lanthade··on Old Online Chevy Manuals
I sent this to my uncle who has a few old Chevys. He said it’s been around a while (shows in the design) and that apparently a lot of the content was scanned in my a guy working out on an oil rig in the ocean. I guess something to do when you’re really really bored.
lanthade··on U.S. Internet leaked years of internal, customer emails
As a USI fiber customer (which has been a great service) the most concerning thing to me about the CEO response is that he didn’t know who he was talking to and then asked about hiring them. Considering that Krebs On Security is no small player or recent arrival to the scene this is a huge blunder. I know you can’t expect a CEO to know in depth all things but there should be people right under him who could have brought him up to speed quick. This is a technology company after all, not some simple widget maker.
lanthade··on Apple has not fixed the macOS audio left/right balance bug for nearly 10 years
Apple audio issues are definitely nothing new. I recall as far back as the early 00’s problems with stereo separation on apple laptops. This was especially apparent when playing backing tracks out the headphone port where it was a mono tracks/click pair. The click could be clearly heard on the tracks line which is a bad thing for the house mix. That particular problem was hardware though. If you used an external usb interface the problem went away.
lanthade··on Billion file filesystem
Back in the late 2000’s I was a windows clustering SME for a major tech company on account with a major financial company. One project I was tasked with was migrating a system which had a huge number of small files. I don’t recall the number. IIRC it took a couple weeks to do the initial file copy. Then the task was to sync the changes during the change window which was 8 hours. Every time I tried to sync the changes it took well more than 8 hours.

I did find a tool that could do the job but of course no one wanted to pay for it. Fortunately for me I left that position before the migration and someone else had to figure it out.

So yeah, I’ve encountered something similar in the real world. It was the result of poor software design choices but by the time I got there that path was chosen and I had to deal with the results.
