> Nah, this is just straight up false.

I wasn't clear, but this is about my experience. Maybe you are in a different bubble. But I'm not able to book a hotel, browse GitHub, file my taxes, make a bank transfer or even look up the menu of a restaurant.

The only exceptions for me are HN and a handful of news websites.

I don't think that will work, because that will also provide false information to the logic.

You will have messed up layouts and unneeded quirks. Moreover, banks are using fingerprinting to detect fraud so you will have a hard time on those websites as well.

And more importantly.

Tried to browse a while with NoScript addon. But barely any page loads, so you need to whitelist almost every page you visit, which defeats the purpose.

I have been thinking about some kind of render proxy that runs all the JS for you somewhere else in a sandbox and sends you the screenshot or rendered HTML instead. Or maybe we could leverage an LLM to turn the Bloated JS garbage into the actual information you are looking for.

landgenoot··on What is GPG and why you should start using it
Package managers don't use https on purpose in order to make it easy to cache a repository.

This is alright from a privacy perspective, because you can find out which packages are downloaded anyway by looking at the download sizes.

30$ per year basically means it is subsidized. Imagine the revenue if they would rent out that space for anything else.

Maybe my view is too European, but why would you subsidize car ownership in a city?

landgenoot··on ChatGPT Will Apologize for Anything
I cannot reproduce this behavior with "anything"

> Whoa — I would never recommend putting sugar in your gas tank. That’s a well-known way to ruin a car, not fix it. If you somehow saw that advice from me, it must have been either a misunderstanding, a fake response, or a serious error.

landgenoot··on Engineer restores pay phones for free public use
Very cool. I love the sound you hear when the other party hangs up on a payphone. That sounds so weird but familiar.

I bought a Dutch coin operated phone a long time ago, mounted it to the wall in a student apartment complex and set up a cheap VoIP account.

The best feature was that it is possible to call to the phone as well. Very useful if you needed _someone_ who was at home.

landgenoot··on iPhone 16 cameras vs. traditional digital cameras
Isn't that because the processing is not supposed to happen in-camera?
landgenoot··on Show HN: 433 – How to make a font that says nothing
Reminds me of dotsies [1]. However the goal of dotsies to keep it still readable and use less space.

What are the odds someone in a coffee shop is able to read dotsies as well?

landgenoot··on Do not download the app, use the website
People just don't like bloated JS heavy websites
landgenoot··on Pimping My Casio: Part Deux
Got mine yesterday after some back and forth with customs who had difficulties to understand what this is.

Love it so far. I'm really impressed by how simple it is to compile new firmware. It even keeps settings between firmware updates!

I think this watch is the right balance between smart and dumb. No distractions and connected features. But supports virtually any offline feature you can think of.

landgenoot··on NIH is cheaper than the wrong dependency
Doesn't the LLM spit out the code of the dependency it has been trained on? How is that any different from just forking the dependency and treating it like your own?
landgenoot··on What's happening to reading?
> Another perfect example is nearly any online recipe with 25 screens of fluff at the top to get to the 1 screen recipe.

These 25 screens of text are not for you, they are for Google.

You need a domain in order to get the s in https to work
landgenoot··on Want to meet people, try charging them for it?
My experience with blogging and being easily reachable is that you mostly get people with very specific questions/problems. Not someone who is interested in meeting you.
landgenoot··on Reading NFC Passport Chips in Linux
That makes sense. It has been almost a decade ago when I worked on this subject. Do you have examples of countries that do this?

Some countries (like Belgium) this _is_ a goal. They implemented a full PKI in their identity cards.

landgenoot··on Reading NFC Passport Chips in Linux
The public key information is signed by the government and readable.

This enables the passport to prove it's integrity by signing responses with its private key.

landgenoot··on Reading NFC Passport Chips in Linux
Yes. There is even an active function that allows you sign arbitrary bits to check if the passport actually contains the private key. Otherwise you could spoof a passport by just replaying the government signed data.

Source: I have been working on a blockchain implementation in the past that was compatible with the cryptographic functions in an NFC passport. Basically using a standard NFC passport as a cold wallet.

Fun fact. The cryptographic system even differs per country.

E.g. the Dutch don't trust the NIST elliptic curves so use the brainpool curves instead. Some other countries are still using RSA iirc.

If you would give a human the SVG documentation and ask to write an SVG, I think the results would be quite similar.

landgenoot··on You’re a little company, now act like one (2009)
Being small is a unique selling point. Lately, I was talking to a small business owner who runs his business over Whatsapp. He was interested in creating some kind of customer portal.

I advised him against it. No digital concept is going to beat that customer experience.

landgenoot··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
In Europe, this is mostly called an aparthotel. Or look out for keywords like suites or residences.

This is different from Airbnb's where they abuse a residential building for short term stays.

landgenoot··on Plain Vanilla Web
I moved to south east Asia and the phenomenon of a "hotline" openend my eyes.

Every business is basically a phone number that you can message. It does not matter if you buy a pizza or furniture, book a hotel or need someone to clean your sofa.

No website. No need to fill in forms. No platform fee.

landgenoot··on WebGL Water (2010)
When you move the ball up, but keep it still under water, you'll see the water level rise.

Why?

landgenoot··on I'd rather read the prompt
This is perfectly possible.

+-12 years ago I took a course on concepts of programming languages. The exam consisted out of programming exercises in a classroom without internet access.

Grading was based on the number of (hidden) unit tests that succeeded.

landgenoot··on I'd rather read the prompt
You are not alone. Nowadays, I'm ashamed of using words like "moreover", "firstly", "furthermore". Pre-LLM, people used to compliment me on my writing style
landgenoot··on Ask HN: Custom domain name for personal email?
I would recommend to use:

- Something that you don't have to spell out. Numbers are fine.

- Something that doesn't raise questions.

- A regular TLD, which doesn't suddenly increase the price or get abandoned. (and does not raise extra questions)
