krisrm··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving Everyone
You are not alone in this... The first time I heard "smee", I thought my ears had gone.
krisrm··on Introduction to Cloud Firestore for SQL Developers (Part 2)
I haven't read much about Cloud Firestore before. My experience with NoSQL is limited to older (Lotus Notes/Domino). How does this compare to something like MongoDB.
krisrm··on Transformers from Scratch
I remember designing plenty of "BazAdapterFactoryManager" software in my early days of software engineering.

Sometimes I still have to maintain that software, and I remember quickly what regret feels like.

krisrm··on Underrated Reasons to Be Thankful
Realized after reading this that it's American Thanksgiving today. Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends. I'm thankful for a lovely forum where we can read and share articles like this one.
krisrm··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
"every economist worth their weight in salt"

Which ones might those be? I think the public's trust in economists has been rightly damaged for a long time.

krisrm··on Named Pipes in .NET 6 with Tray Icon and Service
Apologies - my comment was poorly worded and I think it caused confusion. The article sort of implied that Visual Studio was "The Way to Develop in .NET", while both you and I obviously know that's not true.

I've seen a lot of documentation (third party and Microsoft) that just start in on a "Visual Studio"-based solution while ignoring everything else, which kind of rubs me the wrong way.

krisrm··on Is Crypto Bullshit?
Is the truth really always somewhere in the middle? It was certainly true that tulips weren't actually worth as much as houses, in the end. Why can't the same be true of cryptocurrencies?
krisrm··on Is Crypto Bullshit?
"One of my personal epistemic precepts is that if I disagree with somebody who is (a) at least smart as I am, (b) has generally sound judgment and (c) is better informed on a subject, then I ought to concede that I’m probably wrong and revise my opinion in their direction. "

I appreciate this point of view. I think it's also worth noting that your smart, of-sound-judgement friends have their own personal epistemic biases. Some of which can be for or against crypto currencies.

I've personally decided it's not something I value, despite knowing many smart people that invest or are involved in crypto. If I am leaving a bunch of money on the table, at least I know why.

krisrm··on Things I learned from building a production database
Very good list.

[22] Avoid using real-time for correctness guarantees or comparing clocks across machines unless you have (and understand) error bounds on the clock.

I shudder to think of the hours spent head-scratching that went into this Lesson Learned :)

krisrm··on Named Pipes in .NET 6 with Tray Icon and Service
Just to clarify something at the start of the article... If you are using full Visual Studio to develop with .NET 6, you will need 2022. If not, (eg. VS Code), will work with the command line sdk.
krisrm··on Fingerprints can be hacked
This doesn't make sense to me. In what use-cases do we use our personal computers authenticated but also unauthorized?
krisrm··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
This makes me sad.

As someone who's used Rust but isn't fully familiar with the community, what would the expected roles of these moderators have been? Is it just forum moderation or are there other components?

krisrm··on Crypto Wash Trading
I'm no fan of crypto currencies (as my comment history will show), but does "different" imply "fraudulent" necessarily? or are there other factors at play? eg. easier APIs, more variance in crypto prices so that an automated trading strategy becomes potentially more lucrative?
krisrm··on Learn RegEx step by step, from zero to advanced
Regular expressions are one of the first things I remember being taught in my intro CS class that really broadened my perspective on programming. Probably helped that the main language being taught was Perl, and my previous programming experience was BASIC ... Expectations might have been set low. One of those tools that's often over-applied, but invaluable in so many other situations.
krisrm··on List of 8000 security vulnerabilities in 1200 Wi-Fi routers
> Being able to use Arch Linux or Debian, and the latest mainline kernel and have replaceable storage is just so much more flexible in what you can do.

Why not use dedicated router/firewall software like pfsense, OPNSense, or Untangle (all BSD-based, Untangle is a paid product though)?

I bought a little NUC with an Intel CPU and NICs to run pfSense a few months ago and it's been fantastically stable.

krisrm··on Decentralized Woo Hoo
Mirrors my feelings on the crypto-craze. As "decentralized" as some may want crypto currency to be, there are some inherently "central" activities (exchanges being one of them) that tend to be skirted around by proponents.

Also, Decentralized Woo Hoo sounds like a great band name. Or something naughty from The Sims.

krisrm··on Divorce does funny things
Agreed. It certainly doesn't demonstrate honesty or integrity, qualities which I value. While I'm sure plenty of adulterous people have made fine business partners... I'll take mine without, thanks.
krisrm··on Websites should not use dithered images
Interactions like this are why I spend my "social media" time on hacker news. Good on you for building the tool in the first place, and for being willing to admit a mistake.
krisrm··on U.S. sets goal to drive down cost of removing CO2 from atmosphere
I do worry about the oversight and auditing of such metrics. The article does refer to the problem of "I planted X trees therefore I removed Y carbon", when that is true only under particular conditions.
krisrm··on Monte Carlo Methods or Why It's a Bad Idea to Go to the Casino
The related article on blackjack (linked at the bottom) was also a great read. I've never felt like I really understood card counting but it makes a lot more sense now. Also explains why I don't go to the casino :)
krisrm··on Open-source automated insulin delivery system given approval by team of experts
It doesn't look like hackers are necessarily the intended audience, but it would have been interesting to read about some of the failsafes preventing this system from causing overdoses or other dangerous conditions.
krisrm··on Ways to improve mental health for software developers
Strong agree on this. Whenever I find my shoulders getting tight with stress, a walk outside might not fix everything, but it sure makes a difference.
krisrm··on The Costs of Requiring Accounts
I'm not certain if you're being tongue-in-cheek or not, but I would think that often this would be positive net-value to content quality. If it takes a troll or a bot to stimulate quality discussion... so be it, I suppose.
krisrm··on Ask HN: Book to Study about DNS?
If you're looking for DNSSEC specifically... I have not read this one, but enjoyed another in the "series" by the same author (TLS Mastery).

DNSSEC Mastery

krisrm··on Apple backs off of breaking Face ID after DIY iPhone 13 screen replacements
The article doesn't detail why the microcontroller transfer is necessary (unless I missed it). Does the phone do some sort of hardware verification to confirm the existence of the original camera for FaceID?
krisrm··on PHP Is Killing Python
I guess I don't even think of these two languages as direct competitors. PHP is highly geared towards web scripting, Python is highly geared towards... well, just about every sort of scripting, and a lot of other stuff too. I don't think PHP has nearly the versatility of Python.
krisrm··on DoorDash to Buy Finland Food-Delivery Startup in Deal Valued Above $8B
Is there an end-game for the food delivery industry that doesn't involve investors, restaurants, and customers being fleeced? From what I can tell, consolidation and monopoly-seeking is the name of the game in a business where there's not enough margin to go around...
krisrm··on Jony Ive’s first major design since leaving Apple
In your opinion, what would be an example of a "beautiful skeuomorphic gradient"?

I don't use Apple software (or hardware) much, but I recall a certain stitched-leather user interface for iCal that really put me off skeuomorphism in User Interfaces.

krisrm··on Dropbox Sync does not natively support Apple Silicon
Agreed, I hadn't seen anything on this subject before and wasn't aware it was a copypasta response. I get that hn doesn't want to turn into the cesspool of inside jokes that reddit has become, but a quick jab like this here and there never hurts, imo
krisrm··on Software developers have stopped caring about reliability
While I agree with much of this, it also reeks of confirmation bias. It's very difficult to notice when software is reliable, but poor reliability can often (but not always) be quite apparent.
