lapphi··on LLMs and the End of Programming – CS50 Tech Talk with Dr. Matt Welsh [video]
69 years ago this would have sparked hope in the people. But now we know better than to assume technological progress equals societal progress. To me, that’s the sad part.

San in berlin does this. Im surprised at how many users on hn have never experienced or even heard of the practice considering the average income of the group.
lapphi··on Albert Einstein in 1939 composed a message for the people of AD 6939
True but in the context of the quote I don’t think Einstein would have viewed them as people that made valuable contributions to society. Probably would have placed them in the former category, honestly.

The firehose of the internet has been a boon for Putin in this way

Yep that’s covered in the video if you watch the whole thing
lapphi··on Was Atlantis a Minoan Civilization on Santorini Island?
The way things are going, history may see you as the Nostradamus of this century.
lapphi··on The five filters of the mass media
I would assume it’s because he does not have the following to create any real issues. How many views do his videos/other works get compared to someone like Mr Beast or Joe Rogan? It’s that scene in Jurassic park. The general concept of intellectualism is derided by the public (I would argue precisely for the reasons outlined in the post) so it’s particularly necessary to single out chomsky and turn him into a martyr.

For anyone curious as to why crime in Russia seems to be so ingrained into the culture, this lecture from a finnish intelligence officer is quite informative. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kF9KretXqJw
lapphi··on Admin unmasks self as sockpuppet of other admin who was banned in 2015
It’s interesting to me how many online people seem to not understand the implications of this sort of stuff on an intuitive level. Maybe I am the paranoid type but once something goes public these days it’s basically available to anyone in the present and future forever. “Anyone” being state actors like you mentioned down to bored teenagers looking for fun. As the ability to capture our data evolves our autonomy is being eroded, grain by grain.
lapphi··on Is there anywhere in the world someone can just live for free?
I mean if you lucked out and were born wealthy in an urban area it was probably ok.

But half the population lived in urban areas and only half of those people had electricity. So 50:50 you end up on Schrute Farms with no electricity and an outhouse.

Not even mentioning race here.

lapphi··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
Yes but that data never gets deleted really. So going forward you’ll have like profiles that are decades old and still available for analysis. For instance if you have depression they could show you ads for Prozac. Then if you get married and have kids, they know that your children are probably more prone to depression. Oh, and you live in a rural area and occasionally hunt. So your kid is now on some list. Or the other way, your kids phone gets sent ads from prager u. These are far fetched examples but 30 years from it’s absolutely within the realm of possibility. We only keep adding to the mountain with devices like the Apple Watch.

Upon logging into okcupid today I received a pop up inviting me to join The League (another dating app), with my phone number already pre-propagated. After accepting, they sent me this email.

> We use the combination of your Facebook and LinkedIn data plus your About Me and Photos to ensure we are building a balanced, high-achieving and diverse community. Our screening algorithm looks at indicators like social influence, education, profession, industry, friends in The League, number of referrals you've made to your network, as well as supplemental data like what groups you belong to, events you've attended, interests you list, and preferences.

Absolutely terrifying.

lapphi··on McKinsey to pay $573M to settle claims over opioid crisis role: source
> Most of the money will go to government programs fighting opioid addiction and providing treatment, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein said Thursday. The company helped “turbocharge” opioid sales for 15 years while consulting for Purdue and its billionaire owners, the Sackler family, Stein said.

15 years of work must have cost more than $1M

lapphi··on Facebook is bombarding rightwing users with combat gear ads. See for yourself
It’s bombarding me with body armor ads too. I’ve never searched for or talked about guns, qanon, or election stuff on my fb browser. Not sure this is specific to one political group.
lapphi··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
It would be foolish of Amazon’s legal team to make an argument like they did and not be able to back it up with proof, imo.
lapphi··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
If Silk Road (and its spawn) manage to stay online until the government shuts them down then these more-legal companies can surely find a way.
lapphi··on Inside Patreon, the economic engine of internet culture
It seems like you're claiming the success of Patreon is due to its support of the concept of "Free Speech", and by not allowing certain groups to use their website as a platform to spread their message (for example, hate speech), they're in violation of their founding principles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it up to them who they want to do business with? What is the obligation this non-governmental entity has to act as host?

In a sense, wouldn't forcing Patreon to be open to all (again including groups with a message of hate and inciting violence) be a violation of their rights?

lapphi··on Digital coins may be on the verge of going mainstream
At least it's nonviolent, compared to some fiat currencies.
