> men in their 40s who worked in the dioxin plant looked like they were in their 80s. Many hard-working people died young there

There are still pockets of this. In the big US Navy shipyards, the exotic metals welders are not known for living very long.

These are government measures to encourage rice production, not discourage it.

kryogen1c··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
> this sort of tone, with the absolutism, the attempt to reduce the complexity and nuance of reporting to the point where it can be dismissed is pretty typical of what passes for commentary in today's blog/tweet/commentary culture but it really plays more into the hands of those that would sow confusion

I think this is the mechanism of action that will lead to america's downfall.

algorithmic content has connected dopaminergic interest to extremism while simultaneously welcoming influence from both agents of neutral chaos and malicious destruction.

i am currently watching a schism unfold in my immediate family over the death of charlie kirk. if we literally cannot discern the difference between charlie and a fascist/nazi/racist because complexity and nuance are dimensions of information that do not exist, then we are destined for civil war.

you cannot understand vaccine safety, israel v palestine, russia v ukraine, or literally anything else by scrolling instagram reels. stop having an opinion and uninstall the poison.

kryogen1c··on The Asus gaming laptop ACPI firmware bug
The technical RCA is fascinating, but im also interested in the business processes RCA.

- this sounds ubiquitous and reproducible. How did this not get fed back through tech support/RMA channels? Was there so little evidence that it wasn't correlateable, or did ASUS look and arrive at an incorrect conclusion, eg batch of bad silicon? Could it be that they had plentiful evidence and were negligent or incompetent?

- it sounds like this is plainly evident when using the machine. What is the QA process? This should not have been possible to miss?

- now that they know, what will they do?

Imo, the ceo calculus here is clear. If you're a luxury good with elastic demand, you fix the issue and fix the perception (two separate things). Multi-year, multifaceted issues like this have the potential to ruin a brand. I've bought ROG in the past, and I'm inclined to never do so again.

EDIT: on further reflection, the firmware bug itself is pretty troubling. the other bugs i get - hardware assumptions were changed, or good code was reused that didnt know or support the gpu mux, i see how those errors comes about. the method sleeping an interrupt... is awful? how did that get reviewed? what is that firmware test suite?

kryogen1c··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
Those are all great questions, and why the point under discussion is whether or not we should choose our words more carefully and stop making apocalyptic predictions.
kryogen1c··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
> My conclusion is that you don't mind making apocalyptic statements about actions you think are dangerous to society, which sits uncomfortably with your asking other people not to.

This is a nonsense argument. It is possible that constantly making apocalyptic statements can result in an apocalypse, and saying that people should stop doing that is not contradictory.

The words you use matter. If trump is an existential threat to democracy, he should be assassinated. If you're not advocating for murderous escalation, then stop using those words (for example).

kryogen1c··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
> What kind of gun could that have been?

There are many different kinds of ammunition design. Some pierce and punch holes, some fragment and tumble, some balloon and expand, some cause large tears and cavities.

Ballistic science is actually a fairly complicated rabbit hole

kryogen1c··on Sig Sauer citing national security to keep documents from public
> But firing when you pull the trigger is not an issue.

This is not a fair and accurate phrasing of the problem. Triggers have a breakpoint in the pull at which you expect them to fire. Discharging by touching the slide, even while the trigger is depressed, is not expected or acceptable.

kryogen1c··on Sig Sauer citing national security to keep documents from public
> The video is misleading because he is partially pulling the trigger, which deactivates the internal safety mechanisms.

While true that it is misleading, i still think it's fundamentally correct. You do not expect your firearm to discharge if someone bumps you while the trigger has the slack taken out.

kryogen1c··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
Boy if you think non-constitutional executive orders are new or a trump thing, you're in for quite a surprise.
kryogen1c··on Valve Software handbook for new employees [pdf] (2012)
>Valve is flat. It’s our shorthand way of saying that we don’t have any management

> Team leads Often, someone will emerge as the “lead” for a project. This person’s role is not a traditional managerial one. Most often, they’re primarily a clearinghouse of information. They’re keeping the whole project in their head at once so that people can use them as a resource to check decisions against. The leads serve the team, while acting like as centers for the teams

I appreciate the out-of-the-box-thinking+creativity foundation theyre trying to lay here, but... this is what management is. I understand management has other emergent properties and misaligned incentives, but those are literally the core (technical) value-adds of managers.

> Rural Americans > high school dropouts

Lol HN you really are too much sometimes.

Covid went really well in all the intellectual bastions of liberal democracy right? NYC, SF? California famously no downsides from their policy choices at all.

And then to top it off, you compare response to China - the government that lied through it's teeth about covid from the beginning, jailed journalists and destroyed evidence.

Unreal

kryogen1c··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
> Any company that can take advantage of workers will do it, no need for "dominant/ monopolistic".

What a nonsense thing to say. This is not an opinion most people, and certainly not most economists, would agree with. It's a foundational pillar of regulated free markets.

Moreover in this instance, construction companies are not some sprawling international megacorps, they're locally oowned and operated.

kryogen1c··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
>> people are bad at their jobs so I fire them

> need for unions

What in the world? This is the exact opposite use case for unions.

Unions help protect workers from single, dominant/ monopolistic employers where workers have no other options and can get taken advantage of. The construction industry is nearly the polar opposite, where there is almost no barrier for entry and the employment space is very competitive, including the ability to start your own business.

Construction unions would be an absolute nightmare.

kryogen1c··on Underwater turbine spinning for 6 years off Scotland's coast is a breakthrough
> Do you have this same concern about literally every structure man has ever constructed?

To a lesser extent, yes. However, power generating facilities are different in that they are intended to remove as much energy as possible, whereas sky scrapers etc are not.

kryogen1c··on Underwater turbine spinning for 6 years off Scotland's coast is a breakthrough
During transfer, the source experiences removal.

Covering the ground in non transparent panels removes heat from the ground.

kryogen1c··on Underwater turbine spinning for 6 years off Scotland's coast is a breakthrough
I have always had this concern about wind and solar. Removing energy from one part of the earth always sounded very haphazard and untestable.

It's very unclear to me that removing heat from the ground, reducing wind speed/pressure, and lowering tidal forces is guaranteed to never have catastrophic impact.

kryogen1c··on America’s incarceration rate is in decline

Your points say old people have more lead, but then you say young people are more violent. That doesn't square with the articles point that incarceration rates are falling.

kryogen1c··on Guess I'm a Rationalist Now
> The people involved all seem very... Full of themselves ?

Yes, rationalism is not a substitute for humility or fallibility. However, rationalism is an important counterpoint to humanity, which is orthogonal to rationalism. But really, being rational is only binary - you cant be anything other than rational or irrational. You're either doing what's best or you're not. That's just a hard pill for most people to swallow.

To use the popular metaphor, people are drowning all over the world and we're all choosing not to save them because we don't want to ruin our shoes. Look in the mirror and try and comprehend how selfish we are.

Is English not your first language? That isn't double think.

If a law is passed requiring drug use to be prosecuted and making it illegal not to, you have criminalized decriminalization.

Just because words or concepts are opposed in isolation doesn't mean they can't appear in a sentence or thought together. That's not how grammar works, and it's not what 1984 is about.
