lanius··on Eat, Drink and Be Wary: Ex-CIA Officer Reveals How Eateries Are Key to Spycraft
Also known as "ninja-proof seats"
lanius··on Show HN: Bel
>I wonder if Bill Gates ever codes anything anymore, I emailed to him ask once but never got a reply.

He does (at least as of 2013): https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/18bhme/im_bill_gates_...

lanius··on Show HN: Shiori v1.5 – Self hosted bookmarks manager, now with archival support
Looks great! Is there something similar for Pinboard?
lanius··on Color Emulation
Do "official" emulators handle these details? E.g., SNES games in Nintendo Switch Online
lanius··on Daytripper
Good luck if you're in an open office!
lanius··on How Diablo Was Reverse-Engineered Without Source Code [video]
Retro Game Mechanics Explained is also very good. The creator is anonymous AFAIK but the quality is top-notch.

lanius··on Upzoning will ease housing affordability problems
What are the arguments against calories in/calories out? Do critics believe that they will not lose weight on a caloric deficit?
lanius··on IT Runs on Java 8
Is the story about Tesla's infrastructure true? I seem to remember it was posted before, and the consensus then was that it was a great work of fiction.
lanius··on I found two identical packs of Skittles among 468 packs
What's the likelihood of getting a potato chip bag with only one chip?
lanius··on A List of Hacker News's Undocumented Features and Behaviors
HN should update its color scheme. I use a quality IPS monitor with color calibration, and those comments are still hard to read.
lanius··on Tarrare
Sounds like he had an extremely high resting metabolic rate. Any similar modern medical examples?
lanius··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
Those aren't worker rushes.

NaNiwa in the 2011 GSL Blizzard Cup https://liquipedia.net/starcraft2/NaNiwa%27s_Blizzard_Cup_Co...
lanius··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
Worker rushing is pretty much a guaranteed losing strategy. One progamer who did it in competition was criticized for being disrespectful toward his opponent and viewers and lost his tournament seed as a result.
lanius··on Anker PowerPort PD 1 USB-C Wall Charger Teardown
Is USB-IF certification any guarantee of quality?
lanius··on Tech company patterns
Is your screen calibrated? I had the same issue (especially with HN) before adjusting my monitor.
lanius··on ASRock motherboard destroys Linux software RAID
This is very discouraging to hear, especially since I'm currently choosing a motherboard for a new PC build. Is there any good way to determine the quality of motherboard firmware? Are there any recommended vendors?
lanius··on I Found the Best Burger Place in America, Then I Killed It
Are there similar stories of promising tech companies that achieved overnight fame but couldn't handle it and shut down?
lanius··on Mystery Math Whiz and Novelist Advance Permutation Problem
I can think of at least one prominent mathematician and anime fan who might've written that anonymous proof.
lanius··on Redefining the Kilogram
>it is roughly five parts in 100 million heavier than all the working standards, which have been leaving behind a few atoms of metal every time they are put on scales

Are the working copies really only shedding such a small number of atoms per use? Just seems like it should be a higher number.

lanius··on Perceptual Illusions
Seems like the human perceptual system is easily hacked. I wonder how close we can get to an actual Snow Crash bitmap?
lanius··on A Dark Consensus About Screens and Kids Begins to Emerge in Silicon Valley
I partially agree. You can achieve a decent rank solely through good mechanics (APM, mouse accuracy, etc). However, strategy is definitely important at the higher levels of competition.
lanius··on The Intl.RelativeTimeFormat API
I understand the value of relative times, but I wish websites that use these would show the original timestamps as well. That includes you, Hacker News!
lanius··on Intel 9th Gen Review
StarCraft 2
lanius··on Paul Allen has died
Wow, I didn't know Paul Allen played guitar! I wonder if this is a theme among Microsoft executives? Jim Allchin is also a very good blues guitarist.
lanius··on Games Today Shut the Door to Tomorrow’s Devs
Warcraft 3 modding is what got me interested in programming in the first place. I made a handful of somewhat popular custom maps, and having a forum where players could report bugs or suggestions gave me great insight into understanding the user perspective.
lanius··on Doctors warn of alarming C-section 'epidemic'
I'm surprised C-section rates are higher among wealthier, education women. I would assume educated women are more likely to understand the risks associated with C-sections.
lanius··on U.S. Robocall Data
I've been receiving significantly more robocalls recently, and this data backs it up. I'm not even sure why they bother. They never leave voicemails, and on the few occasions I actually pick up, I just get silence on the other end.
lanius··on Street View of 1980s New York
Very cool! Is there anything similar for other cities?
lanius··on Reboot Your Dreamliner Every 248 Days to Avoid Integer Overflow (2015)
Yikes. I'm not a prepper, but there is something to be said for older vehicles without this unnecessary computer nonsense.
