kylestlb··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
I'd wager this is the case for most American cities if you are coming here from Seoul

If you live in the Sunset you most likely have a car.

the union is literally called 'the international brotherhood of teamsters'. what else do you expect them to be called?
kylestlb··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
I majored in econ. Friedman is as mainstream as it gets. Not sure why your econ courses ignored the guy. He made quite a few appearances in my 200 and 300 level courses.

kylestlb··on US Attorney Announces $3.36B Cryptocurrency Seizure in Connection with Silk Road
The linked affidavit has more of the interesting details. Looks like the agent worked with the guy's ISP and a well-known crypto exchange to do some old fashioned IP tracing.

kylestlb··on Python Communist Revolution
You are referring to democratic centralism, which is a form of democracy.
kylestlb··on Python Communist Revolution
He did in fact have lots of qualms. The history of the various Communist Internationals are all about left/right wing conflict within the party. Even during the revolution there was constant dissent and debate, which some might regard as healthy - until the right-wing of the party (Stalin & friends) laid waste to democratic processes.

kylestlb··on Show HN: Should I Get a House? a better rent vs. buy calculator
If data exists on historical growth between single-family homes vs townhouse vs condo, it would be quite interesting to show here. Since SFH are not being built in certain metro areas anymore their prices seem to rise dramatically faster than space-efficient property.
kylestlb··on Show HN: Should I Get a House? a better rent vs. buy calculator
This all depends on geography though. Buying in the bay area and only staying for 2.01 years could get you a pretty hefty ROR assuming you don't remodel anything, considering the supply constraints. Maybe covid & remote work will change that.

kylestlb··on Media blackout after key witness against Assange admits lying
According to whom? There is a pretty strict definition of means of production, as it was labeled by Marx & Engels, and 'bureaucracy' as a concept isn't it.

Adding on to this: there is no rough equivalent to Lenin capturing the railroads in the USA, at all. The bourgeoise have controlled the means of production from 1776 til now.

Who owns amazon fulfillment centers? Who owns media companies? Who owns airlines? If it ain't the workers, then nobody has seized the means of production.

kylestlb··on Media blackout after key witness against Assange admits lying
Pretty sure the user is making sock puppet accounts because I also see this link elsewhere on this thread... wish I had the power to report it.
kylestlb··on Media blackout after key witness against Assange admits lying
Seize the means of production...? That has an actual meaning and I don't think that's what you're describing. I assure you that hasn't happened in the US yet. The means of production have generally been controlled by the ruling elite since the founding of the nation.
kylestlb··on Link rot and content drift are endemic to the web
I disagree that the unstated assumption is eternal preservation of all writing. IMO the author is clearly focusing on official or semi-official published information, not necessarily what you and I write on places like HN.
kylestlb··on Link rot and content drift are endemic to the web
It's an Atlantic article so it's long, and several of the comments here show that people aren't actually reading the whole thing... but I did and it's worth the time. It's not only about links being dead, it's about the lack of transparency & audit when content is changed via takedown requests, it's about dead links showing up in decades-old supreme court decisions, it's about private industry's lack of incentive for wanting to improve any of these issues, etc.
kylestlb··on How to Work Hard
Just want to say that I agree with everything you've posted in this thread, and it's always shocking to me that people still believe the prosperity gospel in 2021.

kylestlb··on Facebook senior software engineer interview
Either this or junior/non-senior engineers at FB are already long gone before they have a chance to be promoted to senior because they job hopped somewhere else.
kylestlb··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
Was there a similar flurry of "how to ace the finance interview" in the 80s and 90s when everyone wanted to be a stock broker?
kylestlb··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
"Many of the people who say this kind of stuff never really mastered the theory, and because they never mastered it they can't really use it, and because they can't really use it they find work that doesn't strictly require it, and then conclude it's useless..."

this is quite the assertion. do you have any evidence supporting this statement?

kylestlb··on Ask HN: Am I too late for the “Data Science” wave?
one factor here is that 'senior' doesn't really mean anything anymore other than 3+ years of experience.
