krilly··on Tesla Cybertruck
Anyone else think this looks awful? Especially compared to BMWs i series, which is unashamedly futuristic but also, well, nice
krilly··on Sketchviz – Graphviz graphs in a hand-drawn style
Matplotlib has XKCDify which is similar[0]. It's great for rough or estimated graphs that are not to be read accurately.

krilly··on My name causes an issue with any booking
So do you dutifully put your real first name into all forms? I know people who always go by shortened versions of their name (e.g. Rob instead of Robert). They just put in their preferred name as their first name for everything (uni, bills, etc.)

You can't blame companies for using the name they give you. Are you worried about being accused of fraud or something?

krilly··on Indiana Bell moved a functioning building in 1930
I am reminded of that Thunderbirds episode where they attempt to relocate the Empire State Building, with predictably disastrous consequences. [1]

It's interesting how in many ways, the future the show predicted was more negative than the present. It seems the hubris of man has calmed down a bit since then. Or is that the spirit of adventure? One of the two.

krilly··on YouTube autoplay gave a lost Japanese classic new life (2017)
Ryo Fukui has been very popular for a long time with the /mu/ sort of crowd. There's a group of artists (ryo fukui, animal collective, neutral milk hotel, the antlers, mount eerie, destroyer, the avalanches, gsybe, etc) which are basically a clique in the music recommendations graph. Although they aren't very close to each other genre wise, they are safe bets as a recommendation for anyone who listens to any music in the /mu/core 'genre'.
krilly··on Microsoft Access: The Database Software That Won't Die
Open/LibreOffice Base does have backends for MySQL and PostgreSQL already
krilly··on Secretive military spaceplane lands in Florida after record-long orbital flight
I know that amateur astronomers have tracked the position and trajectory of X-37B so surely countries with advanced space programs (Russia, China) would be able to do this with ease? I think a rendezvous with a known satellite would be detectable.
krilly··on Assange in Court
I know of Craig Murray through local politics. He is a conspiracy theorist and a mentalist. Can't believe I'm seeing his blog on HN
krilly··on A Nun’s 450-Year-Old ‘Last Supper’ Makes Its Museum Debut in Florence
I love that little logo at the end of every atlas obscura article. Great branding.
krilly··on The World's First 20-Hour Airline Flight
I think you replied to the wrong parent? Can't see anyone talking about class action lawsuits.

Anyway, considering the stringency of aviation regulations designed to mitigate already very small risks, I think it would be consistent to force passengers to get up and have a walk once in a while (if this would indeed mitigate the risk of DVT). Obviously airlines would never take this step, but they could at least recommend it, or the FAA could enforce it.

krilly··on Fortnite has been down for hours as millions of players stare at a black hole
Narrative framing of planned downtime! Genius. I wonder if it's been done before? I guess it only works with something as hyped as Fortnite
krilly··on Apple's list of 235 apps that are incompatible with macOS Catalina
The reason you can't downvote yet is because downvoting stunts conversation and doesn't let anyone else know why the comment is bad, while not giving the parent an opportunity to defend their position because they don't know what the issue is.

But you've persevered and managed to achieve this anyway. Nice one.

krilly··on US workers may have to change social media use as firms adapt to China's rules
Well, no. All this recent controversy stems from the recent NBA incident.
krilly··on A fake town on Reddit where everybody knows your name
It went trending a few times (so it appeared at the top of every users' screen). Going trending is often a death knoll for a subreddit but especially one like this, where the whole premise is a delicately constructed inside joke. Reddit is particularly sensitive to this due to its upvote system.

Back in my chan days we were very sensitive about maintaining the exclusivity of our boards. This is the purpose of rule 1 (do not talk about /b/) and refrains like 'lurk moar'. Posters that did not understand the boardculture were shouted out, and memes and lingo were made deliberately abrasive to deter newbies and tourists. Of course, this only lasted so long.

krilly··on 'We good now China?' South Park creators issue mock apology
It's a streisand effect thing. Pooh was banned for one stupid meme, which made him a symbol of the ludicrousness of Chinese censorship and oppression. So yeah, it's a real thing in China
krilly··on Millions of Android Phones Are Vulnerable to Israeli Surveillance Dealer Attack
Can anyone explain why the private sector in Israel comes up with so many zero-days?
krilly··on Learning Haskell is no harder than learning any other programming language
I'd say rally driving is the best analogy. Not only do you have to drive the car at peak performance, you also have to perform ad hoc repairs halfway through a stage
krilly··on No evidence that testosterone reduces cognitive empathy
I should have made clearer that this view is now dated.
krilly··on Show HN: Ieddit – A minimalist, Reddit-like site with anonymous posts/comments
The alt-right, despite all its flaws, so make very good open source forum software
krilly··on Starship Update
Wow, sick web design and a sick idea. It's like Augur without the bullshit
krilly··on Microsoft has removed the “use offline account” option when installing Windows
So people can either care about privacy as much as you do, or not at all? There is an in between you know
krilly··on An erroneous paper on religion and generosity is retracted
Wait a second. If the issue with the analysis is as the article says, that is that some countries were weighted far higher, that means that in some countries the original conclusion does hold (probably for a small sample size). Perhaps this is because some religions promote generosity and some do not? Would be interesting to look in to.
krilly··on Stallman Still Heading the GNU Project
The problem is that the evidence of individual women is fallible, and can be brushed off. The comments he made in the mailing list are in the public record and are therefore undeniable evidence, which serves to reinforce previous claims of abuse.

It may be a straw, but it's a very heavy straw, placed at just the right location

krilly··on The one who kept VLC free
I use mpc-be because it's prettier, or mpv on linux. Although vlc is brilliant, it's sometimes like chopping a twig with a chainsaw
krilly··on Minimum unit pricing may have helped reduce alcohol-related deaths in Glasgow
That's been the experience among my circle of friends (cash strapped students). Why spend a fortune on beer when you can get a strong pill for a fiver?
krilly··on Wintergatan's Marble Machine in Minecraft [video]
In my opinion Kria's best work is on Pullhair Rubeye, the album she did together with Dave. Unfortunately they chose to release the album completely reversed, so you'll have to find a fixed version on YouTube.
krilly··on How a deadly fall revealed CIA secrets
To my knowledge Ted Kaczynskis experiences with MKultra didn't involve any substances. He just sat in a chair while some folks screamed at him trying to aggressively undermine all of his views.
krilly··on Show HN: Simple tool to make a habit of exercising
There's a great open source android app[0] which has most of the functionality here in a really polished package.

krilly··on Tired of Stack Overflow
I agree that when I search for a question online I very often find a SO question with my exact problem. But it seems like almost EVERY SINGLE TIME, the question has been locked for being unconstructive, off-topic, (wrongly) a duplicate, whatever. Despite having hundreds of upvotes and tens of thousands of views.

So this page is at the top of the google search results for the query and it can never be updated with new info or given a better answer. I don't know anything about how the SO community works, but I suspect they resent the site's status as a kind of reference to be accessed through search engine results, and would rather all it's users to be active members of the community.

I also think (and have seen) that the community dislikes questions that are answered in documentation or elsewhere on the internet. I often see comments on questions I arrive at through google saying 'just google it, here's the first google result it answers your question'. The source given is always inferior, and the SO question, with a much clearer and more concise format, has become the first google result. This seems like a good thing to me, but look, the question's locked. What exactly is the problem with SO being a more comprehensive knowledge store?

krilly··on Tell HN: Thank you for not redesigning Hacker News
Another awesome thing about simple sites like this is you can hack the CSS really easily with something like Stylus.
