I’ll work very hard and on the cheap if you can actually prove your company gives a shit about QA.

kulahan··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
I think it has become common, but I never heard it until a few years ago. Now it's seemingly everywhere. When I was a kid, it was just "Here kitty kitty" or making a clicking noise with your tongue or something.
kulahan··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
The wiki article on it says it was known to locals. I think the problem is that they kept describing tilcayo, and everyone who wasn't there but was listening said "Oh that sounds exactly like an oncilla. must be a second name or something."
kulahan··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Yeah, but that’s probably easier to solve than eventually losing the whole dang structure!
kulahan··on Small programming tricks
I’ve read that if you’re trying to overturn a habit with a new habit, it’s best to undo whatever it is you did the old way, then redo it the new way.

So if you want to use ctrl-r, but you’re using the up key, use the down key to navigate back to a clear line, then use ctrl-r. Do it enough times and your brain will work overtime to find a shortcut (aka just doing it the new way).

kulahan··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
I’m certain engineers have considered this, but it doesn’t seem answered anywhere: why not just pump the original brine back in to move around the oil? Wouldn’t that at least prevent eroding the storage unit and causing it to fail?

Unrelated: dang, he wasn’t underselling this being a pretty elegant solution! I never would’ve thought of it, for sure.

kulahan··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
I’ll never understand people so desperate to find villains in the world.
kulahan··on Room 641A
Well yeah, it’s not a faultless thing. If you’re being reckless and insane they obviously fire you, but literally nobody does that. It’s not an easy job to get, you’d be throwing away a great career. Closest you’ll come is someone getting fired for drinking and piloting.
kulahan··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
Yeah, I’ve been saying hot minutes for decades myself!
kulahan··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
Well no, you can only be 100% certain you're reading the text found in that book. Books often change over releases. It's not some sacred tome containing an ever-updating reflection of the author's ideals. It's just the draft at the time the book was printed.
kulahan··on Room 641A
Have you tried just not looking at it from a 9 mile high horse?
kulahan··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Ah shit, that one word does change the whole meaning of the sentence. Well, at least we brought attention to it over the course of four comments instead of this just being the first response lol
kulahan··on Why is privacy so hard?
If there isn’t a very strong incentive to share, nobody will. If there is, people will just share it as much as possible to get money, consequences be damned.
kulahan··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
“AdSense has got to go” should include OP’s use if they truly believe that. That’s what the person you’re responding to is saying.
kulahan··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
You’re going to steal in response to stealing…?

Unless you’re of the opinion that since it’s data, it’s not stealing?

kulahan··on Room 641A
Yes, I know. 99.9% of those shootings are kids who have zero emotional self-control, zero outlets, zero friends, and access to a gun. It's not a terrorist. There is a dictionary definition of a terrorist. I don't know how much more literal I need to get in order for you to understand you've got zero education to pass on here.
kulahan··on Will There Be a 7G?
Does this affect signal strength? I'm just annoyed I can't get more than two bars at home, or talk on the phone and take a shit at the same time.
kulahan··on Room 641A
You didn't specify those - you specified "shootings". It's not my fault you're unable to actually make your point known.
kulahan··on Will there be a 7G?
I’m not in the industry, so I can’t speak intelligently on this, but as a user, literally the only change I’ve actually noticed in my day-to-day is that when they removed 3G, I lost a shitload of connectivity. I live probably half a mile from the capital building in a greater metro region of over a million people and I still get shit connection at home on TMo. Maybe physics is the problem, but why waste time making things insanely fast in a lab setting? Work on making it fucking usable in the real world, like in a neighborhood with trees.

I do not give a shit if I can download at 500mbps while resting my phone on a wireless router. I need to be able to USE it.

kulahan··on Room 641A
Is this a serious question?

Because it was a terrorist group killing people to make a point, not somebody who has lost their sanity and, failing to have any other outlets, takes it out on the weak.

How are people THIS dense?

kulahan··on Room 641A
Accidents. The aviation industry is the worst example you could use. Every single time, the goal is to find the issue, NOT the blame. The industry is insanely safe in large part BECAUSE they refuse to frame it as a crash, and instead frame it like an accident.
kulahan··on Room 641A
Oh, you think I was being literal
kulahan··on Room 641A
You think they were doing it on purpose every time someone is in an accident, or you think every time someone says "accident", they're referring to or you're purposely missing the nuance to make a point nobody agrees with, or you think that people in general are not annoyed when someone drives recklessly?

If it's the first, I dunno - you're wrong. People aren't. If it's the second, aside from insurance fraud, nobody is trying to fuck up their day and lose a functional car in the process, maybe getting seriously injured. If it's the third, you're just being annoying and nobody will take your point seriously if you can't make it more saliently. If it's the last, go check out reddit. There are at least half a dozen subs where people post bad drivers and everyone in the comments is collectively grumbling.

kulahan··on Room 641A
Maybe if you have zero understanding of things like emotion and humanity, and also cannot tell the difference between an accident and a mass murder.

Otherwise, this is surface-level insanity.

kulahan··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone Are Changing the Name of South Park to South America
The premise of every single one of them is wrong because you’re depressed and projecting. You’re just so dedicated to searching for evil that you’ve completely confused “look at this goofy person” for “FUCK THIS SELF-RIGHTEOUS PRICK”.
kulahan··on Coyote v. Acme (1990)
Him responding to why he's freeballing it in the new movie is another gem. Very cute thread.
kulahan··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone Are Changing the Name of South Park to South America
Thank you for posting exactly the hilariously wrong interpretations I'm actively speaking about.
kulahan··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone Are Changing the Name of South Park to South America
Antisemitism and satire - famously the same thing and this is definitely not an insane comparison.
kulahan··on Kimi K3 (2.8T) at 1 token/s on a MacBook Pro, streamed from four SSDs
I was mostly curious about the source and figured that would bring it out. Sorry.
kulahan··on The Microeconomics of Artificial Intelligence (2025)
It wouldn't require perfect accuracy, just rough accuracy and a human to confirm, and it's already more than good enough for that. I do not understand this confusion surrounding modern math.
kulahan··on Kimi K3 (2.8T) at 1 token/s on a MacBook Pro, streamed from four SSDs
Gates never said that, for what it's worth.
