kwakubiney··on Googler... ex-Googler
Sorry to hear. I have never worked for Google or any corporation of that scale but I got my fair share of a harsh layoff two years ago (at a reasonably small company). The company used to run a hybrid shift, with specific days for remote and onsite. We got a mail (from the higher ups) a day before saying no employee should show up at the office the next day, under the guise of a fumigation exercise. The next day shows up, I am in a meeting with my colleagues (a regular standup), a fraction of my teammates receive an email with an meeting invite link. We join the meeting, our mics and cameras were automatically turned off by the host/organizer, the CEO's face spotlit in the meeting, he then delivered the news in a very cold way, the meeting ended, we were logged out of all company accounts in the next 15 minutes, that was the last team meeting we had :)
kwakubiney··on Strengths Are Your Weaknesses
Yeah pretty fair to say. The company is in a domain where accuracy is very important and crucial because we deal with people’s money, but most products are also in a market where competition is high so moves must be made quickly.I have not been there for long but it seems in the beginning, the foundation laid because of fast shipping culture has caused all these problems.
kwakubiney··on Strengths Are Your Weaknesses
I think this goes in line with companies as a whole as well. I work at a place where features are pushed at a very very high speed and we have realized that the tradeoff is us missing pretty crucial edge cases in our development. Now i’m not sure if people have worked in a place where they shipped products fast but were able to minimize bugs but i’d love to hear how your company achieved that. Is it even possible? Does it all come down to hiring to suit your fast paced needs?

kwakubiney··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
Another issue I have is with the Messages app. My girl sometimes sends me voice messages from her iPad, and sometimes the voice messages come as .caf files. These files are pretty much unplayable from the iPhone in the Messages app. It happens intermittently because we send a lot of voice messages between each other. I use an iPhone 15, not sure what her iPad model is. It also happens sometimes when I record voice messages on my Mac (Sequoia 15.3.1) and it shows up as .caf files on her iPhone and it renders it unplayable. I then have to record the message with my phone before she can play it. There was another case that happened (haven't been able to reproduce it yet), but I sent a voicenote with my Mac via Messages and we literally could not open the conversation again. It became so laggy typing a message in the conversation (even after waiting for a lot of time for the conversation to open). The way I resolved it is by deleting the conversation, that fixed it. But obviously I recovered the conversation, and the issue still persisted. I updated my iPhone to 18.3.1 and that was how the issue got resolved.

Same. When I boot my computer and reach the password prompt, whatever character I type first inputs two dots, I have to clear those two dots first and type the password again. It is very annoying.

I am a versatile software engineer with a passion for building scalable and innovative systems. My commitment to the open source community is reflected in my contributions to projects like Go, Cilium, and Kubernetes, alongside personal projects including a Tinder clone API, a VPN solution using UDP tunneling, and a firewall application leveraging eBPF. I thrive in remote environments and am excited to bring my expertise and leadership skills to new challenges.

kwakubiney··on Show HN: SafeHaven – A Minimal VPN Implementation in Go
Agreed. I will be working on eliminating that limitation soon. For now, I have removed that part from the blog post to reflect the current situation a bit more clearly.
kwakubiney··on Show HN: SafeHaven – A Minimal VPN Implementation in Go
Ah nvm, I see how it reduces the complexity now. I would not have to create routes for the halved address spaces anymore
kwakubiney··on Show HN: SafeHaven – A Minimal VPN Implementation in Go
Thanks for the comment. Cool stuff you lot are doing on Hyprspace! I agree the usage of `exec.Command` is a bit gnarly, using the netlink library would make it a bit more cleaner. The suggestion to define a metric lower than that of the existing default route makes sense. But then that would mean I then find out what the default route's metric is by making an extra call where my current implementation does not use that extra call but the outcome is the same? To reduce cognitive complexity, I can understand how your suggestion helps though :), unless there's another thing I am missing?
kwakubiney··on Show HN: SafeHaven – A Minimal VPN Implementation in Go
Thanks for the comment and nice words! The encryption bit is still something I am yet to get into since I have not decided on how to go about that yet! It seems Tailscale uses the WireGuard protocol, I could probably look into how they are doing that and get some ideas from there :)
kwakubiney··on Show HN: SafeHaven – A Minimal VPN Implementation in Go
Hey! Thanks for the comment. There was not any particular one resource I used to direct this implementation, I used a couple. Most prominent was reading open source code on GitHub[1] by people who have done similar things. Understanding how TUN/TAP devices work was crucial and this book[2] helped a lot.

kwakubiney··on Starlink is now cheaper than leading internet provider in some African countries
A bit skeptical about the article because in Ghana, Starlink is mostly used by the elites. Majority of people stick to mobile data or the local ISPs because it is known to be cheaper. Also, I wonder which fixed ISP the writers speak of (with respect to Ghana) because those price ranges seem a bit too extreme to be that popular in Ghana. And also, way more expensive than what the local ISPs provide.

Edit: It seems I might be wrong and the perceived high cost comes from the actual starlink device and not the internet plan. The article just compares the internet plan prices. The cost of the device and the restrictions on usage (can’t use in different locations etc) serves a deterrent to the average Ghanaian anyway.

kwakubiney··on Engineers do not get to make startup mistakes when they build ledgers
At $currentJob, we have decided to stick with Fineract for ledger maintenance and that helped us scale without having to deal with the nitty gritty details of accounting. If you don’t have the necessary expertise around you, offload that responsibility to a third party system that is maintained by those who do.

Really cool tool. Starred
kwakubiney··on I kind of like rebasing
This is exactly what I do at work everytime. The only issue with this sometimes for me is when i rebase interactively and i have my commit message with all squashed commits. So I do a `git commit —-amend` on the squashed commit and tidy up the mess in the message.
