lake_vincent··on Psychedelics: A Personal Take (2021)
It is legal in the US state of Oregon, and I think maybe one or two others I can't recall. You start by finding a doctor who specializes in the therapeutic use of psychedelics, and giving them a call! Watch How to Change your Mind by Michael Pollan.

Be safe, be smart, and consult a professional. I don't recommend doing it "street-style" where you buy it off the black market and take it at a rave :)

lake_vincent··on Google Hangouts is no longer be available
It is be like that sometimes
lake_vincent··on How we detect, remove and report child sexual abuse material
Yeah, and I'd also throw a few three-letter-agencies' hats in the ring, like the NSA. Would be a serious competition.

But I think we all know who the true winner is: Vladimir Putin. His personal stash has petabytes of material.

lake_vincent··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Not saying it's necessarily a bad thing. It is that idealistic thinking that got us SpaceX and all that, so clearly the visionary aspect of his thinking is great, but it is a double edged sword. He thinks free speech is a problem he can solve solve, but I am saying that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. He is smart, but clumsy, and I seriously question his motives.
lake_vincent··on How we detect, remove and report child sexual abuse material
When you put it that way, it is extremely disturbing to think that, statistically speaking, the largest consumer of child abuse material in the world might very well be Google (and/or Apple, for their version of the tech).
lake_vincent··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Oh that's what I mean - he will enforce his own definition of free speech and censorship. It will be usual "Rules for thee but not for me" kinda thing. It will be a constantly shitfing goalpost, and he will always have some bullshit justification for why whatever he decides is correct. It won't be free speech, it will be Elon speech. He is a petulant child with too much money, and not enough humility. His sink stunt tells you everything you need to know - this is all about Elon. God help us all.
lake_vincent··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Well, speaking in those terms, I think the thing to watch will in fact be censorship. Elon is extremely idealistic, so it will be fascinating to watch him melt down when confronted with the reality of how complex free speech and censorship issues really are. I predict that he will succeed in turning Twitter into the rightwing safehaven that "Truth" Social, Parlor, etc have all been trying to become.

He's making a deal with the devil to fund Twitter, and if that means selling out to guys like Peter Thiel and other conservative power brokers, then he will do it. Just in time for the 2024 presidential election media cycle too...What could possibly go wrong?

lake_vincent··on My dad's resume and skills from 1980
Woah, that is way more insidious than I was expecting. I get what you mean now, and that just seems really stupid on the recruiter's part. Doesn't it come out during the interview process if there's BS on the resume?

But I'm guessing that's your point, right? Because the hiring manager should notice, and the interview process should screen for it, so this must be a symptom of much larger scale dysfunction in the tech recruiting/hiring space.

lake_vincent··on My dad's resume and skills from 1980
This is interesting...what do you suspect is behind this? Do recruiters just tell candidates "Hey, make sure to put FOOlang on your resume before you apply to this job."
lake_vincent··on We're Drowning
Just a quick shout-out to Python Poetry (https://python-poetry.org/) which makes package, version, and virtual environment management extremely simple!

I love it so much that I can't imagine having to work on a python project without Poetry now, lol.

lake_vincent··on Brave browser now blocks cookie banners
I am all for a business model that has an opt-in feature that generates revenue. I love Brave, and want to stick around, so I have no moral qualms with them making some money. I personally opt out, but I am grateful for those who use it. Their crypto system itself is quite benign - I tried it, and it required no investment on my part, so I don't understand where the "scam" is you speak of...
lake_vincent··on Inside the Proton
Plot twist: protons are cosmic k8s!
lake_vincent··on Microsoft Full Circle
Just wanna add that WSL(2) is one the best things Microsoft has ever done, and has opened up Windows as a true developer's OS. The universality is amazing, and now I feel like I can truly use almost any piece of software OR hardware I can dream of (short of MacOS exclusive software, which is mostly creative media stuff anyway).
lake_vincent··on Nord Stream blast 'blew away 50 metres of pipe'
Indeed it is.
lake_vincent··on Nord Stream blast 'blew away 50 metres of pipe'
Eh, I don't think Putin himself is the mastermind. He just bullies his underlings into figuring out how to actually do things, and throws tantrums when he doesn't get what he wants. Like Trump, he really just seems like a big evil baby, and I highly doubt he pulls his weight in any kind of strategic planning that requires true brain power. He's not even a good orator, or creative liar. He literally just says the opposite of the truth, which makes him easy to figure out in a way.

He has only one skill, like the orange man, and that is demanding personal enrichment at all costs. He is, at the end of the day, just another basic KGB neanderthal.

lake_vincent··on Nord Stream blast 'blew away 50 metres of pipe'
That's a great point, and therefore leads me to believe it was a pro-Ukranian force because if it were Russia, they would have blown it up inside Ukraine so they could then blame Ukraine for it. Putin really is not that bright, so it is unlikely he would think it through any further than that.
lake_vincent··on Hacker And The Fed
Like the other commenter said, it's the podcast part that I find funny. A hacker and special agent, natural enemies, becoming BFF'S and making a podcast together sounds like the premise of a Netflix show, hence the Oniony nature of the headline
lake_vincent··on Ask HN: What are the best general math workbooks?
The Art of Problem Solving!!!

Cannot recommend highly enough. Comprehensive, rigorous, and well written. Amazing community around them too. Can take you all the way to the IMO, if you want.

lake_vincent··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
Awesome work my friend!
lake_vincent··on Framework Laptops Now Offering Refurbished Products
Honestly, I thought the same thing, but I am an extremely happy Framework v2 owner, and I don't miss the extra real estate. I have multiple external monitors for when I am coding at home, and don't mind the small screen when I'm not at my workstation. It's so light and portable too, it's easy to pick up and move with one hand. I adore my Framework laptop. I've got Windows 11 running WSL2 on it, and for me it is the ultimate dev workstation.

I totally understand where you are coming from though, as I really was in the same boat. YMMV, of course.

lake_vincent··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
It's definitely a bad strat for finding love, but not bad for finding company lol.
lake_vincent··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
I mean, in a way yes. For example, super easy to delete your account. No dark patterns or hoops to jump through. Also, the profiles themselves are pretty minimal - they are like ads, and are practically disposable as such. Once I got what I came for, I just threw it out.
lake_vincent··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
Yeah, that sounds about right. I am actually single again (ha...), so the quality of the match is not gonna be as deep as a compatability based algo like OKC - Hinge profiles are relatively shallow, and hard to get right. It's much better for getting laid, not finding the love of your life.

I don't plan on returning to any apps, because the whole experience feels dehumanizing, and I'm looking for something enduring now.

lake_vincent··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
Their motto is that their app is "meant to be deleted." They don't want to you stay on it, but they DO want you to tell all your single friends about it.

Hinge's free tier is absolutely excellent and I have gotten multiple dates, as well as a girlfriend, without paying a cent.

What's the catch, you may ask? As with most dating apps, let's just say that if you don't have a "highly competitive" profile, you will struggle if you don't pay for high-volume swiping.

lake_vincent··on Private Prisons Are Behind the Push for Homeless Criminalization
Lol right? If you're gonna say something 20 times, clearly economy of words is not your priority, so might as well define the damn thing.
lake_vincent··on Ask HN: How do developers in low-wage countries view Open Source?
My speculative 2c:

Maybe from the developer side, it can be seen as something of a luxury - like, how nice that you can afford to spend coding time on projects that make no money. If you live in poverty, your time is better spent on jobs that get you income. I'm guessing they are grateful for FOSS being available, and don't have a negative perception of it, but perhaps there is a lot of talent out there who feels unable to spend time contributing to FOSS.

lake_vincent··on Elon’s back, though he still has a few days to change his mind again
Reasonable? Just like his Ukraine "peace plan" idea, right?

Totally reasonable, and not an unhinged egomaniac with entirely too much money, and not enough humility.

I'm sure it won't go to his head, as evidenced by his many level-headed tweets about covid, immigration, and many other topics. That is because his huge brain enables him to think clearly about anything and everything, so anything he censors will be correct censorship!

If anyone should control a major media platform, it's a stable genius like him...

lake_vincent··on Elon’s back, though he still has a few days to change his mind again
The thought of him presiding over a major media platform throughout the 2024 election cycle makes me want to cry.
lake_vincent··on “Rust is safe” is not some kind of absolute guarantee of code safety
Great explanation. I am not an expert on this, so your comment helped me understand. It sounds like Linus is just being a good kernel maintainer here, and clarifying a misunderstood technical term - safety.

It's not a condemnation of rust, but rather a guidepost that, if followed, will actually benefit rust developers.
