kwere··on Roma families are defying their persecutors with bling palaces
in Italy gypsies are associated with travellers that live in makeshift trailer parks. they dont have access to stable temporary jobs and the stereotype is that they steal to make a living. The sanitary conditions in 80% of the nomads parks i saw (~10) were appalling, expecially for the minors, often visibly dirty and disheveled. Obviously you cant call cps on such cases, its their "culture"
kwere··on The richest people borrow against their stock (2021)
there was a loophole that allowed wealthy people to donate to museums works of arts in exchange of a write off on the value of the artwork. to limit abuses they patched it so that you can writeoff only the purchase price not the market value. I heard a workaround is having living artist create a artwork directly for you and getting it appraised to a crazy amount for writeoffs.
kwere··on TikTok is 'digital nicotine' meant to hook kids, AGs fume in new suits
When a product is engineered to be as addictive as possible to increase sales/usage it should be considered a "drug like" substance and be heavily regulated/monitored for public health reasons.

This treatment should include lots of other products like for example videogames or flavour enhanced junk food

kwere··on Three Mile Island nuclear plant restart in Microsoft AI power deal
the democratic will should be only on state or common goods. On their land persons should be able to do whatever whitlist following safety guidelines. including operating a nuclear facility
kwere··on The crypto bros crowdfunding a new country
The best way to create new countries to try different societal models is by claiming the only unclaimed territories in the world, international waters with floating cities. There are various projects going on [0][1][2]

kwere··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
investing on cutting edge tech has historically been more beneficial to society in large than similar (tiny) amounts in welfare projects. Increasing workers productivity also makes similar levels of taxation less burdensome. lets say you need 10k a year per capita to finance welfare for everyone. if gross income doubles, tax burden halves.
kwere··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
Sure, he has become the richest man of the world with various world class companies by accident. Elon Derangement Syndrome is real

Most economies are not meritocratic and/or capitalist but mixed economies where the state direct good % of gdp towards political goals. in these societies the ones who makes real money are in proximity of the "printing press", usually finance, banking, real estate and generally incumbent megacorps; all actors that can take full advantage of low interest rates & stimulus programs that end up inflating assets (cantillon effect) further devaluing the value of labour. We need real meritocracy and capitalistic competition to put back power int the hand of labour.

But the 50s were a big historical anomaly that should not be taken as benchmark due to a lot of factors, first of all being an overheated economy, the only country with serious industrial capacity post WW2

kwere··on New study simulates gravitational waves from failing warp drive
if its a scientific research why not? Governments should spend the money they squander in vote grabbing welfare instead in Researchs of various kind, even crazy ones for points of GDP
kwere··on 39% of Americans worry they can't pay the bills
it shows that the companies are not competing with each other for talent, one reason is that due to immigration & international learning centers Oxbridge provide a stream of (white collar) skilled workers needing a visa willing to work for lower ball offers
kwere··on Is There a Homeless Crisis?
the future of US is most likely some sort of Brazil with lots of gun violence
kwere··on OECD Teens lack financial literacy and maths skills for digital economy
its mostly due of computer science becoming mainstream and no more niche or for "asocial nerds". Only a selfselected minority 'back then' thinkered their afternoons around computers
kwere··on CrowdStrike offers a $10 apology gift card to say sorry for outage
Crowdstrike (unless it is a front of some sort) has absolutely not resilience as these other businesses, expecially after such blunder for a "security" company
kwere··on CrowdStrike offers a $10 apology gift card to say sorry for outage
more reasonable than such company having 500+ P/E ratio.
kwere··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
Yeah, fast changing demographics means fast changing values.People that come in mass from failing or disfunctional or just very different societies can and do bring with them "incompatible" values. Us modern ability to integrate / assimilate people in mass is probably ovverated, expecially in a fast paced mass migration scenario of a multiethnic society. the future is probably some version of Brazil

Usa got lucky integrating most europeans first and skilled immigrants later. but it struggled with other demographics, notably afro-americans, native americans

kwere··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
>Without immigration, U.S. population growth would be well below replacement rate. This is a growing problem throughout the entire developed world with no fair answers

We are living in a death cult(ure), we arent reproducing maybe for economic conditions as in most developed countries wages have compressed in real terms and people prefer to have less if none kids than to lower their lifestile below what they were born into, maybe is the anti-family culture that permeates society, seiing the nuclear family as a burden to personal fullment, woman independence, career obstacle, problem for the enviroment or the miriad of other factors.

Importing migrants is just a band aid that moves the problems of our unhealthy society few years down the line, we need to focus on our dying societies.

kwere··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
anecdotally, as an Italian i worked summer jobs in the rural side few years ago being paid 4$ an hour off the table, and it was considered a very good pay. I hear all the time of illegal migrants being paid 2/3 $ an hour without any contract
kwere··on Panic at the Job Market
the tech talent is still safe, its "junior" level people that are struggling due to the "downturn" in tech. Probably when big tech fired people, lower level corpos took that talent at a small discount, putting pressure on lower level positions.
kwere··on Panic at the Job Market
with a compounded growth of 3% yearly, USA would be able to double its GDP every 24 years. thats where most people expect the extra revenue to come from, somewhat naively
kwere··on Panic at the Job Market
outsurcing to India or similar cheap places has been the "solution" to most big non-tech firms for decades now, smaller ones hire local or "same continent" contractors (latam or eastern Europe), keeping a small team onsite for operations / reliability
kwere··on Women who make Samsung semiconductors are striking
high tech "machinery" is the constraint for most capital intensive businesses
kwere··on Women who make Samsung semiconductors are striking
yeah, to bargain one needs strenght, on such scenario, UBI would mostly like benevolence of the powerful to stabilize their power structures. The masses will comply with UBI or not
kwere··on Effective CSAM filters are impossible because what CSAM is depends on context
the only way to catch pedos, if anybody really cared, would be with honeypots and "trojanlike" content, which could infect csam collectors devices and transmit data to police. It also work as a scaring tactic, so to limit diffusion of such material
kwere··on The Software Crisis
accounting, expecially tax optimization is really interesting/fun, but maybe its just in my bubble in a high tax country where most of the middle class needs tax optmization to live above the poverty line
kwere··on Peak Population Projections
People are angry that their economic systems arent compatible with having families either with current salaries or time committment careers require. Most people (women in primis) find themselves sacrificing basic quality of life to have 1 or 2 children. Government solution to such societal issues is to import workers in mass ("they will pay social security contributions for the elderly") which suppress wages down further increasing the cost-oppurtunity of having children. Replacement theories fit nicely, at least on an economic point of view. Businesses interests get cheap workers on one hand and childless consumers with more disposable income on the other hand. Entire societies dying is just an aftereffect

Short-termism of our leaders will lead to a systemic collapse just like in the Soviet Union.

kwere··on How innovative is China in nuclear power?
fortunately grandma is politically irrelevant in china (ayi's are worse than Mao), though the age of its leadership is showing, as they are still obsessed in trying "socialism" and see skyscrapers as the ultimate hallmark of development (they built so many cathedrals in the sky the government had to put moratoriums on financial requirements to build them)
kwere··on Gen Z Plumbers and Construction Workers Are Making BlueCollar Cool
A lot of trades not only require hands on experience as apprenticeships, but also buttloads of certifications / legal liabilities to sign off projects, which act as a sensible moat agianst unskilled migrant laborers that dont know the language well, let alone able to navigate endless bureacracy.

Also in a lot of trades once you have a "name" and book of clients its easy to work on your own and start a small business

kwere··on EU: Users who refuse scanning to be prevented from sharing photos and links
The EU is a socialist project since its inception, a third way between the excesses of capitalism and comunism
kwere··on EU: Users who refuse scanning to be prevented from sharing photos and links
Colonialism except for few colonies here and there was a big source of cost for european Nations. Buying raw goods from cashstrapped Kleptocracies is a lot more efficient / cheaper
