ktzar··on How Anthropic teams use Claude Code
They're subsidizing a world where we need ai instead of understanding or, at the very least, knowing who can help us. Eventually for us to be so dumb we are the ai slaves.
ktzar··on I watched Gemini CLI hallucinate and delete my files
This reinforces my narrative of AI being a terrible thing for humanity. It's not only making us forget how to do the most basic things, but it's making people with not a clue about what they're doing think they are capable of anything...
ktzar··on Experimenting with no-build Web Applications
I've interviewed "Front end Devs" who don't know the difference between a class and an id. We're becoming dinosaurs
ktzar··on Cloudlflare builds OAuth with Claude and publishes all the prompts
If we shiver at the sight of some of those accounting-created excels, which we only learn about when they fail and they can't understand them anymore, wait for them to hand over a vibe-coded 200k loc Python codebase "which is not working anymore" and nobody had ever reviewed a single line of code.
ktzar··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
funnily something similar exists in the UK since the post-WWII postcode change. Addresses can be "minimised" to 10 characters, or less. Obviously there's no way to change the real destination once something has been sent

https://vlad.website/most-minimal-uk-address/

ktzar··on The Generative AI Con
It's helped me incredibly to proof-read a novel I wrote in Spanish and translated myself into English to make it sound more native. I review ever single suggestion an LLM provides (as I would do with a native proof-reader!).

I think this type of job suits LLMs perfectly... At the end of the day it's just a statistical NLP tool.

ktzar··on OpenAI O3-Mini
I don’t think they’ve improved much for common use since GPT-3.5, to be frank. They’re cheaper and more ubiquitous, yes, but when it comes to summarizing and generating basic text, they’re pretty much the same as they were back then

Maybe we're just getting more used to make it part of our workflow.

ktzar··on I've Acquired a New Superpower
I used to use that trick with some arcade game that was popular in bars in 00s Spain. People were just impressed!
ktzar··on A new Llama-based model for efficient large-scale voice generation
just found the same, has it been removed?
ktzar··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
I think you have touch on an interesting point here... When working remotely you really need to put an effort into keeping a healthy social life balance, otherwise you end up feeling exactly as you describe. It's easy for days to go on with no "change of landscape", and that can send anyone straight to depression.
ktzar··on Belenios: Verifiable online voting system
a common problem of all systems that include a way for voters to verify their vote is that it opens the possibility of parties buying votes, as you can prove your voted for them.
ktzar··on Converting Codebases with LLMs
I wonder how many subtle errors will make their way to the new codebase (decimal rounding, a library uses where a parameter is ignores and there's no tests for it...) only to be found in production and AI will be blamed.
ktzar··on Panic at the Job Market

ktzar··on Panic at the Job Market
I have been trying to hire someone with more than a couple years experience in frontend and event sourcing with any language in the backend for weeks and 90% of the applicants are just people right off a bootcamp where they just do Django. then a couple no-shows and people who essentially add any tech they've heard of in their CV.

In the past I've interviewed dozens of people who mention five DBMS in their resume but can't say when they'd use one over the other.

there might be less low hanging jobs, but finding competent devs beyond mid-level is getting harder and harder. it seems they stop job hopping.

ktzar··on Tillywork: Open-Source Work Management
Plane looks much better, despite being a ripoff of Linear

ktzar··on Paul Auster has died
I can thank him for having taught me his language, the intricacies of baseball, for having shown me corners in the state of New York unheard of outside the States. For having explained what love and passion are and aren't, for having instilled dreams and hopes. And most importantly, that life can be lived to its fullest at any age.

A life worth living. Rest in peace, he will continue living while he's read.

ktzar··on Paul Auster has died
Which happens in one of his novels
ktzar··on Meta Llama 3
even if they released them, wouldn't it be prohibitively expensive to reproduce the weights?
ktzar··on California exceeds 100% of energy demand with renewables over a record 30 days
Nuclear doesn't scale quickly. It already adapts from 4GW to 7GW in Spain, but it does it slowly and ahead of weather conditions. What is needed is more co-located battery storage, and more gravity (solid or water) storage.
ktzar··on California exceeds 100% of energy demand with renewables over a record 30 days
it's easier to move power than water :-) So as long as it's rained a lot somewhere, that can be used as a battery. Most hydro power plants are not in Catalonia or Andalusia (https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1jVN1LmOoTTqg3e...)
ktzar··on California exceeds 100% of energy demand with renewables over a record 30 days
Spain as a whole 45 million country with diverse geography and scattered population is producing 75 percent of its electricity from renewables and gas and carbon have been down to almost technical zero.

It's rained a lot over the last month's and water reservoirs are used as battery.

I made a website to track this: https://energy.antizone.online

During the day, a huge chunk of the produced energy is sold to other countries, that's why I claim that 70% of its electricity is from renewables, even though the production share only accounts for 66%.

ktzar··on German state moving 30k PCs to LibreOffice
Interestingly, it might not be a cost saving decision, but the money needed for the initial setup and ongoing support ending in local companies' and worker's pockets.
ktzar··on Show HN: I made a free animator. Think Adobe Illustrator but for animation
There's a correlation between the death of Flash and the rise of mobile devices browsing. Flash was pixel-based and the whole paradigm doesn't really work for responsiveness.
ktzar··on How QUIC is displacing TCP for speed
I came to mention the same. Diagrams have redundant information, examples are badly picked, there's sentences with little to no value... I don't know if it's lack of care, the author not writing in his native language, or excess of GPT.

> QUIC works on top of UDP. It overcomes the limitations of TCP by using UDP. It’s just a layer or wrapper on top of UDP.

Makes me want to stop reading.

ktzar··on Pandoc
This is what I used to typeset my novel. My editor and publisher tried multiple methods and they kept being impressed by how clean and "just right" the versions I sent them were... In the end, we ended up using the PDFs generated by Pandoc instead of InDesign or whatever proprietary stuff they used.
ktzar··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas, everyone!!!
ktzar··on Large amounts of carbon capture as a solution is an 'illusion'
Plant trees. Chop trees. Build stuff. Bury wood. Repeat.

Note: it doesn't mean keep burning gas at the same time.

ktzar··on Researchers analysed novels to reveal six story types
Vladimir Propp already analysed the basic structural elements of Russian folk tales, down to 31 elements, and drafter how these units formed classic Russian tales.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Propp There's been further efforts to analyse his work https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12559-015-9338-8

ktzar··on A group of open source Android apps without ads and unnecessary permissions
Pushing to buy premium version, so without ads is misleading.
ktzar··on Far Manager: files and archives in Windows
How's this better than Midnight Commander? I saw a colleague using Far and we found that, as far as our usage went, both had a similar set of functionality.
