub profile achievements
The "This is fine" achievement is funny but doesn't seem right. The top user ppdemo indeed has a repo where he apparently creates one issue every minute, but there's only a few open issues so he must be deleting them too:

https://github.com/pddemo/demo

laurent123456··on Pocket gets worse the more you use it (2019)
Joplin has a web clipper, so it can be used as "read it later" tool
laurent123456··on Joplin – An open-source note taking and to-do application with synchronisation
Not sure why "refused". We want to support it but it's not trivial and it doesn't help that we don't have the hardware to test this. It will be done eventually
