I like functional programming and red-headed comedians.

Yes, if I remember correctly, any n-ary number system is equivalent and you can translate any proof between them. It's just easier to work in one or another system.
lambda_obrien··on Amazon S3 Object Lambda
S3 is basically a database. You can store everything there and interact with it via SQL with Athena, for example. I could see utilizing all of Amazon's "infinitely scalable" services to build very simple and powerful software really easily.
lambda_obrien··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
Frankly, I hate dealing with tech outside of work and I would have to pihole my TV.
lambda_obrien··on Tesla's “full self driving” beta is potentially dangerous
In many places it's considered parking, legally, anytime you stop and place the car in park.
lambda_obrien··on Tesla's “full self driving” beta is potentially dangerous
It's not common for it to be legal except in very specific situations. I don't know if it's American, but they do it here a lot in dense cities for deliveries. It's not a true parking, like for hours, it's for running in and out.
lambda_obrien··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
No, literally youtube had ads which just said things like, "does your kid hate it when youtube has commercials? Does it annoy you when they scream because of that? Pay us to remove them!"

It works be one thing to advertise a service or product, but they just put ads in to literally annoy you into paying. I'm not kidding.

I WAS a YouTube premium member until recently, but dropped it because of crap like this.

I know there's no free lunch, my comment was about the way youtube does business: it's a dick move to annoy users into paying you. How is that worth a tnstaafl reply?

I wonder if the world has passed me by when I think that I'm taking a stand against corporate greed and bullshit and everyone else happily goes along with whatever.

lambda_obrien··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
I would pay, except youtube had these ads that are like, " hate being annoyed by ads? Pay us!"

Fuck youtube.

lambda_obrien··on We found and fixed a rare race condition in our session handling
The personal data itself should not be logged but the event itself should be logged with lots of details that aren't private info.
lambda_obrien··on We found and fixed a rare race condition in our session handling
I'm guessing that's sarcasm, I edited my comment.
lambda_obrien··on We found and fixed a rare race condition in our session handling
Always log important events with a timestamp and save them as long as possible.

It saved me more than once in similar situations with several threads.

And why should the home I paid for be auctioned by the government? How is that fair for anyone but the wealthy? You're saying that only the rich can stay in one place, everyone else has to move to the middle of no where or risk losing it all to said rich folk who will buy my property at auction by the government.

Seems silly to me.

lambda_obrien··on All 5000 Images in Beeple’s $69M Magnum Opus:What I Found Isn’t So Pretty
What I'm saying is this specific article seemed to be trying to point at the pieces which could be seen as racist or sexist or whatever. I'm saying this is art and saying it sucks is one thing, but this is another kind of takedown, to me. I have no dog in the show, so I don't care personally, but it's interesting that this guy was so revered at first and now he's getting pummeled.

I think maybe you just zoomed in on the word cancel, but I didn't even say anything negative about cancel culture, which you seem to want to defend, so don't bother here, I was commenting on the meteoric rise and fall of beeple, not on the act of cancelling or anything. Chill.

lambda_obrien··on Visa Plans to Enable Bitcoin Payments at 70M Merchants
That's one way to look at it, sure. Another is that it's the wild west and normal people will get bankrupt.
lambda_obrien··on All 5000 Images in Beeple’s $69M Magnum Opus:What I Found Isn’t So Pretty
Only in 2021 can a man go from art sensation to what appears to be on his way to being cancelled inn like 3 days.

I don't care, personally, but man oh man this year isn't gonna be much more normal than last.

I actually think it's interesting to see his advances in skill, not bad for effectively a satire artist.

So by your accounting, if I purchase a home in Stockton, CA right now, then in 40 years when I'm old and can't afford the taxes on my lifelong home because Stockton is huge then, I'm to be kicked out for a more productive use?

And people here wonder why I think weapons research is immoral! It's because it doesn't just stay a military weapon.

If you research weapons, they'll be used on innocents, no matter what. Your research into targeted weapons or less than lethal turns into your neighbor's problem later.

lambda_obrien··on When Should I Interrupt Someone?
That's pretty much me, I told my wife if I put up the finger to wait and try again in 15 minutes, unless it's my son's daiper or whatever, then I'll happily take the loss of context.

I also found that functional programming, types or type annotations, and writing very small functions glued together by longer functions helps to reduce cognitive load when solving problems. Then I can add comments to literally bracket the area I am searching for the problem or solution and slowly move them closer together as I rule out functions and stuff.

It's a video game, so maybe give them some slack. We're not talking a SolarWinds breach here.

> There are a lot of objections to working outside of work, even if that work is for yourself. Many of them are valid. I only write for people like me, who have the energy and desire to make this work but have been lacking a guide.

I thought this would be yet more hustle porn, but I appreciate the care that the author put into this so as to not pressure those of us who just have zero energy to have a side project, even when we desperately want to. There's more after this quote that really hit home, and made me actually bookmark this for the day I have some energy to create again.

lambda_obrien··on Why are most climate models in Fortran?
It's hard enough to understand a codebase, but if a language was like Haskell for instance (you can enable certain extensions in Haskell with a flag at the top of a file), you could have a line at the top of a file defining that this file is 0 based, while maybe the default is 1 based for the language. It doesn't seem like that much more than you already have to consider in many languages.
lambda_obrien··on Security.txt

lambda_obrien··on Israel's autonomous 'robo-snipers' and suicide drones raise ethical dilemma
Moral would be not killing other humans for power, resources, etc. I'm comfortable with my beliefs, and I understand your position as well. I personally understand the need for a military, but there are some weapons I wouldn't have been comfortable using when I was a military officer. Luckily, I have no part in those decisions today and I can share my beliefs without any risk to anyone else, "enemy" or otherwise.
lambda_obrien··on GitHub no longer supports this web browser
I run NoScript and I basically only browse hn these days, literally. Half the links here don't work, either, so I usually don't even read those. Twitter is a wasteland for me. I've accepted it, and I enjoy being an antisocial technophobic software engineer. I'm even thinking about only using electronics for work. I'm sick of the internet today, I feel like it only tears people apart.
lambda_obrien··on Israel's autonomous 'robo-snipers' and suicide drones raise ethical dilemma
That's the exist everyone gives: "everybody else is doing it"

It's still immoral.

lambda_obrien··on Israel's autonomous 'robo-snipers' and suicide drones raise ethical dilemma
I think researching this stuff today is pretty immoral. If you're creating shit like this, you're inventing the next land mine. Stop it.
lambda_obrien··on Why are most climate models in Fortran?
I don't get why a language can't have both 0 and 1 based indexing, just set it as a compiler flag or something. They are a homomorphism, it's not hard to add or subtract one.
