lagniappe··on TUI Studio – visual terminal UI design tool
Comments in this one are embarrassing. Some of you will find a way to complain about anything.
lagniappe··on Building a TB-303 from Scratch
Jeskola Buzz has a pretty interesting back story:

>The development of the core program, buzz.exe, was halted on October 5, 2000, when the developer lost the source code to the program. It was announced in June 2008 that development would begin again, eventually regaining much of the functionality.

One thing I very much appreciate in new-lang posts is seeing a code example above-the-fold, front and center. Kudos to the authors.

lagniappe··on Linux From Scratch ends SysVinit support
Imagine that, people on the internet disagreeing. I've had both sysv and sysd crap in my cheerios. The thing I appreciated about sysv was that it stayed in its lane and didn't want to keep branching out into new parts of the system. Sysvinit never proposed something like homed.

lagniappe··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
I'm the person who commented it and I don't appreciate your straw man here.
lagniappe··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
I want the future to focus more on the brakes and tire dust, and the increase in cancers and other problems by people who live near busy roads or highways experience. Nobody studies this, and combustion or battery, everyone is affected by it. Even playgrounds are filled with shredded tires, which borders on biohazard.

lagniappe··on AI Usage Policy
>people already working on the project would be better at prompting and steering AI outputs.

In an ideal world sure, but I've seen the entire gamut from amateurs making surprising work to experts whose prompt history looks like a comedy of errors and gotchas. There's some "skill" I can't quite put my finger on when it comes to the way you must speak to an LLM vs another dev. There's more monkey-paw involved in the LLM process, in the sense that you get what you want, but do you want what you'll get?

lagniappe··on Ask HN: Is it time for HN to implement a form of captcha?
>the backstory has been that it's someone with a track record under other usernames.

This has gaps, as you know, and doesn't wash. Let someone turn a new leaf. Amnesty puts a stop to this.

lagniappe··on Ask HN: Is it time for HN to implement a form of captcha?
>Almost everyone banned on HN is banned publicly, with a public message explaining why.

I would love for this to be the case, however I quite extensively investigate this phenomenon and this does not match what I've seen. I'd like for us to be better than shadowbans. In some cases, I don't even get to vouch, it's just a comment that is banned-banned. It feels the worst when they're saying something substantive to the conversation and we have no means to surface the comment.

Some type of annual amnesty consideration or something of that nature is in order, or soon we'll recreate other echo chambers that are slowly fading out.
