larrled··on End of an Era: Landsat 7 Decommissioned After 25 Years of Earth Observation
Maybe it could be a boon to the sentinel program in the same way as the current administration strengthened the European defense posture, by weakening our own. If that happens it could actually be good, because America military will no doubt spend as much as it can on science as soon as they get debt back under control. Sadly that seems like it won’t happen in 2025, but with enough growth maybe by 2030 we’ll be back, and better.

Most innovation is military innovation, if only by proxy.
larrled··on If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued
Can’t be undervalued if you aren’t actually useful for anything. Therefore, value correlates with uselessness, moderated by uniqueness. Generic uselessness is still low value due to supply/demand.

If there is no tpm then it’s not secure I assume is what is meant by not “fully supported.” You can do it, but it’s on you if you get bootkitty.

Toxic people and environments are not uncommon. It sounds like you’ve not experienced that too much, which is good. But there are sociopaths, liars, ladder climbers, manipulators, narcissists, and lots of other imperfect people who care more about their own title and compensation than the product or coworker harmony. As an autistic person, you might invest in learning how to spot such people to protect yourself.

Good advice. Psychological transference is a closely related term. But it’s easy to take that framework too far and eventually get to where you blame things like schizophrenia or ptsd on the mothers. People who grew up in shitty families probably have plenty of insight already. A lot of human behavior is determined rather than the result of free will. If you had a bad mom, it may be better to just lower expectations than try to “fix”yourself and become the CEO. And taking drugs like ssri or adderal helps many in their careers where psychotherapy might not. Freud loved cocaine.
larrled··on Doge cuts to USAid blamed for 300k deaths – most of them children
I don’t think enormous fraud has been uncovered. The argument, I don’t buy personally, is that the only way to reform such a beast is to kill it and start over with a totally new entity. Other than thousands of deaths now and downstream geopolitical instability threatening more in the future, we’ll have to wait and see if this will help with the budget deficit as promised by the paragon of credibility Elon Musk.

So all in on the DOGE cuts then?

OMB got hacked years ago by the Chinese. Access to our systems and data by Xi/Putin is very pre-DOGE. Maybe they made it less secure, say from not very secure to super not very secure. I’d be willing to believe that, but the claimant has to first admit the systems are already open to foreigner influence/domestic spies.
larrled··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
“from losing all your income until you're homeless.”

I’m willing to bet you haven’t lived long enough to know that’s a more or less a proxy for old age. :) That aside, even homeless people acquire possessions over time. If you have a lot of homeless in your neighborhood, try to observe that. In my area, many homeless have semi functional motor homes. Are they legit homeless, or are they “homeless oligarchs”? I can watch any of the hundreds of YouTube channels devoted to “van life.” Is a 20 year old who skipped college which their family could have afforded, and is instead living in an $80k van and getting money from streaming a “legit homeless”? The world is not so black and white it will turn out in the long run.

Biden credited the inflation to Putin, claiming that 70% was due to Putin’s price hikes.

That was not entirely true.

Trump’s pandemic spending (lockdowns, vaccines…), and subsequently Biden’s, but most importantly the curiously named Inflation Reduction Act were obvious drivers. You can’t stimulate an already overheated economy to the tune of 2 trillion without getting Larry Summers a bit worked up.

No, older people aren’t greedy. They are insecure about their age and doing things they perceive younger more successful people as doing reduces their existential angst and fear of mortality. Wanting to live and be loved is also not greed. The actual flaw is a society that permits crypto currency, and encourages trade and globalization at any cost. Gotta give all the elderly 5g cell phones and Facebook accounts, and be saddened when millions of Indian scammers reach out and touch someone.
larrled··on Texas' annual reading test adjusted difficulty yearly, masking improvement
“What still isn’t known

I plan to investigate if other states or the federal government use similarly designed tests to evaluate students.”

This person doesn’t seem to have any understanding of the topic area she apparently lectures her students about. Scary.

In education, nothing is ever good enough.
larrled··on Why AI hasn't taken your job – And any jobs-pocalypse seems a long way off
You can’t build a business on scaling out the hiring 1000s of AI experts. You only need so many, which is why they get higher salaries. There will never be an infosys or tata for such workers like there was for many of us mere coders. Infosys and tata will likely benefit, but their average worker will not.
larrled··on Good Writing
If I am drunk, or have brain damage, my ideas will be bad and so is my writing.

It’s not about what makes writing good. It’s about what makes it bad. People don’t agree on good writing.

I think Paul is talking more about not bad writing. Otherwise, he’d be talking about poetry, which also asserts truth and style as inseparable. People disagree about poetry. Most people agree Paul is a good (not bad) writer, not a poet.

Are you becoming dependent? Everything that helps also hurts, psychologically speaking. For example benzodiazepines in the long run are harmful. Or the opposite, insight therapy, which involves some amount of pain in the near term in order to achieve longer term improvement.
