kukx··on If ICANN only charges 18¢ per domain name, why am I paying $10? (2014)
I can only think of one theory that could defend the US gov decision. Perhaps they didn't want to directly charge for the com domain to make it appear more open and "commercial" to foreign actors (states, companies).
kukx··on If ICANN only charges 18¢ per domain name, why am I paying $10? (2014)
Ignoring the fact that the revenue goes to a private company there's one good reason why 18¢ would be a bad idea - already too many domains are hoarded by a small group just for resell; I imagine it would be even worse then.
kukx··on The Intel ME subsystem can take over your machine, can't be audited
I like her summary of Intel ME:

"We have seen that Intel ME is potentially a very worrisome technology. We cannot know what’s really executing inside this co-processor, which is always on, and which has full access to our host system’s memory. Neither can we disable it.

If you think that this sounds like a bad joke, or a scene inspired by George Orwell’s work, dear reader, you might not be alone in your thinking..."

kukx··on Russia Is Reportedly Set to Release Clinton's Intercepted Emails
It feels like a red herring to me. It may not be, but still, after the recent massacre the sentiment supports Trump. Hillary probably wants to change the subject - it may prove difficult.
kukx··on Being sued, in East Texas, for using the Google Play Store [video]
What about making an "anti patent troll" website that will allow users to share their legal approaches and documents and the rest of the defense materials. Some of them may be reusable. I guess it should significantly limit the legal costs for everyone and improve their position against trolls, right?
kukx··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
I think it's a bit naive approach. The food is cheap because of the highly efficent agriculture. If you are going to grow stuff yourself your output per square meter is probably going to be much lower and it's going to take a lot of time and energy than if you were to rely on the economy. It's simply not feasible for masses to go back, without changing their diet, ie having to eat less with smaller variety of food. And if you take into account the impact on the country's economy due to this shift, it would be disastrous and put your country behind every other country in the world. It would also mean that you were going to be exposed militarily because of the inferior war technology caused by the inefficient economy. And so on.
kukx··on I worked on Facebook's Trending team
>"Every day, I sifted through hundreds of topics (or “keywords”) that Facebook told me were trending on the platform. Then I’d choose a story about the keyword(...)"

>“Facebook relies heavily on just 10 news sources to determine whether a trending news story has editorial authority.”

>"Several times curators were penalized for using Twitter in descriptions."

It seems that Facebook is likely to manipulate the news by selecting the "right" sources. If there's bias it most likely come from the selection, I wonder what are the source titles. Also, penalizing for mentioning Twitter shows that they put their own intrest over their users. It is understandable to some degree from the economic point of view, but it also shows the danger of having one company dominating the market. Facebook is not that benign, even now.

kukx··on Content is dead
Let's be honest, why they shouldn't block adblock? The ads bring them money. And they need money to survive and, if they lucky, develop. The writers have families or plan to have ones, they need to be rewarded for their work. It may be their main or only source of income. Now, if they also provide a valuable information for you, I think that trying to trick them into giving it for free (ad free) is wrong. I think and it may controversial here, but every valuable site that lives on ads should block adblock. And don't get me wrong, I actually use adblock myself, but I'm more than happy to add exceptions for the sites I need or value.
kukx··on GitLab Pages
I'm sad to see that. The subject was arguably right on topic. I get the feeling that it was taken down only because it was inconvenient for someone.
kukx··on Silicon Valley is broken and heading for social unrest
Now let's imagine what will happen when driverless cars start to take away millions of jobs. It may not be that easy for a truck driver to find a new work.
kukx··on Silicon Valley is broken and heading for social unrest
It may work until there comes a competitor like Amazon that operates on near 0 margins and kills the business. Still it's a nice vision.
kukx··on Chart Shows Who Marries CEOs, Doctors, Chefs and Janitors
How to interpret this kind of entry (pair-count.csv):

1,1010,,,1.53E+07

where sex_sp and occ_sp is omitted. Also, how to interpret the first entry in the job-name.csv:

none,none,0,none

I'm currently inclined to simply ignore these in my analysis.

kukx··on We are slashing the C1 price by 70 percent
Some things don't happen for only one reason. This is a business so obviously it is profit oriented, but it doesn't rule out that the company wants to actually do something good for the society.
kukx··on The Disappearance of the World’s Greatest Free Diver
"So for me, the living, it makes a huge difference (...)" that's the whole point. This is all for you to feel better about someone dying. I don't like it, because it's so selfish; someone dies and you sugar coat it with bs.
kukx··on The Disappearance of the World’s Greatest Free Diver
If you die you die. What difference does it make if a second ago you enjoyed your life. If anything it makes it even worse. Dying when you enjoy the life the most? I can understand that someone wants to die when he suffers terribly, but not this.
kukx··on The Disappearance of the World’s Greatest Free Diver
"I like to believe she died doing something she loved doing", like it makes any difference for her.
kukx··on Intel and Micron Produce Breakthrough Memory Technology (x1000 Speed)
They explicitly said that it CAN be used both as a storage and a system memory. Indeed it is slower than DRAM, but the difference is relatively small, DRAM is not even twice as fast, according to the provided data DRAM is only 1.5 times faster.
kukx··on Intel and Micron Produce Breakthrough Memory Technology (x1000 Speed)
It's facinating. This technology can replace DRAM and it means that we could switch from GBs of RAM to TBs in one huge step.
kukx··on The Myth of the Psychopath
Here's an interesting talk from a psychopath https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzqn6Z_Iss0 He made previously an other confession, which was less funny and much darker. Unfortunately it's gone now. I guess, he had a second thought, and asked to remove it. As far, as I remember he mentioned, for example, that if someone did something bad to him, he could not forget it and he would get even in some way, no matter if years had to pass. Also, another interesting talk related to the subject https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bysVPcKQfeY

kukx··on Firefox Bug 111373 - don't allow animated site icons
I wouldn't blame the Firefox team for not fixing it. It's not that they were doing nothing in the meantime. They actually have their hands full with more meaningful changes. When the web stops developing then they will probably have more time on doing this kind of fixes/changes.
