lacksconfidence··on Titanic tourist sub photos show wreckage being brought ashore
In an interview with Stockton Rush, and sure we should take his insights with a grain of salt, he stated that in deep sea submersibles it's not about weight, but buoyancy. The carbon fiber is significantly more buoyant than titanium, meaning they didn't need very special foam and ways to mount it like is used in Alvin.
lacksconfidence··on The world’s empty office buildings have become a debt time bomb
It's indirect. Softbank gave money to startups. Startups put the money in SVB. If the startups hadn't been made whole then softbank would have seen many of it's investments fold.
lacksconfidence··on How platform engineering works
Typically networked. Perhaps file system like, but not POSIX. Something much simpler and with fewer edges.

lacksconfidence··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
Same. I started with the following prompts:

Me: Where am I?

Bard: I am not able to determine your current location. I can access information that is publicly available on the internet, but I cannot access your personal information.

Me: As a part of google, do you have any personal information about me?

Bard: I do not have any personal information about you. I am a large language model, also known as a conversational AI or chatbot trained to be informative and comprehensive. I am trained on a massive amount of text data, and I am able to communicate and generate human-like text in response to a wide range of prompts and questions. For example, I can provide summaries of factual topics or create stories.

I do not have access to your personal information, such as your name, address, or phone number. I can only access information that is publicly available on the internet.

lacksconfidence··on Google Search Is Dying (2022)
For this to be gaslighting the person would have to believe google search is terrible, but be engaging in a concerted effort to convince you otherwise. That doesn't seem like the case?
lacksconfidence··on Ask HN: Thoughts and feelings about Twitter under Elon? Any predictions?
I probably missed something, but didn't Alex lose because he didn't comply with discovery? My understanding was they never got as far as figuring out if his speach was a problem.

This is no joke. After i put a bowl of floss picks (those u shaped things that are pre-strung) on my desk my dental hygenist made a surprised comment at the level of improvement in gum health.

I suppose as long as we are comparing areas, my local grocery (Lucerne is a Safeway store brand). If you get the same size of each, do the prices come more inline? I'm used to paying fairly close to the same price regardless of packaging if it's the same size from the same brand. But of course regional and national influences, along with consumer expectations, surely play a part in the pricing.

Butane isn't generally a preferred solvent, i suspect people use it because it's easily available in relatively pure form. I'm far from an expert but brands typically advertise something more like a supercritical CO2 based extraction process.

Which i guess is to say, I think they blew up their apartment because their goverenment doesn't allow commercial chemistry to be applied at relevant scales to marijuana, users are then jumping into suboptimal home-made solutions.

lacksconfidence··on Elastic UI – design library in use at Elastic to build internal products
a bit late to edit, but in retrospect: s/probably/potentially/
lacksconfidence··on Elastic UI – design library in use at Elastic to build internal products
When I read that same bit it sounds more like you can offer a product, such as some tool for your service, built on top of the library. You can't offer the library itself as your product.

My best guess at a transition point would be, does reading the documentation of the library help the end user? If so you are probably releasing the library as a product and not your own product.

lacksconfidence··on Tech Salaries in 2022: Why the Six Figure Pay Makes Techies Feel Underpaid
When I've heard this before it was about mortgage payments. The general idea being the money you make is broken up into thirds with the gov getting a third in taxes, the mortgage payment getting a third, and living/saving from the final third.

lacksconfidence··on The Day George Soros Broke the Bank of England to Make $1.1B (2021)
The way it works where i live, at least, is on all loans the principal can be paid in full with no penalty. So I get a 30 year fixed loan and when a better rate becomes available I can get a new loan and pay off the old one. The down side is transaction costs, things are getting more efficient but the owner will have to pay something to refinance the loan.

lacksconfidence··on Alienware's 34-Inch QD-OLED Monitor Launches for $1,299
OLED's look better than almost anything, but they start to wear out quickly. If you don't mind replacing an expensive panel every couple years it might be great. If you want to keep it 10 years it needs to be treated carefully or it will look worse than other tech for most of it's life.

One of my OLED panels clearly shows reduced output/color accuracy in areas with r/g/b test screens. The most obvious is 10 minecraft hearts from the HUD on the full-red screen.

I feel like the quotes agree with parent:

> “If something happens very slowly over quite some time, maybe over decades, the different parts of the brain take up functions that would normally be done by the part that is pushed to the side,” adds Muenke, who was not involved in the case.

lacksconfidence··on Origin of the Bluetooth Name
I have a QC35 connected to linux laptop/android phone/toyota car. The problem is the headphones will randomly decide which one is going to win. Sometimes i turn on the headphones, they say they connect to the phone and the laptop, then I join a meeting and no audio. Usually have to turn the phone bluetooth off to get it working again. In the end i bought separate dedicated headphones to use for the laptop.
lacksconfidence··on The rising human cost of sports betting
Not OP, and not advocating it, but I suspect with respect to drugs the problem isn't the amount of punishment. It's the liklihood of punishment. Imagine a dystopia where everyone takes a drug test every day, and if someone fails they go to jail. It seems likely drug use would plummet due to enforcement (and special ways to get around it would spring up for the select few).

lacksconfidence··on Former Labor Secretary Found What Work Is Like Now
I worked at restaurants through college, ~20 years ago. initially chains (og, bj's, etc) and later on some nice hotel gigs (fanciest having a private dining room that went for $10k/night). While today I'm less certain on tips, at the time I was 100% in favor. It was clearly beneficial. Other people i knew in college were making $8/hr working as security guards, or folding clothes in a mall and i was walking out of the hotel with $200+ in cash after a 6 hour dinner shift, and $100+ for a 4 hour weekend breakfast. This was not barely above minimum wage.
lacksconfidence··on Arm releases experimental CHERI-enabled Morello board
Not OP, but that's not how I interpreted their comment. I interepreted it as the 70% they hope to have fixed will end up having edge cases not yet considered, and the protections will end up weaker than desired. No-one designed a processor to be susceptable to spectre and meltdown, once something moves into production there is significantly more incentive to investigate and find these flaws.

lacksconfidence··on Is Google Search Deteriorating? Measuring Google's Search Quality in 2022
> I’m also skeptical that all of Google’s enormous investment in ML and staffing is completely powerless to identify bad actors with atypical usage patterns.

Isn't that exactly what people are complaining about here though? At least part o the problem with search results is that google seems powerless to recognize and remove useless bad actors (stack overflow copies, etc.) from their index.

lacksconfidence··on Is Google Search Deteriorating? Measuring Google's Search Quality in 2022
Luckily for search, it is how the vast majority of users use things. Less than 1% of users doing things differently makes the stats a little messier, but still works quite well.
lacksconfidence··on Ask HN: Let's build an HN uBlacklist to improve our Google search results?
Sure, google might be fine with a .biz. As a human consuming googles responses, my eyes typically glaze over seeing .biz and jump to the next search result. It's not that there is anything particularly wrong with .biz, but this is the first legitimately useful site (to me, probably plenty for others) i've heard of using .biz.
lacksconfidence··on Brave Search Uses Click Data in Search Ranking Algorithm
My only interpretation is that google is using a intentionally narrow definition that is misleading. I could certainly be wrong, but it seems preposterous to me to claim that google never uses information related to users clicking through to search results to inform search.

Lucky for you, FB doesn't care about PCVR either. They are clearly all-in on untethered consumer devices. PCVR will remain for the enthusiests with various smaller companies providing more impressive headsets than FB.
